Will Pat Hill get the boot?
Bumped to the front page.
I've been a bit of a lurker here. This is the only place I could find to talk about this, so here we go.
Fresno State is 3-5. The optimism they began the year with due to former standout David Carr's younger brother Derek Carr beginning his career there has now faded. Derek himself has done well for a sophomore, with 1980 passing yards and 15 TD passes in 8 games for a rating of 135.4. However, there is a growing sense that Fresno State is, if not going backwards, then stuck in the same place, having watched Boise State pass it by after that fateful 2001 game. Hill has only had 2 losing seasons in his time there.
I have heard that Hill refuses to recruit from nearby JC's that produce great players, preferring to grab high school players. One example of this is Hawaii's QB Bryant Moniz, who was a Fresno City player.
With Fresno State's move to the Mountain West/C-USA product coming next year, the schedule will only get tougher.
Personally, I'm on the fence. The Bulldogs' athletic program is strapped for cash, and buying off Hill won't help. However, with all the talent they have, there is really no excuse for some of the poor outings they've had this season, most notably Ole Miss and almost losing at home to FCS North Dakota. As head coach, most of the blame goes to Hill.
EDIT:Fresno State is laying an egg against Louisiana Tech at home. Ouch. The calls for Hill's head will only increase.
What are your thoughts?

Pat Hill
Coach Hill is untouchable here at Fresno State. Students may not like his coaching style (too dependent on the run), but everyone seems to love the guy due to his personality. Having attended Fresno State for the past 5 years, and having attended high school here in Fresno, it seems that people directly associated with the school adore him, while those that always call for his dismissal are simply fans from Fresno and are in no way associated with the school.

His teams cannot finish games.
Example: Nebraska and Ole Miss.
Last year, we were up 21-3 or something like that on Northern Illinois. Final score was 26-22.
30-3 on New Mexico State. Final score: 33-30.
Be careful and/or grateful Bulldogs
This story line sounds similar to the Rocky Long’s at New Mexico. Although Rocky wasn’t fired, I believe what contributed to him leaving was the added pressure from alumni and administration to take a solid program to the next level. Now New Mexico football has become a tragic comedy in Rocky’s absence.
I couldn’t agree more. As much as I would love to see a more offensive driven coach, I don’t think there is a better option. Pat Hill wants to be here, and we’re happy to have him.

It had nothing to do with the team or program.
An outside guy sold all of it, and the players weren’t the only ones.
still under investigation as far as I know
and it likely won’t have too much of an affect on the football program, since the NCAA can’t touch it since the players were not being given benefits solely based on their membership with the football team, it was a large number of people that happen to include some of the football players. Perhaps there will be legal implications however, or team suspensions.
I haven’t heard any anything about it since the story originally broke. Neither The Collegian (Fresno State’s student newspaper) or The Fresno Bee have brought it up again.

I can understand why some Fresno fans are upset
but I’m not sure I see how this would solve much. He’s an established coach with a pretty good track record, so one down season doesn’t make me think he should be canned. As he said in response to the radio caller, just a year ago they were able to beat both Cincinnati and Illinois. I give him a few more years at least to let him take the team into the MWC and see where you’re at then.
We've been stuck at the same place.
It’s always just barely coming up short. I didn’t expect to win against Cal. It was Carr’s first start. Nor Nebraska. But when they came in and outplayed them for almost three quarters only to fall apart and lose….
That hurts.
I know the feeling
Nevada should have beaten Texas Tech, yet they choked it away. I’m still pretty mad about it.
In one of my Fresno posts I mentioned Hill being on the hot seat in response to the fan that called him on the radio show and I said something similar to what I said above being careful to mention that I know next to nothing about Hill’s strengths and weaknesses. I certainly wouldn’t let him go mid-season, but I can’t really comment on whether its time for a change in the offseason. Mainly I’m just not sure where you’re going to find someone better that fits in the schools budget, successors for coaching jobs at universities on our level usually need to be homegrown or found in the I-AA ranks, and I guess making a change for the sake of a change isn’t always the best move.
you also have to consider the recruiting angle
Again I don’t know how Hill does as a recruiter, but if he’s a recognized coach around your area that might help some recruits want to play there more.
I forgot that you mentioned the JC thing above
That is a bit odd, Nevada I know has found a number of gems out of the JC ranks.
Yeah, that's my biggest beef with him, though there are others.
Carr has amazing potential. I dunno about #1 pick (I dunno if his brother deserved it to be honest, though he was an amazing QB and would be a star now if he had landed anywhere but Houston)
The secondary has no discipline, especially his son. And our receivers would be a perfect fit for Carr (They’re fast as hell and he has a hell of an arm) if they could catch consistently. Against Ole Miss alone I saw:
1. a 50-yard pass hit the receiver in the numbers and turn into a pick because the guy couldn’t catch it.
2. At least 2 sure 50+ yard TD’s.
And they have at least one sure TD bomb pass delivered perfectly and dropped a game.
It’s not a matter of talent, though what we have isn’t due to Hill (Kind dropped in his lap), it’s a matter of coaching.
And here we are in a season where we should be 5-3 or 6-2 (And ranked; beating Ole Miss and Nebraska would do that)
Concluding my rant, we really should have beaten Nevada too. You put the ball on the ground in the late 4th quarter and there was a guy that just sat and watched it roll by before one of your guys jumped on it. And our D could have stopped you on the last possession but made no extra effort at all.
There was a lot that went into the Nevada game, I'm not sure I'd say either team "should" have won
It was certainly winnable for Fresno though no question. I think I remember the guy you’re talking about where he just missed the chance to fall on a fumble looking like he had no idea the ball was on the ground right next to him.
Just because I love playing devil’s advocate: Would Carr even be there had Hill been let go before now? That’s kind of along the lines I mean above. I see your points though, and its interesting for me to hear some of the fans criticisms of Hill since I’ve taken an interest in the team this year. I have various criticisms of Ault as well, but overall I think the positives outweigh the negatives. I do think the right replacement could take the program to that next level, probably similar to how you’re thinking. Problem is, those guys aren’t easy to find.
Yeah, Carr would be there because his brother wants him to beat Boise
Carr the Elder hung a Boise State flag on Carr the younger’s dorm room wall and told him it wouldn’t come down unless he beat Boise.
Pat Hill gets recruits, but the team is undersized as a whole.
size is a tough thing to come by for the mid-major teams though
I remember reading about the boise flag, wonder if he’ll get another chance past next year
I definitely think Pat Hill needs to get fired.
Especially after laying an egg against Louisiana Tech on Saturday to move to 3-6 on the season. Fresno State had their best shot in years to win the WAC this season and they have been pretty much terrible. At least in years past Hill was churning out 8 wins or so. This is just pathetic at this point.

La Tech is great this year, and other equivocation...
La Tech is playing lights out this year, so I wouldn’t put that in the list of “games Pat Hill should have won.” His team does have a serious problem with finishing games…and I think that comes down more to depth and size and the fact that they aren’t a great come from behind offense anyway. Its tough – my opinion of FS was that they performed above what you might expect for years, and now reality has set in. Its a low point, but hang in there Bulldogs.
Get rid of him
And send him to CSU! We would rather have Pat Hill than Fairchild any day of the week and twice on Sunday!
