FIFA World Cup Open Thread

nshot moved to the front page

The information may have changed in this post, but since it is our active World Cup thread we will keep the comments intact.  USA faces Ghana today at 200pm eastern time.  USA advanced off of an amazing goal against Algeria in extra time.

Ghana is the loan African team left in the World Cup, and is the team that knocked out the USA in the 2006 World Cup 2-1 in pool play.  In this World Cup Ghana was second in group D, where they tied Australia, beat Serbia, and lost to Germany. As a reminder (and some extra motivation) here is the video evidence of that loss to Ghana in 2006.

For a thorough preview of this game check out this post from SB Nation's soccer guru Richard Farley. Follow that link all day since it will be updated throughout the game.

Best I've seen

the US play in a long time (well, the spain match was pretty good too). If we can play like the 2nd half for the rest of the cup we could make a run at this thing. Can’t wait for tomorrow!

other than that, I’m not sure.

BSU has a really good women's team

made the NCAA tourney last year…but alas, you won’t get them until 2011…just in time for one of my good friends from Tucson to make and start on the team

that is the largest fanpost i have ever seen.

don’t know much about soccer but it would be nice to beat algeria.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Craig Thompson just might end up being a savvy guy if he gets the MWC to 12 teams. Hell is just a word, the reality is much much worse." I agree...

this is a pretty long fanpost.

i didn’t know much about soccer either until I started watching the WC. It’s actually a lot of fun to watch. And it will be nice when we beat Algeria

International soccer is fun!!

Going to games is even good as well since you see more of the action and can see why that long pass was made. Where as on TV it looks like a player is clearing the ball. Even going to Real Salt Lake games is fun since you see the whole action even though it is not the highest level.

That was an awesome goal that was just at the right time. No time left for Algeria to really do anything….

who will be favored between the united states and ghana?

we have south korea in our bracket too. i don’t know too much about soccer but i don’t think the south korean’s are anybody’s powerhouse. i think we just might advance again.

Dude, you're absolutely right...HOWEVER

S. Korea is a darkhorse who made the semis in 2002…Brackets are as follows:

We should be able to beat Ghana, then we’ll face the S.K./Uru winner. IF WE WIN THAT, then we’ll play either: Holland, Slovakia, Brasil or Spain (Those last two have to hold the standings tomorrow for this to be correct). Time to pray for a miracle

the agony of defeat. zhit.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Fedor: He once had an awkward moment in the cage, just to see what it feels like. Sharks have a week dedicated to him. He would show his feminine side if he had one. He is a lover, not a fighter, but don't get any ideas. He is the most important man in the world. Stay thirsty my comrades b/c i will never fight in the UFC. Sorry Fedor but in America Budweiser is the King of beers and Lesnar is a clydesdale while Fedor is just a mule. Beating Werdum proves nothing. Beat Lesnar, Carwin. JDS, Velasquez or Overeem and i'll be impressed. Just one of them. College Football is still the best sport out there.

I can’t believe we gave up that goal so early in extra time.

@ Go Rammies " How many MWC schools have soccer as a sport? -——- I know CSU doesn’t."

New Mexico has a soccer program. A pretty good one at that too. We (Men’s) made it to the National title game in 08…. Lost 1 nill to Maryland but for the past years we’ve been making it to the national tournament. The women are famous for Elizabeth Lambert LoTi. Look her up if you don’t know who she is.

We lacked competence against Ghana

I love Team USA and its players but against Ghana we did NOT play our best ball. There were many moments where USA could have decided the game but lacked the ability to get the ball in the net. Not picking on the players but Bradley had a spectacular chance 1-on-1 with the keeper and simply couldn’t dribble him out of position for an easy goal. Altidore never seemed to know what to do with the ball just about every time it came to him in the box and didn’t try to run after the ball if the passes didn’t land right on his foot. This World Cup was of course one of the best the US has ever played and US soccer shows it has made a lot of progress in recent years. Now we just gotta get ready for 2014.

i say we win a world cup before tiger wins another major. lol.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. 45 days and counting to the first game of college football. UTAH vs Pitt. September 2nd 2010.
