Predicting The Season: BYU Cougars @ Florida State Seminoles
The Cougars are 1-1 in this fan voting series and will be in a tough spot as they travel to Tallahassee to take on an improved Florida State team with an experienced quarterback making a Heisman run. BYU will be bringing in an inexperienced quarterback when they take on the Seminoles whether it be Jake Heaps or Riley Nelson, all while still trying to find out who will be the feature back in either J.J. Di Luigi or Bryan Kariya.
My early prediction is that Florida State will be able to defeat the Cougars between 7-14 points, well unless the home woes that the Seminoles encountered last year then BYU might be able to make a game out of it with Florida State.
BYU is ranked 45th while Florida State is 14th in the Sporting News top 100. The game will be on ESPNU (and maybe in HD) with a kick is at 3:30 p.m. eastern time on Saturday September 18th.
Voting lasts 24 hours and will begin everyday at 11am mountain time.

Okay lets make sense of this..
Last year BYU lost by well 3 TD!!!
BYU team is worse off this year than last year.
FSU offense will be the same or better..
FSU Defense will be much bigger/stronger and in a relevant scheme which should result in them being about 50% better than last years horrible defense.
FSU has home field advantage…
And all of this equals your prediction that “Florida State will be able to defeat the Cougars between 7-14 points” or have some chance of an upset??
Hate to break it to you...
FSU kileed BYU in Provo last year with a better BYU team. BYU has to play in Florida Heat and Humidity, FSU will win by 4-5 TDs. C’mon.

i agree. it could get mighty ugly and i can see jimbo fisher putting first and second team dl
in the game. byu’s qb or qb’s could be in serious trouble and i don’t expect any mercy from fsu.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion.

The margin was big beacuase of all the BYU turnovers – without them it is a much closer game – this year could be closer than last year
True.
However, I don’t think the turnover situtation will be any better for BYU next year. Heaps or Riley are both pretty untested (the WAC competition Riley faced at USU, outside of Boise, has not prepared him for the MWC or FSU, and of course Heaps is a true FR) and, unlike Maxi (a Senior), whoever is starting for the Y will have no running game to lean on (since Unga is out).
I actually think last year’s BYU team would be able to win this game (and they could have won last year’s game if they’d played a little smarter), but this year’s BYU team is an 8 or 9 win team, and they’ll have trouble (like most BYU teams) with speed, which FSU has in bunches.
I think FSU wins by a similar margin, but a lower score. Say 10-34 instead of 28-54

BYU was a better team than the score indicated last year
5 turnovers was an anomoly.
- The 2 fumbles in the first half helped FSU get to an early lead. Fumbles happen, you never know which team will get the bad luck. I think last years team this was abnormal bad luck. Given a green QB and RB there might be 2 fumbles this year. Who knows.
- The 3rd turnover, an interception for a touchdown was the worst no-call I have ever seen in my life. The BYU tight end (I forget which one) had his defender beat. The defender saw this and grabbed the jersey of the tight end pulling him backwards and slingshoting the defender into position for the interception with momentum for the long pick six. If the call would have been made BYU was in scoring position. I wouldn’t count on a bad call like this again.
- BYU started playing desperate because they were behind and got out of their game plan. Max then threw 2 more picks playing wild. After beating Oklahoma BYU had grand hopes of a National Championship. They were let their emotions make them desparate. I wouldn’t count on a BYU team will get desperate like last year.
My point of the above is to say I wouldn’t count on 5 turnovers again and BYU was a better team than the score indicated last year. I AM NOT TRYING TO EXPLAIN AWAY THE LOSS. FSU CLEARLY DESERVED TO WIN THAT GAME. In my opinion though, if you could erase time and move the clock back to play the game again it would be a much closer game.
That said, with BYU on a downturn and having to play in Florida I think FSU wins the game this year too.
FSU was up 30 points when it pulled its starters, no?

BYU's guy pushed off before Reid grabbed him. Good double-no call.
Agreed on the fumbles.

49-27 is my pick. FSU’s offensive line made BYU’s defensive line and linebackers look like a D2 team. This year BYU projects to be a worse team and the game is in Tallahassee. I don’t think BYU coughs it up as much, I think FSU physically dominated more than last year. Even so, smaller win this time around.
BYU’s athletes are like the guys was saw last year at Wake Forest. Very very small. Perhaps the smallest defense FSU will face all season.

hate it, but have to agree
BYU will struggle to even keep it close. BYU has no established WR play maker, but the two they have are good but not great. The defense always struggles and they lost their best ends and LBs. Not to mention a rookie QB. Bud, your’e score is possibly generous in BYU getting that many points.

Another angle
Stoops and the Stoops bros have put the most memorable beatdowns on the AirRaid of late.
Remember OU > TTech in ’08? Or heck, Arizona > BYU in 2008 in Vegas. Sonny Dykes at Arizona runs the system BYU runs. Stoops saw it every day in practice. He knows it inside and out. Ditto Bob Stoops who had Mike Leach and Mangino at OU before they were HCs.
Sorry for my atrocious typing. Not sure what happened there.
