Boise State opened its 2011 basketball season at Taco Bell Arena last night with a 93-47 victory in an exhibition match over Division II UC-Colorado Springs. All 11 players on the Broncos squad saw action as head coach Leon Rice prepared his young team for the upcoming season opener against Colorado Christian Friday night. For many of the Bronco players last nights action was their college debut. Highly touted freshman forward Anthony Drmic put up 16 points and two other players scored 15 points each: freshman guard Derrick Marks and sophomore forward Ryan Watkins. Five different players finished the evening in double digits. Drmic also pulled down seven rebounds and had three steals while working both ends of the court. College of Southern Idaho transfer Kenny Buckner led the Boise State team with eight rebounds. Boise State dominated the Colorado Springs Mountain Lions finishing with 21 offensive rebounds and scoring 21 second-chance points. All told, the Broncos shot 51.5 percent in a night that suffered from a lack of scoring 3-pointers beyond the arc. But the Broncos didn't need to. They forced 28 turnovers and had 18 steals, limiting Colorado Springs to 18 field goal attempts in the first half. The Broncos season opener comes Friday against Colorado Christian at Taco Bell Arena. Tip-off will be at 7:30 PM MTN and is part of a doubleheader with the women’s team, which hosts Southern Oregon at 5:30 PM.
