The Air Force Falcons still need to defeat the Colorado St. Rams on Saturday to become bowl eligible, but if they win they should not expect to be heading back to the Independence Bowl for a second consecutive year. Bowl officials have come out and said that they do not want Air Force two years in a row.
This somewhat hurts Air Forces chances of making a bowl game all together, but in reality they will end up somewhere and it will likely be a game that does not have a Mountain West tie-in. The Las Vegas and Poinsettia Bowls are likely to take either the TCU Horned Frogs or Boise St. Broncos and if a Mountain West bowl game is to select Air Force it would be the New Mexico Bowl since they have the fourth pick. However, Air Force lost to both the Wyoming Cowboys and San Diego St. Aztecs it is likely that Air Force would be going up against San Diego State for the last spot. The edge is likely to be given to San Diego State due to their win over Air Force.
Several bowl projections from the past week have Air Force slotted to be in the Military Bowl where they would face an ACC team likely the North Carolina Tar Heels or the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The way Air Force could be heading to a Mountain West bowl game is if Boise State or TCU make it to a BCS bowl game. Both are still alive for that as are 28 other teams, so if Boise or TCU make a BCS bowl game that could put Air Force in position for the New Mexico Bowl. However, the Military Bowl could be a better matchup than playing a WAC school.
