TCU in the lead for blue-chip defensive end
TCU was believed to be a longshot to land 4-star defensive end Greg Townsend Jr. out of Beverly Hills, CA. Most disregarding TCU being on his interest list as a sort of a courtesy to his father who played at TCU in the 80's. However in an interview with Scout.com today Townsend Jr. indicated that the Frogs currently have a slight lead on the competition.
“TCU has a soft lead on all of the other schools,” Greg Townsend said. “My brother and I have been talking about going to school to play football together some day and going here would be a great opportunity to do that. Plus my dad went there and played football there, and I like how they’ve had a great program for the past decade. I could definitely see myself going there and making an impact..."
Townsend currently has offers to Alabama, Cal, Miami, Nebraska, Oregon, UCLA, and USC. Rivals.com ranks the 6'4" 242 lb Townsend as the #41 player in the nation, #4 player in California, and #2 strongside defensive end in the nation.
His father Greg Townsend Sr. played for TCU in the early 80's, and was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 1983, he is currently 16th on the NFL's all-time sack list with 109.
Suffice to say Townsend would be a huge get for Gary Patterson's staff, so keep your fingers crossed Frog fans.

Hm
Never underestimate the alma mater effect. If I have a son, I’m sure I’ll be giving him 18 years of propaganda about South Carolina rugby.
Never played
but my brother in law played at Utah, and it is fun to watch.

I played in Highschool
I talked to the coach at Utah and was going to walk on. But I was working and going to school etc so I was really too busy. Add to that that there’s no hope of eventually earning a scholership in rugby since college rugby is a club sport :(
I practiced a couple of times with the team but eventually decided against playing. Too bad cause rugby is REALLY fun*.
As long as runninging for 3 hours a day, getting pummled by guys bigger than you, and having no one watch your games is your idea of fun.
You'd be surprised
Even though it’s only ‘club,’ a lot of schools now offer scholarships for it, and even more have wink-and-nod agreements with the academic scholarship offices to help ruggers get academic scholarships as well and/or also.
But yeah… the crowd thing can be a buzzkill if you’re used to playing in front of throngs of fans. In college, the best crowd we ever got was about 3,000 for our match against Clemson (our rival) – most games hovered around 200 people. In Colorado, our stadium seats 5,000 and we’ll pack it out sometimes, but we usually draw around 2,000 people.

BYU-Utah
Regularly draws a good crowd. Last year I think it drew nearly 5,000 and they played at Rio Tinto Stadium (home of Real Salt Lake).

Yeah
The National Collegiate Sevens Championship, which was kind of crap.
I was happy to see it on TV, but NBC fucked it up by picking schools with ‘commercial appeal.’ The lack of schools like Arkansas State or Life University was really a downer for a lot of rugby fans (and the inclusion of crappy teams like Michigan).
On the upside, it got a good enough rating that they’re doing it again next year (hopefully this time with a better selection process), and the NBC Universal networks are going to be carrying the 2011 Rugby World Cup on American airwaves.

However
Props to Utah for winning it, and beating Cal in the process. Cal Rugby is a beast that is rarely tamed.

The popularity has definately picked up the last 10 years or so. As a side note, I once watched BYU’s rugby team LOSE to the Highland High School ‘A’ rugby team (Highland has something like 14 national highschool championships and a movie about thier team called Forever Strong). My highschool’s team, Orem, which they eventually dropped, couldn’t beat their ‘C’ team. But I hear that my coach who went to coach at Timpview has had a lot of success there and has built a respectable program.
Oh well, I played in the first years at my highschool.
Highland
is sick nasty. Them and Jesuit of Sacramento pretty much rule the U19 universe.
