Ideal MWC results for Week 1

I always want to see my team, the CSU Rams, do well and have all others in our conference lose.  But with the BCS AQ bid virtually beyond grasp now, I'm all for rooting on MWC members in non-conference games.  So, with that in mind, and with changes coming in the next couple of years, what exactly would be the ideal result for the MWC?

Star-divide

Utah vs. Pitt - I would like to see the Utes get blown out.  Now I'm not sure...does their record count for the MWC for BCS reasons this year?  If that is the case, I would grudgingly root for them in non-conference games.

AFA vs. Northwestern State - I'm rooting for the Cadets to handle business with ease here.

CSU vs CU - Of course the Rams are gonna handle business and thrash another future Pac12 team.

New Mexico vs. Oregon - Is it asking too much to have a huge upset here?

BYU vs. Washington - Again...I would like to see the departing MWC team get a beat down.  But again...at what point do we stop counting their victories toward the BCS.

TCU vs. Oregon St. - TCU takes care of business against yet another Pac10 team.

SDSU vs Nicholls - SDSU with another fairly easy non-conference win.

Wyoming vs. Southern Utah - I didn't realize their was yet another Utah team to root against this weekend.

UNLV vs. Wisconsin - Another miracle needed here for the MWC team.

Nevada vs. Eastern Washington - I guess time to root for them to win a non-conference game?  When do their victories start counting for the MWC BCS bid?

Fresno St vs. Cincinatti - Should be a good game.  Would be nice to see Fresno State win.

Boise St. vs Virginia Tech - Here is rooting for the Broncos to bring more glory to the non AQ schools...regardless of when we can claim their success.

So do we immediately start rooting for our incoming MWC partners and against the hated Utes and Cougers?  Or are we pulling for those turncoats still?  Help me out!

Utah and BYU's

stats don’t count for the MWC in the current BCS cycle because they left before the Sept. 1 deadline. So by all means root against them with the utmost vigor, I know I will be. Boise St.‘s stats do count for us, so hopefully they’ll make a run to the NC if it’s not TCU. Nevada and Fresno St. is up in the air at this point. If they are able to leave the WAC before the 2011 season begins, then yes their stats will count for the MWC. If the WAC doesn’t let them out before then, their stats won’t count until 2012, which will be the beginning of the new evaluation cycle anyway.

thanks!

I was thinking as much, but I appreciate you clearing it up for me. Last thing I want this year, regardless, is to have either BYU or Utah win the conference championship. It would be like a slap in the face of the entire conference and salt on the wound.

maybe, maybe not

It seems like the ideal path would be for Utah to finish 2nd or maybe 3rd (behind Air Force or your beloved Rams, perhaps?), then go challenge at the top of the Pacwhatever next year. Then the MWC can make an argument that their league is just as hard to win as the BCS conferences.

As for BYU..whatever. But I don’t think you have to worry about them winning it this year.

Best Case Scenarario

I think ideally we want Utah & BYU to win out of conference and then get swept in conference. Wouldn’t that lower the other conferences’ stats while raising the MWC?

by Smoove V on Sep 3, 2010 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Correct

But at the same time, you kind of want to have Utah and BYU do well so that when the BCS looks at the teams we produced, they’re not some rollovers…

Root FOR BYU and Utah in their OOC games, but AGAINST in-conference.

OOC wins helps out their SoS, which in turn helps the MWC teams when they play in-conference. Utah’s win last night was good for the MWC’s autobid potential, even if it’s a very minor difference.

Sorry to bust the bubble

But the Utes are going to win the conference as a farewell tour. I can’t say the same about BYU, go ahead and have fun punking them at every chance, but you won’t be able to handle the Utes.

Have you heard of this team

I think their called the TCU Horned Frogs…

you sir are a genius. utah is going to roll all year. the only team that has a chance is tcu.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. Utah and Boise take care of business in week one. Don't be surprised if they both go undefeated.

Nevada Won

Nevada’s offense looked real good but defense needs major work.
I hope Eastern Washington wins the FCS National championship that will make Nevada look really good after giving up 24 points.

With the BCS AQ on life support here is what the MWC needs:

Boise State and TCU
These two teams will be the top of the conference come time to determine the MWC status for 2012 and 2013. They also carry most of the weight for criteria 1 and 3 of the AQ determination. These two teams need top 10 finishes. One can drop back a bit if the other runs the table. If they combine for more than two losses that is very bad for the MWC.

BYU and Utah
These two traitors teams will be gone for the evaluation and will not count for the MWC. With eight games against MWC teams their strength needs to be high, so the MWC will fair better in the computers. It is best for the MWC when these teams win out of conference and lose in conference.

As long as neither actually wins the MWC, the MWC is in good shape.

If Utah does well in the PAC 10 in 2011 that will be strong support for the MWC’s case.

Air Force and Wyoming
Ideally one of these teams would be ranked at the end of the year. Both have reasons to believe they can knock off one of the top MWC teams, but tough out of conference games that make a top 25 run unlikely.

Fresno State and Nevada
One or both of these teams really needs to get ranked this year. Even if they are delayed by the WAC until 2012, the contracts to move could allow their numbers to be considered in the exemption process.

CSU, UNLV, New Mexico and SDSU
These teams need to pull up the bottom of the conference. The MWC can do far more to improve the computer average by improving these teams than by adding any team.

These teams need to win 75% of their out of conference games if the MWC is ever going to catch the AQ conferences in the computer average. If they can do that, it does not matter if they go 0-8 in conference.

Agreed

As far as the bottom feeders go, I think SDSU will be a bowl team this year which means winning at least 75% of their non-conference games. New Mexico will only win against New Mexico State. UNLV has a chance to atleast win two games and CSU could win 3.

Fresno beats 2 time Big East defending champ Cinnci

Fresno off to a good start so far. They still got 2 BCS schools(ole miss and Illinois) left on their schedule and Nevada has Cal and BYU in the coming weeks.

by WolfpackNev on Sep 5, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Nevada vs. BYU is an interesting case...

I think it is best for the MWC if Nevada wins that one.

As for Fresno State’s OOC games, Fresno State is no Jacksonville State.

Meh

This was like when the Houston crowd was bragging about beating up on crappy Mississippi State teams and LSU the year it went 3-9. Beating an ‘SEC team’ doesn’t mean much if said team sucks (either overall or in a given year). That’s like saying ‘hey, we beat Vanderbilt!’ Nobody cares – lol.

bama lost to louisiana monroe in 2007

they were like the second worst team in the sunbelt that year.

I'm aware

Bama was also 7-6 that year with a new coach, new schemes, and in rebuilding mode, if I recall. 7-6 teams can have fluke losses, last I checked.

Also, I wouldn’t get too uppity considering Utah lost to New Mexico and Wyoming that same year.

i respect the sec but a few things needed to be mention like the always 7 home games for everybody and usually 8 home games for the better teams.

fresno can do boise a big favor by beating illinois and ole miss. when they play boise they would be....

at 9 wins and that would be another quality win for boise.

They can help themselves by beating Illinois and Ole Miss

They will be ranked if that happens and both Nevada and BSU get another top 25 opponent on their schedule. Plus they definitely help the MWC’s BCS Rankings.

there were seven wins by non aq bcs schools vs bcs schools. 2 were by fcs schools and the rest were by mwc schools or schools heading for mwc.
