Predicting The Season: Week One Pittsburgh @ Utah
Time for some summer fun in having fans vote on the outcome of all Mountain West games (minus FCS games since those will be counted as wins). The first matchup is Pitt from the Big East against Utah. All rankings will be used from The Sporting News' top 100 since they have their list fully published and it will entail nearly every team, and will provide a guideline of who is the better team. Plus, a projected weather notice will be put in here as well, plus the top returning starters. Have fun in the comments by predicting the score and to have some healthy smack talk.
| Utah | Pittsburgh |
| QB Jordan Wynn 1,329 yards 8 touchdowns |
QB Tino Sunseri 114 yards 2 touchdowns |
| RB Matt Asiata 330 yards 4 touchdowns |
RB Dion Lewis 1,799 17 touchdowns |
| RB Eddie Wide 1,020 yards 12 touchdowns |
RB Ray Graham 349 yards 4 touchdowns |
| WR Jereme Brookes 56 receptions 696 yards | WR Jonathan Baldwin 1,111 yards 8 touchdowns |
| WR Luke Matthews 9 receptions 108 yards | WR Mike Shanahan 211 yards |
Voting lasts 24 hours and will begin everyday at 11am mountain time.

Flame away, but I like Pitt
They’re going to have a stout defense, and a pretty potent rushing attack. Their passing game will leave something to be desired, but I think they’re going to be a smidge too tough for Utah.
Those will probably be my famous last words, and this wouldn’t be the first time Utah has made me look stupid, but I say Pitt 21 Utah 20
Hard to argue that score
This will be the best game, but ESPN will be pumping the crappy South Carolina game and the later USC game against Hawaii. I could see either team winning, and it should be close. I give the edge to Utah because it is at home and Pitt is starting a new QB, but if Dion Lewis is able to rip off some big runs then Utah could be in trouble.

That's my thought
I like Wynn, he’s gonna be a stud, but I’m not sure he’s quite ready to lead this team to the “promised land”. Come 2011/2012 when they get in the Pac-10, they’ll have one hell of a team in SLC.
As for Pitt, they play smash mouth football, and I think it’s gonna be just enough to sneak by. Not touching that game from a betting standpoint, but I’ll certianly be sitting down with a couple beers on September 2nd to watch a slugfest.
Smash Mouth Football
So did Alabama… Just sayin’

No bias here!
Really. These are completely objective votes.
I wonder if Utah will do well once the conference games get started here. They might even come in fourth.

21-20
Sounds reasonable and could go either way. I don’t expect a blowout from either team.
I think people underestimate Pitt’s talent, especially on offense. They have not been great in first games, at Utah will be tough so . . .
Given Pitt plays at Utah I think Utah maybe has an edge that on a neutral field I’d say was a push.
Thing about Utah was they did not have a bad offense last year, but they had too many series of absolute futility that looked unimaginative play-calling wise—tons of three and outs in big games that left the opposing D fresh and with great morale. They have not picked up a new OC so Brian Johnson will have to have a huge impact coaching-wise for them to have improved measurably, and they have to keep their D off the field more.
One other item: Pitt got about 10% of the penalties Utah does (in games I watched at least)—that could be trouble for da Utes.
It's going to be a tough opener
It really sucks that ESPN won’t be covering this game as it definitely the best matchup of the night, and arguably opening weekend.
I agree that there is a lot of bias on the votes as I’m sure that not many PITT fans are coming to this page to throw in their vote. This is a game that Utah can win if they come out and they execute the way that they should. PITT is going to put up a tough fight, and they are a good enough team that if Utah makes mistakes, they will be able to capitalize on those mistakes. There is very little room for errors if Utah wants to come out and win this game. I think that with all of the recent hype of going to the PAC-10, Utah will come out with something to prove and they will be ready to compete and show the world that they can and that they will compete. I don’t think we will see a 21-0 jump the way the Sugar Bowl started because PITT won’t be taking the Utes lightly and they want this win just as much as Utah does. In the end, this game will be decided by less than 7 points.
My predicted score: Utah 24 PITT 20

Utah, being the home team, has the TV rights.
Utah does not have an ESPN contract (nor does the MWC).
The game will be on the nationally distributed versus.
Any word on where ESPN Gameday will start the season? ESPN has picked games they don’t have the rights to.

correct
they went to 3 MWC games last year. I bet they will be in Atlanta for UNC vs. LSU in Atlanta

They won't start it in SLC
the game is on a Thursday and I don’t think they make a habit of going to the location of the already played game.
And beside the LSU/UNC game, they could opt to choose OSU/TCU as well.
UTAH 24 PITT 20
I’d love to see a blow out… and if PITT’s pass D isn’t up to par it will be…. but I think this score is far…. no one really knows anything until the end of the 1st 1/2.
