Popular opinion stacked against MW bid to receive AQ status
Bumped to front page.
In an article by Andrea Adelson, it seems as though the argument against the MW receiving an AQ bid is like Sisyphus trying to push a boulder up a hill. Each time he gets close Sisyphus, or Craig Thompson, has it come back down on him, through defections of top named teams. Because all of the teams that have made the MW name grow over the past decade are slated to be gone by 2013, the argument is, that AQ cannot be offered to a conference with only eight members, and weak links at that.
What the article doesn't point out, or any of the bloggers at the end either, is that the AQ status for the MW, if granted, would only be in place for one year without the benefit of BSU and SDSU. In 2012, both will still be members in the MW. We will have to wait and see of there are any more defections from the Big East in the coming year, which would leave SMU, Houston, BSU, SDSU and UCF in an awkward position:

Not really
left in an awkward position if more teams defect from the Big East, because other than a slight possibility of Louisville or Cincy going to the Big 12 the rest of the teams aren’t really wanted by the other big conferences and the Louisville and Cincy defections are kind of tenuous at best given the whole mess that WVU is embroiled with the Big East.
Either way
As both schools have stated, they can still probably get better media exposure/revenue from a severely weakened Big East than the mess that the MWC has.
