Utah Officially Joining Pac-10
A press conference is scheduled tomorrow at 1pm mountain time and Utah will officially announce they are going to the Pac-10. There is the formality of Utah's Board of Trustees who will hold a public meeting Thursday at 12:30 p.m. (mst). Do not expect any votes to stay in the Mountain West the money is too big and it will be nearly seven fold in television money:
The biggest payoff for the Utes should be in TV revenue. For the 2008-09 year the Utes reported just $1.2 million in TV revenue from the MWC. Teams in the Pac-10 make $8-10 million. A new TV agreement is expected to increase that amount.
Following the Utah press conference, Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson is holding a teleconference at 2pm (mst) where he most likely will discuss Utah leaving the Mountain West.

Just curious...
I live in Pac-10 territory but grew up in SEC country. The first Final Four I remember watching in its entirety culminated in a Utah versus Kentucky final and I have been hooked to college hoops ever since. My question is this, I have loved watching the MWC grow and become a true contender these last few years and wanted to see them get an AQ berth even though I don’t have a dog in the hunt so to say, so I would like to know what you see the MWC doing next? I don’t want to see a growing, promising conference die, especially when it is better ran than the Texas Ten.

I think the remaining Mountain West School
are very curious as well.
My gut thinks the Mountain West stands stands pat until 2012 when they will know if they have BCS AQ status. The only other plausible scenario I see is to invite Houston to replace Utah.
Okay, but doesn't that just give the conference 11?
Who would fit as the twelfth? Or is the conference happy without going to 12? Or, I am sorry if this verges on heresy, do they merge with the new Pac?

Still a nine team conference
with the addition of Boise St and the subtraction of Utah. If we invited Houston, there would be 10 teams.
I think the conference will expand to 12 but I don’t know the timetable. My best guess is it’s later rather then sooner.
Thanks
I don’t know why i keep trying to give ya’ll a team, though I am sure ya’ll wouldn’t turn one down? Would you like Washington State, I am sure they would like the chance to win 2 or 3 games a year.

I wouldn't take Washington State
They hurt us in every aspect.

12 seems to be the magic number for now
I’d go with some combination of Houston, SMU, Fresno State and Nevada… not hard to do East/West divisions with any of those. And of course hope that solidifies the MWC enough that you don’t get poached by the Big 12 once they figure out that 10 teams was a stupid idea.

Good point
Bigger school and bigger TV market than Reno, not sure how the TV draw would compare to SMU in Dallas but again a much larger school.
by commodore_dude on Jun 16, 2010 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions
UTEP is the only thing in El Paso
And are followed intensely by at least 50,000+ fans… SMU??? Having the Dallas market on our record is good but I think SMU only has 5,000 of those kinds of fans compared to UTEP. So 45,000 more people that subscribe to The Mtn. would give us more money than having the Dallas market.

Dallas and Fort Worth tend to get lumped together as far as markets go. Adding SMU brings TCU’s natural rival around, but until they have a bit more sustained success they only hurt our stats.

Don't underestimate SMU boosters
Those guys are crazy about throwing money at the program to get it back to the glory days.
Not that that makes SMU a must-get for the MWC, but still…
"Lord, beer me strength."
i sometimes get the reno gazette and their sportwriter's certainly want in the mwc.
just get rid of chris ault, the wolfpacks coach(he will probably be gone anyway by then) and then the mwc should go after them.

Kinda Sad to see it happen
The MWC is so close to breaking into the big time…and Utah would/was one of the premiere teams at the head of the league.
Oh well.

You led the Mountain West to the gates of BCS milk and honey. Now it is up to the rest of us to open them up and join you.
Just sayin
Got enough but you want it all
In it for greed now you’re gonna fall
Here we come gonna ruin your day
Time has come It’s your turn to pay
The mighty dollar is your only care
You’re movin’ up but you’re going nowhere
You say you only want to get your share
But you still want more no you won’t play fair
you’ll never ever quit you won’t be denied
You sit and watch your money multiply
To get what you want you’ll cheat and lie
But I know – you won’t be satisfied
Today is a good day for suffering

Explain to me then how CU was invited and a sure lock for the pac10 and Utah was second fiddle to one of the worst football teams this decade if it’s all about bcs bowls?

Colorado has been to the BCS in the aughts (killed by Oregon), and has won the Big 12 North on at least three occasions. Winning the Big 12 North doesn’t mean much, but it’s still something. Historically, CU is well above average.

I'm with you!
Utah has slipped in right behind New Mexico State and Mississippi State as schools I hope lose every game they play. Bastards! I hope that leg-humping Pac -Whatever conference fails terribly.
I honestly think that Utah was afraid of being third or fourth best in the MWC so they jumped ship. Have fun finishing lower in your new conference, which is still never going to amount to the SEC and probably not the (New) Big 12 10 either.

Weak sauce
That’s what this is…weak sauce. I was really excited to see what the MWC could do to the power conferences over the next few years….well I still am. Boise State has some games with the Utes and BYU still has some hatred. Guess what Utah…enjoy joining the PAC 10 and the BCS loss column to non-AQs. Good luck, and well deserved though.
by ThePhlipinSituation on Jun 16, 2010 3:03 PM PDT reply actions
Actually, upon thinking a little further
The ideal situation for the MWC would be to see Utah join the Pac-X and win the conference in year one (especially if they finish third again in their last year in the MWC). If anything would give the conference respect. . .

It would hurt more
Because the Pac-10 is one of the conference the MWC is trying to jump in the BCS AQ Qualifcation Criteria in category two. So if Utah does really well, their stats go up even more in helping the Pac-10.

Only if they do really well relative to D-I CFB in general
If they win the Pac-10 though (even if they lose the Rose Bowl) after finishing 3rd (or even 2nd) in the MWC, it says that the MWC has 1-2 more teams that are better than the best the Pac-10 has to offer.

I’ll miss you guys, Utah. I was just starting to hate you, in a good way. I’ll be rooting for you in your OOC, against you when you play MWC teams, and for you from whenever you join the Pac-12 on.
I don’t feel nearly as hurt and betrayed as the rest of the MWC, likely, simply because TCU has always been looking to find a way to move up in the conference world. From WAC to CUSA to MWC, and I know that if we were afforded a similar opportunity we’d jump at it as well. Make sure you stop by OOC, y’hear?

I know that this is ALL about football, but...
I’m a college bball fan more than anything, so I’m going to write this from that perspective. I’m going to be sad to see Utah go to a different conference. I hated them in the best way regardless if it was the MWC or the WAC. I have lots of memories of great rivalry games that included matchups like Kenny Thomas vs. Michael Doleac or Charles Smith vs. Keith Van Horn, Danny Granger vs. Andrew Bogut, and Royce Olney vs. Andre Miller.
I remember instantly hating whatever white giant was perennially stationed at center, and looking intently forward to seeing them vs. the Lobos at the Pit. I remember being jealous of the fact that Utah had a coach like Rick Majerus.
It’s been a great long term basketball rivalry for sure, and I know that I’ll have one less game to look forward to. Even though Utah has struggled of late on the basketball court, I always knew they’d be back before long. For me, it’s just going to be tough to get all psyched about going up against whatever school takes their place on the schedule. There’s something to be said for traditional rivals, and I’ll miss hating you as much as I have, Utes.
Now I’ll just have to double up my hatred on BYU until I find a suitable successor to Utah.
