Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

So, much for there not being any interest in Texas to the Big 10. Now there is an email stating that Texas is interested in joining the Big 10.

Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee sent an e-mail to Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany on April 20 saying that he had spoken with Texas President William Powers.

"I did speak with Bill Powers at Texas, who would welcome a call to say they have a 'Tech' problem," Gee wrote in an e-mail that was among several obtained by The Dispatch through a public-records request for documents and correspondence related to Big Ten expansion proposals.

i think if texas had their way they would goto sec or maybe they think the big ten would

be an easy schedule?

I get the feeling

that Texas doesn’t really like any option right now.

First off, like this article mentions, texas “has a TECH problem”. If UT goes…they have to take Tech. A&M can stand on it’s own.

I think the only conference UT won't consider is the SEC

The Academics seem to be the main reason why UT would be interested in the Big 10 or Pac 10. Recall that in ‘96 UT wanted to join the Pac 10 but the legislature wouldn’t let them because the Pac 10 didn’t want Tech and/or A&M. That’s why, if the PAC 10 is serious now, about forgetting their academic requirements and inviting Texas Tech, the move might still make sense for UT. The Horns have had success in the Big 12 South which would now be the Pac 16 East. And, the academic recognition would still be improved by the existing Pac 10 schools.

i think texas would have a harder time with an sec schedule then big ten schedule.

you probably right about the academics so will it be the pac-ten or big ten in your opinion?

If I had to bet my paycheck, I'd say the Pac 10

All the pieces fit. First, Tech, A&M, and OU would still be in the same division. Actually, it’d be almost the exact same thing as the Big 12 south, so no rivalries are lost and geographically it makes sense. Second, the academic reputation of the league would dwarf that of the existing Big 12. Also, Texas continues to play in warm climates. Call me crazy, but Texas recruits don’t want to play at Penn State or Wisconsin in November. The fans and players would much rather be in Tucson or Los Angeles.

Travel wouldn’t be difficult, UT would only have to travel out of their comfort zone once or twice a year. Also, Texas wanted into the Pac 10 in 1996. I’ve probably posted this article like 34 times on various SBN blogs, but check this out. THIS ARTICLE is from the San Antonio Express News and it chronicles how the current Big 12 formed today. It will give you some incredible insight into how the legislature and UT’s obsession with academic clout influenced the formation of the current Big 12. After reading this article, and examining the Pac 10’s proposal, I can’t help but think it’s a perfect match for UT. The Pac 10, by including Texas Tech and OSU, made a concession that the Big 10 didn’t want to. The “Tech” problem won’t come into play there.
