BlogPoll Week One Draft
Here is the blogpoll draft and here on the site the blogpoll is done by myself and Rebelfan1 and I vote based on who you played and how well you did, so teams who played bad teams might just move down.
Here is Rebelfan1's voting philosophy:
The way I vote is based on who you play and how good you look against them. So for instance, even though Florida beat Miami (OH) they looked terrible in that game. So they will drop significantly from the Pre-Season poll. But on the other hand, Ohio State whipped Marshall and would keep their spot as long as Boise State doesn't beat Virginia
Tech.
Prior to the jump will be the final poll then after the jump you will see how each of us voted.

SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings "
Technically there was a tie for the second highest spot as the second highest rated team, but since we both agreed Ohio State was third they get the nod there and then TCU gets the nod over Ohio State since they played someone. It is my site so I make the final call on ties. Also, when teams were not on both ballots but when I needed to fill out the top 25 I took who ever had the higher ranked team and was not on the other ballot that team went and then I alternated the next highest ranked team not on one of our ballots.

Oregon State
Apparently Oregon State was inadvertently left out at least on my ballot, not sure on Rebelfan1’s ballot. But they should be in the final on Wed. So dont get all cranky since they are not there.

they beat an FCS team
so that gets teams knocked down. This poll is quite fluid for the first 5 weeks or so.

Bias much?
BSU blew a 17 point lead and got a gift in the form of a no call on the block in the back and a late hit that shouldn’t have been called. I still think they’re top 5…but there is no way the should be moved up ahead of an OSU team who manhandled Marshall.
TCU snuck by a team that had a chance to win going into the last few minutes before the center blew a count and handed TCU a win. Likewise they’re still top 5 (maybe they take Florida’s spot), but they were not anymore impressive than any other team.
I like your site Jeremy..but BSU/TCU at 1 and 2 is a tad overkill with the Non-AQ bias.
I think its more that
BSU & TCU beat top-25 teams (or so they were considered at the time)… which would probably require close games because they’re top-25 opponents for a reason, while Ohio State beat not-so-good Marshall team. (I don’t know this for a fact of course, but I’m assuming that plays a role in it)

TCU might be high but they were one of few teams to beat a ranked team. Next week when TCU plays tenn tech they will surely drop, as will Boise when they play Wyoming whereas when OSU plays Penn state and win they’ll take over the top spot.

It'll balance out.
BSU is number one because they had the most impressive week of the top-five.
Bama and Ohio State have plenty of games to change that (especially Ohio State). Boise State has one left (Oregon State).
BSU is not #1 ..
I’m truly happy BSU won the game. But, they were extremely lucky on a couple of blown calls at the end of the game (block to the back and personal foul). With that being said, good teams get questionable calls to go their way. I’d leave BSU at #3. We’ll have a better idea of how the top teams look in 3-4 weeks. Way to go BSU and good luck the rest of the season!!
are you implying
good teams have psychic powers?
Making sense of it all takes a whole lot a concentration
did you not see the first quarter, i know its not a whole game but they still did win.

Special Teams was dominant and the D looked fairly solid against a good offensive team
but the offense hardly looked like the machine it did last year. They capitalized, but they didn’t really mount any big drives that weren’t assisted by BS calls. I think VT gave OSU and Nevada the blueprint to win, even if I don’t really think either of them will.
Good point
The blueprint Boise had in beating Nevada was to stop Kaepernick and the run game because we had no pass game to fall back on. This year if we get the passing game going like last game Boise might have a tough time.
That's more what the Mountain West Connection blog poll ballot
will be like for the first few weeks before we get some solidity.

UNLV is going all the way this year!
I watched the entire game.
BSU got off to a great start, some of it based on VT mistakes. One can argue that BSU caused their mistakes. However, VT pretty much dominated the game there after. Bad calls by the officials at the end of the game hurt VT. I’m not trying to take anything away from BSU. They are a fantastic team and deserve all the respect they have earned. I’m glad they won. I’d like to see them in the Championship game. I just think putting them at #1 so soon is a stretch. Until Alabama and Ohio State lose, regardless of who they played or how they played, BSU is #3. Just my opinion.

those are fair points
I just see beating Va. Tech much better then Marshall or San Jose State. Next week the number one team will be different with OSU and Alabama playing better teams then Boise.

Only if they win
If they’re both upset, then Boise St. won’t only be No. 1 ballot.

UNLV is going all the way this year!
But if OSU & Bama both lose...
maybe Miami or Penn State jump to #1 on SOS (even though their week 1 match-ups weren’t very inspiring with lower teams)?

Shame on you Rebel!!
For ranking Pitt above Utah. Utah was sloppy, ok I get that. But it was still clear from beginning to end that the Utes were a better team. Pitt was only in the game because of Shaky’s fumbles.
I only ranked Pitt above because they were ranked much higher in last weeks poll
And lost to a quality opponent in Utah. On the other hand Utah beat a 15th ranked team and moved up 5 spots in my poll (Mine wasn’t completed for the pre-season).

UNLV is going all the way this year!
I don't care if they were ranked #1 in the preseason and utah #119
The fact is they lost on the field, and Utah looked like the better team for most of the game. This line of reasoning is exactly why polls are bull crap. Polls should be ‘who is better than who’, not ‘how far do I drop someone from some imaginary pedestal that the media put them on because they “thought” they might be good based on opinion and hype.’
Bottom of the rankings...
Obviously I’m biased for my South Carolina Gamecocks (where’s the love, fellas?), but I can live with y’all not selecting them (even though the AP and Coaches did).
What I’m shocked at, however, is…
Auburn @ 18? Are you kidding? They gave up how many points to Arkansas State?
Missouri @23? Really? They were losing until the 4th, and barely beat Illinois – an absolutely awful team.
Oklahoma @10? They should have fallen farther. Beating Utah State by a touchdown is pretty weak for a ‘Top 10’ team. Especially at home.
Texas @7? I grew up a Longhorn fan, but they should have fallen farther. They looked miserable against Rice.
West Virginia… unranked? They looked pretty good to me, even if it was against an FCS team (which nobody knocked the likes of Arkansas and others for playing, apparently). Coastal Carolina (an FCS playoff team last year) only managed 186 yds. and 9 first downs versus the Mountaineers’ 400 yds. In contrast, Tennessee Tech (worse than CCU) managed 187 yds., 12 first downs, and 3 points against Arkansas, while holding them to less yardage (323).
these are drafts
And I know ill take into consideration these comments.

Fair enough
I’m just someone who pays more attention to 15-25 than 1-15. I think picking the top teams is pretty easy, in all honesty.

For what it's worth...
My Top 25:
I always do my weekly Top 25 in 5 phases:
-First, I rank how I feel each team looked compared to their conference mates, and rank the teams within their conference.
-Second, I look at my previous poll and the previous poll from the AP and coaches, and move teams within the polls based on how I think they looked.
-Third, I make a poll based on how I think everyone looked against their opponent that doesn’t bear in mind the previous week’s polls at all, and factor in how good I believe they are overall. Though I credit teams for good performances, if my gut tells me they couldn’t beat a certain team, I don’t rank them over that team.
-Fourth, I count the number of teams from each conference in the poll to make sure it ‘feels about right.’ Once I caught myself ranking 5 ACC teams, and had to pull back – lol.
-Finally, I synthesize my polls and create a Top 25.

UNLV is going all the way this year!
So I take it Boise St can expect to lose 3 spots every week after this until the end of the season?
Afterall, that is your philosophy for dropping Alabama to 4th and moving Boise St up to 1st. So I guess now that Oregon St. isn’t a top25 team, every week after this we should expect to see Boise St drop.
By week 8 they won’t even be a top 25 team anymore.
Obviously that has nothing to do with the reason Boise St moved up to #1 and why Alabama moved down to #4. It’s nothing more than the bias of the voter, and an excuse to try and cover it. A continuation of the media hype of the weekend.
And it’s not like Boise St really wowed anyone with that game. Boise ST got the 1st qtr jump is what made the difference. The early mistakes of VT proved to be too much.
V.Tech looked slower than normal to me on D, it wasn’t just a matter of execution. VT is down to #13. They lose a couple more games and Boise St. is gonna end up with a big fat 0 top 25 teams on their schedule. Which is very possible with the slow speed of VT. They are in the ACC, so they will be playing a few tough teams this year.
But I guess I should be use to the double standards by now. Alabama plays a cupcake and gets demoted for doing it. Meanwhile the team that is in the same conference as the cupcake and plays a schedule full of them is rewarded for the single tough game on the schedule.
Boise St doesn’t belong in the top10, let alone #1. This is actually a year when the MWC should be getting some attention, not Boise St. Both BYU and TCU might have a respectable SoS this year. You’ve got some pretty good teams in there. Utah, BYU, TCU and AirForce while not top25 is top50 if they keep up. With the couple of OOC games TCU and BYU have, they are the only 2 “BCS Busters” who should even be talked about at this point.
But nobody expects them to go undefeated because they do play the tougher schedules, and because TCU lost the bowl game.
Haters hate
Meanwhile, Boise State just keeps winning…
…vs. Virginia Tech
…vs. TCU
…vs. Oregon
…vs. Oklahoma
…vs. Utah
…vs. Oregon State
…vs. BYU
(you get the idea)
It’s hard to blame the Broncos for the fact that virtually nobody wants to play them.
by VA Libertarian on Sep 8, 2010 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions
I get the idea you don't understand what a season is.
You guys ALWAYS highlight only a light part of the schedule and pretend like that’s all that has been played. Even so far going back multiple seasons.
Maybe the fact you have to go back 3 seasons to list decent wins should clue you in?
And the part about nobody wanting to play Boise is a flat out lie. Boise St REFUSES OFFERS because they don’t like them. Boise St. is currently pressuring the NCAA to instate a rule that makes any offers by default “home and home” series.
Boise St has a stadium that seats 31,000 people. And they do not sell out their games. Meanwhile an Alabama or Penn St type schools seats over 100,000 and every game is a sellout. Even sell out the spring games etc.
In the FBS league, only 49 football teams make money. Of those 49 schools only like 10 of them make actual profit, because most of the money goes towards other athletic programs. The bowl games themselves make up only a small portion of money for the schools. The cities those games are played in are the ones that make the cash in tourism. The bulk of the cash for these programs comes from regular season games ticket sales, concession sales and so on. Plus it’s always good for local businesses.
There are huge costs associated with football. A few years ago when Alabama was down they couldn’t even afford for the band to travel to Oklahoma. Was reading about this on an article about Oklahoma being classy as their band played ‘Yea Alabama’ when Alabama entered the field.
Idaho which is out in the middle of no where, and has no recruiting value. Even Boise St doesn’t really recruit there, they recruit heavily in California.
So Boise St wants to make teams travel to their stadium. Which means they expect the other teams to bend over backwards and accommodate them. But it’s no where close to being an even deal.
Teams that would do a home and home with Boise St.
-Forced to take reduced payouts.
-Forced to travel long distances for a game that might not even cover the cost.
-Forced to travel to an area that has no recruiting value
-Forced to play on a field that is blue and gives people headaches.
And yet when Boise St travels to their games, they expect high payouts due to the stadium sizes and ticket sales. Which schools are more than happy to give them, but they are NOT going to travel to Boise St. the next year.
As such, Boise St turns down the offers. The closest anyone can come to making a deal with Boise St is on a neutral field.
And now they want to force the NCAA into making it a requirement. Then I guess they will be able to say nobody will play them, or the teams will have to take a huge hit to do it.
Boise St is the one that needs the help, not the other teams. They can travel to these other schools, get a payout that more than covers the trip, is an area that is good for recruiting and so on.
But no, they demand football socialism.
Do you know the history of Alabama? Did you know that there was a time when Alabama was the Boise St? And this was during a time when they didn’t have televised games and such. The bias was much much worse.
Alabama traveled the country just to play other teams and prove themselves. They became the “team of the south” in doing so. It’s why the Rose Bowl is mentioned in our fight song, and it’s what built up the huge tradition at Alabama. Back in those days it was just an exhibition game, but Alabama still traveled the country for it and would beat teams they were supposed to.
And that is exactly what Boise St should have to do. They need to quit pretending like they bring the same to the table as these other teams, travel to them and beat them.
I have no direct complaints or hate towards Boise St. at all. I generally like and root for the underdogs in sports. But rewarding a team like Boise St with the weak schedule they play sets a bad precedent in college football. We need to be putting more emphasis on having tough schedules, not less. If Boise St is rewarded for this schedule, then why should Alabama play Penn St in the season? Why should Ohio St. play Miami this weekend? Why not just schedule more cupcakes to ensure you go undefeated? I freaking love those games. I’m an Alabama fan and I scold my team for playing Georgia St, San Jose St and so on. I know it’s done as a favor to Georgia St, but they shouldn’t have that game on the schedule period. SJSU is atleast a FBS team, but still I’d much rather see that game against a quality opponent.
It’s too bad the MWC was gutted this year, it is so close to being a contending conference.
Oh, what do you know.
http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/16875/nebraska-tried-to-schedule-boise
In the past year, NU tried to put together a series with BSU; two-for-one, home-and-home, one-way trip to Lincoln. Whatever. It ended up fizzling out. Why?
Because, according to NU Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Jamrog, Boise wanted a minimum $1 million to play in Lincoln.
