Mountain West Connection Pick 'Em Contest: Week 2 (New players welcome!)
This post has been promoted to the front page from the fanshot section.
Hey y'all - Week 1 of the contest was fun, and this post will have the Week 1 standings, picks, and some rule clarifications.
A.) Instead of saying "Picks will be due every week by the kickoff of the first game played," the rule will be changed to "No pick will be counted after kickoff of a given game." This allows someone to make picks early Saturday morning, for example, and only cost themselves the weekday games and maybe 1 or 2 early morning games. Since all posts are time-stamped, this should be fine.
B.) We'll look at the regular season / playoff picture more when more players join. As of right now, there are only 4 players, so at this rate we'll just keep with a single season mode.
C.) Participant norcaliangelsfan accidentally bolded over 4 games while making his/her picks last week, so I can't give him credit for those. It's suggest that, when making one's picks, you only write the name of the team you think will win (or say Colorado d. Colorado State). Bolding, italicizing, etc. could easily lead to typos, which I hate to see happen.
D.) We'll continue to monitor how to handle Week 1 as the season progresses. If nobody else joins, obviously we'll count it. If not, it'll likely be a bonus round.
E.) As of right now, players are entitled to drop their worst week of play in determining the final standings. This may bump out to worst two weeks as the season progresses, depending on how we handle Week 1.
F.) Standings will be determined by number of wins in a given week, not by win/loss percentage. Thus, if someone submits their picks late, they're not rewarded for having a better win/loss percentage than someone who incorrectly picked on-time. When wins are equal/tied, the standings will be determined by the bonus points from tie-breakers. Only 1 person is given the bonus point for a tie-breaker each week, but weekly standings will also be determined by the previous week's tiebreaker (if necessary).
For example, in Week 1, WolfpackNev was the closest in predicting the BSU-VT score, so he gets the bonus/tiebreaker point (which counts in the standings long-term). However, norcaliangelsfan and rebelfan1 also tied for third with 8 correct picks each, however norcaliangels fan was closer to the BSU-VT score than rebelfan1 was, so he gets 'third' for the week.
G.) Because Week 1 only wound up with 13 games (since none of us picked the Thursday games) *and* because conference play is underway, each week will actually only be 13 games.
H.) Remember, the Pick 'Em contest's MWC standings include current members and verified future members (Nevada, Fresno State, Boise State).
With that said, here's Week 1's Standings and Picks:
And here's Week 2's match-ups to choose from:

I just loled at work! xD
I actually lived in Georgia for a couple years (Savannah). I will forever pick against them regardless of who they play or what they’re ranked just on principle alone.
Indeed
I actually don’t mind the people in Athens (i.e. actual UGA students), but the people who never even sniffed going there really give their fanbase a bad name.
Also, Savannah’s one of my favorite cities – I’m jealous you lived there.
by VA Libertarian on Sep 8, 2010 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Hm
Fair enough. My experiences with Savannah have been day trips from Columbia or Hilton Head, so I wouldn’t know about living there.
by VA Libertarian on Sep 8, 2010 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I’d go to Hilton Head 10 times out of 10 over Savannah, If it were not for friends I still have there. It’s got a lot of good things about it, but the economy there is aweful, so getting a decent job is really tough, and it has a lot of social issues.
Also of note, the BEST steak I ever had was in Hitlon Head. I get all emotional just thinking about it xD.
You want to hear something weird?
I grew up in Texas, and the best tacos I ever had were in Hilton Head. The island has some really good food.
I suppose I never thought about it from a economy/social view. When I think of Savannah, i just think of the beauty of downtown, open containers, and St. Patty’s Day.

Sorry I want BYU to be ranked when they face Nevada and I’m calling an upset for Wyoming beating Texas, I know theres going to be an upset somewhere. We want Bama to lose to help TCU and Boise NC hopes.
No Worries
You pickin’ UGA (and Wyoming) actually means we now have more contested pick contests (7) than not (6).So far, all 5 people entered this week have picked Nevada, Texas Tech, SDSU, TCU, ’Bama, and Utah.
Also, if you’re wrong, it could make the difference between you and I for first place overall. ;-)

I'm on Twitter
In case anyone's wondering...
7 people have cast picks, and it looks something like this…
Utah 7-0
TCU 7-0
San Diego State 7-0
Texas Tech 7-0
Nevada 7-0
Houston 6-1
Ohio State 6-1
Texas 6-1
Florida State 5-2
Alabama 5-2
South Carolina 4-3
Michigan 4-3
Air Force 4-3
So, I'm the only one who thinks Ohio State is gonna lose. Interesting.
I think the BCS win last year was a fluke. I predict they go back to choking in big games and giving the Big 10 a bad name this year.
I'm the only one picking UTEP
And it has nothing to do with my preference for UTEP over Houston, as vividly argued a few weeks ago. It has everything to do with Houston giving up 345 yards to FCS team Texas State, and being out-gunned on first downs 24-22 while giving up 28 points. Keenum also threw 2 interceptions despite only playing in the first half.
UTEP only gave up 278 yards and doubled its opponent’s first down total 28 to 14. UTEP also had a very balanced offense (229 passing, 234 rushing), with a stellar ground game (4 touchdowns).
I think that if the Miners are able to put any pressure on Keenum, Houston’s toast.

What I'm thinking now...
Is that instead of only dropping 1 week from everyone’s score, we’ll drop two. However, it’s honestly up to you, rebelfan1, and norcaliangelsfan, because it’s your scores that are being affected.
Depending on how many people wind up playing, we could also wind up having two tracks for the playoffs: 1.) Top x# of people with the highest scores and 2.) Top y# of people with the highest averages. (?)
by VA Libertarian on Sep 8, 2010 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions
I think we could go with dropping 2 instead of one
That way we can keep those scores instead of having to just drop them altogether… unless we want to drop it.

IDK
At my job we do a NFL pool based on point system on the 16 games.
For Example
16- Raiders vs Colts, you pick colts and if colts win you get 16 points if they dont you dont get any points.
you put a team you want to win in each slot numbering 1-16. Use the 1 slot for really close games that are like 50-50 like Packers vs Vikings. If they win you gain 1 point if you lose no points.
I'll throw my hat into the ring
Houston; in a game that could come down to who gets the ball last.
South Carolina; because I hate Georgia, and they will miss A.J. Green a lot.
Notre Dame; this to me is the hardest match-up to pick because they played and beat similar opponents in a similar fashion last week. Michigan-Notre Dame is a pretty big rivalry so you know both teams are going to want this one. Flip a coin, edge goes to the Golden Domers at home.
Oklahoma; again at home, and a win over a FBS team trumps the slaughter of an overmatched FCS team.
Ohio State; don’t quite think Miami has enough on offense to hang with OSU, should be a good game regardless.
Utah; although I think the score may be closer than some people think.
Air Force; because I hate BYU with every fiber of my being, plus I think the Falcons have enough to hang with the Coogs this year. 31-24 AF.
Texas; love my Cowboys, but this has emotional letdown all over it. The team may be fired up to win one for Ruben, but this has been a horrible week for UW football. Against almost any other opponent this would probably be a W, but this is Texas and the game is in Austin. R.I.P. Ruben.
Penn State; this isn’t going to be FCS San Jose St. that Bama is going up against. And reports are saying that Mark Ingram will not be able to go. Losing the Heisman trophy winner would be a huge blow to any team. Should be a close and entertaining game.
TCU; no explanation needed here.
San Diego State; only one team in the Land of Enchantment is worse, and that team is…
Seriously New Mexico? 72-0 seriously? Sad thing is the game wasn’t even as close as the score indicates. Probably better thank god Mike Leach isn’t coaching TT anymore or they might have hung 100 on you guys this week. They might anyway. Texas Tech.
Nevada; very disappointed in CSU’s showing last weekend. Don’t get me wrong, hate CSU pretty much as much as BYU, and I’m glad to see them lose, but I would like to see our conference mates do better against BCS competition, and CSU showed literally next to nothing.
Houston, big
South Carolina- looked great last week against a pretty decent Southern Miss team.
Michigan- is going to run ND into the ground. Both teams have questions, but Michigan’s answer at QB is vastly superior to ND’s.
Florida State-’s offense is perfectly suited to pick on that puffy looking 0U secondary.
Ohio State.
Utah
Air Force- the lack of their former D-coordinator will be offset by the inexperience of the BYU QBs.
Texas- close, but not quite.
Penn State- Penn State is going to challenge that ’bama D all over the field. Close, but I think the Lions pull it out.
TCU- Big.
San Diego State
Texas Tech- Tech at 24 is a bet ’til your hands bleed play. This would be an upset along the lines of Stanford beating USC, just because of how awful NM looked last week.
Nevada- Pistol for the win.
Don't forget your tiebreaker score of the Air Force-BYU game.

13 by my count
Or at least by the table I’m keeping in a Word document.
Updated pick count:
Houston 12-1
South Carolina 10-3 (I’m going to feel really bad if my Gamecocks screw the pooch – no pun intended)
Michigan 7-6
Florida State 8-5
Ohio State 11-2
Utah 13-0
Air Force 8-5
Texas 12-1
Alabama 9-4
TCU 13-0
San Diego State 13-0
Texas Tech 13-0
Nevada 13-0
That means only 5/13 contests are unanimous so far, and I’m quite surprised that nobody has picked Colorado State over Nevada. Yes, I think Nevada will win, but 13 out of 13 people thinking so? Damn. Mad respect for the Wolfpack, I suppose. TCU, SDSU, and Tech are no brainers, and though I’m not surprised Utah is unanimous, I am a little shocked that someone would pick Wyoming over Texas before picking UNLV over Utah.
by VA Libertarian on Sep 9, 2010 11:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Nah I perfer to have 1 long shot team
Wyoming will be playing their hearts out after their tragedy. Also Wyoming winning will help us.
Yeah, but...
In Austin? In front of 100,000 Longhorn fans? To a team with 9 or 10 straight 10-win seasons and 1 year removed from the National Championship game? I don’t think so. If you said “it’s going to be closer than anyone thinks,” I’d say you could be right. But pulling the upset? Wow – that’d be up there with App. State v. Michigan in my book.
by VA Libertarian on Sep 9, 2010 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions
I give the Pokes a chance to win...
Next week when they face Boise at home instead. I have the feeling with the week they’ve probably gone through, having to go play in Austin, they are probably going to get blown out of the water. If they were to somehow win this game, that would have to rank as probably one of the biggest wins in the history of the program I would say.
Also if Nevada doesnt commit massive turnovers like last year Nevada will light Colorado’s defense up like a christmas tree. Our defense may have problems so I dont expect a big blowout. My prediction 56-28. Nevada is a 22 point favorite.
I don't totally disagree
That’s why I picked Nevada, too.
All I’m saying is that people may be a little too high on Nevada for beating up a FCS team (and giving up 432 yards and 24 points in the process), and maybe a little too low on a CSU team that’s starting a freshman QB and had to play a BCS conference school (even if it is CU).
If the Rams can get some third-down conversions (they were 1/12 last week) and not turn the ball over as much (they had 3 turnovers), it should be a pretty competitive game.
by VA Libertarian on Sep 9, 2010 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions
In Nevada fans eyes we see this as warm up for the offense and adjustments for defense for the Cal and BYU in the next 2 weeks. Basically last weeks game didnt do much for us except for Taiwan Jones tore the defense to pieces with his speed.
by WolfpackNev on Sep 10, 2010 12:00 AM PDT up reply actions
I admit
The offense looked killer.
Let’s hope you’re right about the defense playing better this week.
At the same time, let’s hope this doesn’t become a trap game for your boys, what with the big games coming the next two weeks and CSU appearing awful against CU.
by VA Libertarian on Sep 10, 2010 12:03 AM PDT up reply actions
Worst case Scenario I see for the MWC in this game.
Nevada runs the score up like Oregon did to New Mexico.
Good for Nevada but I can see some whiplash from the MWC lol.
Nevada can only lose if we beat ourselves.
by WolfpackNev on Sep 10, 2010 12:10 AM PDT up reply actions
Eh
You’re probably right in that you’ll have to beat yourselves some to lose, but I definitely don’t think there will be any Oregon-style action in this game.
Everyone’s certainty about Nevada in this game just screams ‘upset’ to me – I dunno.
Again, the odds are strong with Nevada winning (and likely by 2 or 3 TDs), but I’m not sold this is the mismatch everyone thinks it is.

unlv game vs wisconsin was misleading. they had 12 total yards at halftime(unlv). their defense scored the td's
the second half was all wisky and they had more fans then unlv had. i live in vegas during all of college football season. 16,000 wisky fans came. they do it every year they come here. they are great for the spread too b/c the game went from – 19 points to 22.5 points final score 41 – 21 wisky. they did not cover if you waited for the wisky faithful to wager there money. utah is going to beatdown unlv something fierce if they don’t make the stupid penalties and of course turn the ball over.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. CSU went 3-9 last year...
this year they have a freshman QB, and their running game was non-existent. They’ve lost 10 games in a row dating back to last season. They only had 49 rushing yards against a team that finished 4th worst in the Big 12 last year. Somehow they beat Nevada last year so you know they are going to want some revenge for last season. If they have a repeat of the Colorado game, and why shouldn’t we expect them not to, this isn’t even going to be a close affair. If CSU wins this game it would be a huge upset.
Again
I don’t expect CSU to win… I just thought for sure that out of 13 people picking, at least 1 person would pick against Nevada before someone picked over Texas (if you think CSU’s an underdog…).

I think I may go insane
if Wyoming were to somehow pull the shocker over the Longhorns. Not to mention how that would look for the MWC BCS resume. But unfortunately this is reality and the Pokes are facing too many issues at the moment. As long as they play hard and leave it all on the field, I’ll be happy no matter what the outcome, well as long as it isn’t in the UNM range.

UTEP v. Houston – This is the most interested in this game I have ever been, and probably, ever will be. It’s been….. educational…. reading the arguments on both sides and it’s been predominately positive and cordial. Well done!
I’m enjoying this blog more and more each day. (Now if only I could get some positive results from the Rams).
Woot 1-0 so Far
But Its hard to believe that UTEP got blown up that easy.
But damn it Marshal you had that. Gah I thought Nevada or Fresno will break the top 25 this week because of that.
Yeah
That blew up in my face – lol.
Houston’s running game looked fantastic, and there offense has a lot more balance than I thought. However, Houston’s gonna need some defense if it expects to go far (they gave up 440 yds. and 24 first downs). I think UTEP could have gotten back back into the game if they hadn’t completely abandoned the balanced offense they had the week before (tonight they had a 55-21 pass-to-rush ratio). Unfortunately for the Miners, they got in a hole early and panicked. Not smart football.
