If College Football Had A Playoff: No. 10 Boise State At No. 2 Oregon

Photo

This is a huge matchup because Boise State has won the last two times these schools met, and last year Boise was able to stifle the fast past Duck offense. Both the Oregon offense and the Boise defense are better this season which would make this matchup very appealing.

What If Sports predicts a close win by Oregon 32-27.  This would be such a good game to watch and in the box all the key players did well. LaMichael James had 159 yards, Boise State's Jeremy Avery rushed for 105 and both quarterbacks threw for over 200 yards and two scores.

Now, it is time for the viewers to vote in this matchup to see who advances. Each matchup will be posted at 10 a.m. mountain time and lasts for 24 hours, so spread the word and vote. Also, discuss how this matchup may turn out if actually played.

this will be a wipeout in the poll for boise state. i casted the first vote for boise state.

unless word gets back to atq. could be close then. i know one thing. boise state would have giving stanford a much tougher test than va. tech did.

On february 5th 2011 at UFC 126 Jon "Bones" Jones will show the world that their was no need for the MMA community to hype this man because this guy is a beast with many skills and i personally will feel Ryan "Darth" Bader's pain after this fight. SB Nation's public enemy #1.

Oregon had 2 chances to prove they could beat Boise and didnt........

I have a hard time believing they would beat them the third time either.

Wow, you Donkey fans just don't quit do you?

Did BSU play against LaMichael James? Cliff Harris? John Boyett? What happened when Darron Thomas cam in the game at Autzen? The truth is BSU did win twice, against different teams. This does not mean you get to exercise the “we beat you” argument in perpetuity. Indiana beat us in 2005, they are therefore a better team, oh and don’t forget about the time Wake Forest beat us in the Seattle bowl. The truth is you don’t know.

Are you new to college football?

The historical “we beat you” argument is used every single day in college football. Hell, it is used to determine rankings in polls.

Every year we hear how {enter non-AQ team name here} should not be ahead of {enter SEC team name here} because {enter same SEC team name here} has won {enter applicable number here} national championships.

Don’t try to deny it, because the Ducks have had to deal with the same thing. It was one of the reasons Auburn was able to leapfrog Oregon the polls this year (that and SOS).

Honey, Masoli and an out-of-shape LeGarrette Blount<<<<<<<<<<<Darron Thomas and LaMichael James

You should remember what happened when Thomas played against your VAUNTED defense.

Honey,

BSU’s 2010 defense is miles ahead of 2008’s and 2009’s.

Get a clue. A game between these 2 teams THIS YEAR would be one for the ages.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

REALLY???

They never have to play past the mid-3rd, and the one game they do? Fall flat on their face. That’s a good d? Oregon is a better offense than Nevada. It might be a close game at the half, but Oregon would pull away in the 3rd quarter.

Go Nevada Wolf Pack!

by BacksThePack on Jan 4, 2011 10:07 PM PST up reply actions

I realize I'm making excuses but...

the temperature at the game in Rheno was in the teens. Our recievers dropped almost every ball thrown to them because they couldn’t feel their fingers. We literally lost our passing game and in an offense as balanced as ours, it really hurt us. Nevada’s run heavy pistol offense was virtually unaffected by the cold. I know it’s nitpicky but if that game was ten degrees warmer BSU would have had the game won by the end of the 3rd. We still almost won. What does that say about our team this year?

by daddy18 on Jan 4, 2011 10:34 PM PST up reply actions

Because it never gets cold in Boise

Nobody wants to hear about how cold it was, Nevada had to play in it too. The truth is two good teams met and the home team won despite being clearly the lesser team. Try again. This is why college football is the best game, because crazy things happen all the time.

Cue the next excuse

by QuackinAK on Jan 5, 2011 9:07 AM PST up reply actions

I was there

and it was cold. I don’t think the Broncos were dressed for it, but that is no excuse. But I have to say, Nevada outscored us 24-7 in the second half and it should not have come down to Brotzman choking up. They won fair and square.

You can bet it won’t happen again this year, because the Broncos didn’t like the taste of defeat. I pity the Wolfpack.

If UNR had regulation goalposts instead of the jokes they have now...

Boise State would have won that game. So let’s not start running our mouths.

Don't even get me started on how much of a joke it is...

that the NCAA can’t enforce one standard goalpost size. Then again, we’re talking about a body that only punishes schools years after the cheating and leaves the postseason of their biggest sport to a completely different organization, so I’m not surprised.

"..Remember what happened when Thomas played against your VAUNTED defense..."

Now who is playing the historical card? I remember two things: BSU 37, ORE 32 and ORE 8, BSU 19. Who cares that a 4th string QB came in and started racking up yards against a prevent defense and 2nd/3rd string defense after the score was 24-7. The same result would’ve happened if he was starting QB, because the game plan would have been adjusted to Thomas.

by TDown on Jan 4, 2011 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

It wasn't a prevent defense.

That is one of the biggest myths surrounding that game.

Donkey fans?!

So why are you braying, hmmm?

Anywho, you do bring up an excellent point. The fact is that I don’t think “strength of schedule”—that magical excuse to discriminate against the Little Sisters (LS) conferences—should rely on stats from more than about four or five years ago. As you pointed out, BSU won “against different teams”. BSU was different. TCU was different. Oregon was different. And so on. Folks shouldn’t be relying on the glories of the teams that played—and won—decades ago. Oregon today is not the Oregon that first joined the PAC-10, and the Oregon of 20 years from now will be worlds different from the team that’s going to the National Championship Bowl next Monday.

But we DID beat you guys in ’09, so there! :}

Good luck against Auburn.

My heart says BSU

but my mind says, maybe Oregon. Depends on which defense shows up and if they can go the distance with Oregon’s fast strike offense. And our offense would have to stay on top of their A game and not lay down like they did at Nevada.

BTY, did anyone besides me notice that at the Nevada game, the Wolfpack was dressed in thermals or insulated undercloths and the Broncos looked to be standing around freezing in thin underwear?

by bluesyourdaddy on Jan 4, 2011 12:28 PM PST reply actions

Oooo, the Wolf Pack FINALLY thinks they have something to talk about...

What do you mean Boise can’t go a full 4 Q’s??? It took OT for Nevada to pull out a win. AND that was with our headcase kicker handing you the game. Now if you would’ve actually won in 4 Q’s, then your comment would make sense. Let’s see what your consectutive season record is.

BTW, I really am rooting for you to beat BC and want you to do well, but this comment didn’t even make senses in the context of the win you did have over Boise.

by TDown on Jan 4, 2011 3:53 PM PST up reply actions

I'm saying what i saw on the field...

… everyone would agree Oregon has a better offense than Nevada, and what i saw on the field for the second half was a gassed broncos defense that would get picked apart by Oregon’s blur offense not allowing Boise to rotate their defense.

Go Nevada Wolf Pack!

is going down. Oregon is rolling this year.

Explain how oregon will stop newton?

right now the sec is 3-4 in bowl games. kentucky and lsu still have to play before auburn. i think one of those teams loses. that would mean the sec would be 4-5 in bowl games. just like ohio state did last night for the big ten auburn would do the same for the sec. it would be a phychological advantage for them and extra motivation to beat oregon.

Headcase kicker?

You mean the guy who just set the NCAA record for points scored by a kicker? THAT headcase kicker?

So what do you make of the Rose Bowl? It’s nine minutes, nine seconds in the second quarter. Welch lines up a 39-yard field goal attempt for Wisconsin. Bang! The ball sails way-y-y off to the left.

Now, then, Wisconsin lost by two points, instead of winning by one. Lessee now, according to my casio, two points plus one point equals three points. Which just happens to be the same number of points a team earns for a completed field goal. In other words, Welch just happened to cost Wisconsin the win.

Hey, I’ve got an idea! Let’s call every kicker who “loses” a game, a “Headcase”. Waddaya say? Great idea, huh?

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

by akviste2005 on Jan 4, 2011 10:02 PM PST up reply actions

Do you argue with your husband like that?

Ask a question and answer it too?

I meant what I said. I know he has the points record; that doesn’t mean jack. Any kicker on a team that allows them to score 6-7 points extra points per game for 4 straight years will get there just as easily (especially when 2 of those years include a 13th game due to having Hawaii on the schedule) . As much as I think Brotz is/was our best option, he psychs himself out when he is in pressure situations.

It’s not just me that thinks that. Watch his ESPN interview. He knows. He admits it. He came up there to kick the OT FG and couldn’t get the first one out of his head. He should have called time out and told Coach Pete that he wasn’t the best person for the job. I repeat – he knew it and he admits it.

Sure he can make a 50 yarder when we’re ahead by 3 or more touchdowns (ala Fresno State) but if the game is on the line and we need the 3-pts, he chokes (ala 2007 loses to WA and HI, 2008 Poinsettia Bowl, and 2010 Nevada twice).

We can call every kicker that loses a game a headcase when they have a history of missing at every (EVERY) opportunity they have with the game on the line AND they fully admit it on national television.

BTW, Brotz never won the Groza Award in his entire 4 year career (award given to the best kicker in college football).

by TDown on Jan 5, 2011 7:46 PM PST up reply actions

Geez

He’s just a man and it’s just a game. You talk like Kyle owes you something personally. He did what he thought he had to do. He was wrong. Kellen was wrong when he threw that interception against Utah, but we won that game because the defense stepped up so his mistake doesn’t count now? Let it go. If everybody who makes a mistake is a “headcase” then we are all screwed.
