Thanks to Todd Wright at Sporting News Radio who passed along this interview to me with LaVell Edwards who for those who do not know he is the former BYU coach and it amazingly has been ten years since he retired.
LaVell's take on this is that he believes teams should be in a conference and that he was very surprised and that this came out of the blue that BYU is going independent. Edwards also says that Tom Holmoe and the other higher ups are not dumb and they would not be making this move without doing their extensive research.
The scheduling issue is what concerns LaVell if BYU goes independent, and even by playing four to six WAC teams plus Utah filling those other games will be tough especially in late October and November.
The Holy War comes up here and LaVell feels that the rivalry will take a small hit if both are in different leagues.
Overall this is solid listen to from the former great BYU head coach.
