Utah Gives Mountain West Intentions On Heading To Pac-10

Tom Cella from the Utah Rivals site UteZone.com has information that Utah is on their way to the Pac-10:

Sources are telling me that Utah informed the MWC of its intentions to leave the conference today. Working to confirm this.

If true it looks like the Mountain West will be the same league in 2011 as they swapped Boise State for Utah since all signs point toward Utah bolting West to join the Pac-10.  Look for official news on this later today or tomorrow.

they have their own set of plans and houston is the fourth biggest market in the nation. if they wanted texas a&m they surely would want houston. ever been to college station texas?, yikes. plus houston is now a better team than a&m. a&m would be the vandy of the other side of the conference.

From a football perspective...

trading Utah for Boise State is a draw. The swap will be a wash for the MWC on the football field. It’s too bad Utah might leave .. but who can blame them? Let’s hope we don’t lose anyone else. Looks like Big XII won’t expand ….. for a while anyway. My guess is we don’t replace Utah and continue to operate as a 9 team league.

by LoboJo on Jun 14, 2010 7:42 PM PDT reply actions

might be a good time . . .

For the MWC to go after Fresno State, get a second California School, more exposure.

by MeanBobMean on Jun 15, 2010 6:32 AM PDT up reply actions

If there’s one school added, it will be Houston, their stats would greatly boost the MWCs, more than Fresno, and they’re a big Texas school, equivalent to a big Cali-school.

If there’s three schools added, to take us to twelve, Fresno will likely be #2. I have no idea who the #3 team would be though, color me unimpressed with Nevada’s resume. Nice to have a rival for UNLV, but I don’t think that’s a pressing concern.

I understand all the pluses Houston brings.

BUT do they really fit? Is geography a question here? Are they close enough to TCU to be a good working pair/travel partner? (seriously asking)

Houston is pretty far (Texas is huge) but there is a whole lot of history between TCU and Houston, since they were both SWC members. TCU has also had a satisfying on-again off-again home and home series with the Cougs recently, so there’s some fresh hate flowing around as well. They don’t fit in the sense that there aren’t really any mountains around Houston, but Fort Worth isn’t known for its rocky outcroppings either.

And they hate Tech, SMU and Rice almost as much as we do. Sharing hatred brings everyone together.

Not surprised...

But I really dislike Utah now. First they steal Boise State’s BCS bids in 2004 and 2008 and now they get into the PAC-10 because their academics our better than Boise State.

Yup...they're gone

I was afraid this would be the case. Utah has lusted after the Pac-xx for a while now. (And they are a good fit, academically.) But, as others have said, this is either a wash (trading Utah for Boise State), or we come out slightly ahead. I had thought that TCU and Utah we’re building a nice little rivalry. But, again, with Boise State coming in, it’s pretty much a wash there too. We may be done with moving around for now, but I’d like to see us invite Houston into the MWC. They’ve been ranked (during the season) and have been to a couple of bowl games the last couple of years. I’d like another Texas team, too. We’ll see, I guess.

by SammyOBrien on Jun 14, 2010 8:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Nope

They will never pay Utah that much and besides, Utah has wanted to be in the PAC-10 for 40 years. This is a long-term dream come true. BSU fans should quit grousing.

Utah is an academic institution first, the PAC-10 is the only conference in the area that has this reputation.

Utah has always desired more games with the big boys on the west coast, as scheduling increases of same the last 20 years demonstrates.

BSU grousing about Utah leaving for the PAC-10 is like saying that BSU should be saddled with Idaho and San Jose for life “because we want them to be so there.”

I love boise, I was born there, but Boise fans have a nearly childish chip on their shoulder. They should never have joined the MWC becuase now they won’t have that chip to motivate them and to feel sorry for themselves over. I pulled for Boise all my life, but seeing BSU fans stab at us and whine about us after their own dream just came true?

Makes me want to puke.

Gte over yourselves Boise fans, or go back to the kiddie pool and rule that roost. Boise would kill their mother to get into the PAC-10, they would care who they burned or spit on to do it. Yet Utah, who has wanted this for decades, is supposed to stay in the MWC and hold your hands so you guys feel better about things?

Hypocrites.

Not sure where you're getting this from...

Not a single post in this thread you are replying to is from a Boise State fan. And it isn’t arrogance driving the posts of BSU fans elsewhere, it is fear.

There is a real, but very slim, chance that Boise State just traded sideways for a conference that could potentially lose TCU, BYU and Utah. Utah going makes things more nerve-wracking because 1/3rd of the MWC current top tier is gone. Combine this with a Big XII that is no longer at 12 schools and there is some rightful concern about the potential fate of BYU and TCU.

I don’t think BYU and TCU are going anywhere. But I don’t really know for sure and nobody does. Uncertainty sucks.

This isn’t about hypocrisy, this is about survival. And if BSU fans let their fear show, none of them truly expect nor demand that Utah would turn down the Pac-Whatever. They’d just much prefer if you stayed in the MWC, which is exactly what you’d expect from a team looking to play in the best conference possible. Which is exactly what Utah is doing.

Yup, BSU fans have a massive chip on their shoulders and a persecution complex. Utah fans have one, too. And rightfully so. I think Utah was the best team in the country in 2008. I tried to start a campaign to cut our first BCS NCG Trophy, should we ever get one, in half, sending one half to the University of Utah in honor of your awesome 2008 season. I still feel we should, should that day ever come, but my idea is not very popular amongst Boiseans. Still, you now have actual legitimate chances at NCGs, and that is awesome.

So, I can’t speak for all the Boise State fans, but this one wishes you well in your future endeavors. Kick the sweet bejeebus out of Oregon and Washington for us.

Hook a brother up Utah

Dear Utah,

Please do the Mountain West one last solid and delay your entrance into the Pac 11 until 2013. This way, the Mountain West still gets to use your record towards BCS qualifying status.

In return, the conference will promise to ratchet up its disdain towards BYU.

Deal?

by Smoove V on Jun 14, 2010 8:44 PM PDT reply actions

It will not matter...

Even with Utah the Mountain West will still not qualify for a automatic bid.

by BSU Guru on Jun 14, 2010 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

How do you figure?

Unless they change suddenly change the criteria, I thought the addition of Boise State made it near certainty.

by Smoove V on Jun 14, 2010 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions

A near certainty...

But not a done deal. The Mountain West needs to be in the top six in all three categories and in the one with the average conference ranking it is a distant seventh. Their average conference ranking, according to this article,, is 59.9 while the Big 10 is sixth with 50.8. Boise State moving to the Mountain West is supposed to bring that ranking to about 53, still in seventh. But who knows because their is still 2 years left for the rankings to be counted.

Would work since ACC will keep bid theit since they have a contract with orange bowl and not from qualifying through set criteria.

Houston TV station

Of course he was saying that...

But I fail to see why the Big 12 would need TCU or Houston, they already have the Texas market completely locked up.

by BSU Guru on Jun 14, 2010 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah...

but, as a legislator, why would n’t you want to push other Texas schools to get a piece of the Big 12 pie as opposed to letting it go to BYU, Air Force, Memphis, or Arkansas.

I’d put money on BYU and Houston. That’d be my guess.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Jun 14, 2010 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It won’t happen. Unlike the “left behind” scenario for Tech and Baylor, there’s no pressure from the government to push Houston and TCU, especially since TCU is small and private. Texas and A&M have made it abundantly clear they want no part of us.

by HawkeyedFrog on Jun 14, 2010 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

TCU may have had a chance...

but after those not wanting Baylor in the MWC comments, well, I’m sure Baylor’s getting last laugh now….as wrong as that seems.

No, we never had a chance. Texas made it clear in several reports they weren’t interested in TCU, and claiming Baylor has any influence in that conference at all is ridiculous. They’re a member because of Ann Richards and not even their Big 12 buddies like them.

by HawkeyedFrog on Jun 14, 2010 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed - Big XII will NOT add anyone else - Remember: It's All About the Money

Adding any other team would mean splitting TV revenue. I doubt any remaining team with its market would be worth at least $17M per year.

This is so far ot hell and gone an upgrade for Boise, they should smile, nod and say “we understand brother, good going!”

Good riddance

If Utah wants to run out on the MWC after all it’s rhetoric in the news about how unfair the BCS is, then to turn around and jump at the first chance it gets to enter a so called BCS conference tells us all we need to know about their program and what they stand for. The MWC is on the cusp of AQ status and now of all times Utah is going to bail? Good, I hope they leave. We don’t need you, and we’ll continue to progress until we get that AQ bid.

Even if Utah goes to the Pac-10. Playoff football would be AWESOME!!

Bright Side

At least now we won’t have to change the upcoming games with Utah, and when we smack them down again it will be a win over a PAC (something) team.

Since it’s become quite clear from several reports that Texas and Oklahoma didn’t like the Championship game, it seems more likely to me that the Big 12 will remain with 10 teams, leaving BYU and Air Force to continue to be buddies with us. This fact is further supported by the insane length of the TV contract that has been signed to save the conference. If the Big 12 were adding teams, they would want a better TV deal, and there is no room for negotiation anytime soon with the Fox deal running for 18 years.

The Big 10 will have a championship game and 12 members, the Big 12 will not, and the ball will be back in the MWC’s court to gain the members needed for a BCS nod. Houston now, possibly SMU later if they manage to pull together a few bowl trips to not drag down our numbers. Things are going to be very interesting these next few years.

Off the field, anyway. On the field, I’m hoping for exceedingly boring TCU 12-0 seasons. A frog can dream, anyway.

Planning on taking a vacation during your bowl game again? I was hoping TCU got that out of their system.

The way I see it, we’ve both tagged eachother for 12-1 the past two seasons, so you should be planning on seeing the fabulous Las Vegas bowl yourselves a time or two.

Yep

I’m betting it will be TCU an Boise state with the odd stumble making BYU #2 a few times.

I look forward to this...

You Boise folk are all so eager, it gets me hyped for 2011, even with this year still to be played.
That said, barring a surprise title game, I really would rather not see you in a bowl again this year. I mean, enough is enough.

by HawkeyedFrog on Jun 15, 2010 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Our first game is a doozy.

As is your OOC schedule. The BCS bid this year could comically come down to who beats up on QB-less Oregon State more. You just might get this wish. And if you run the table and we don’t, I’ll be a TCU fan for one day in January.

But Rose Bowl trophies are really pretty. We want one. That crystal football thing looks pretty nice, too, but I doubt we’ll get one of those.

by Spyder Mayhem on Jun 15, 2010 8:11 AM PDT up reply actions

We both have the benefit of quite high rankings to start off with this time, though. I find it hard to see two BCS league teams running the table, so if it’s going to happen, this is a great year for it.

Interesting thought

What if both Boise and TCU ran the table and no BCS conference had an undefeated team… A rematch of the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, this time for the National Championship.

Yeah...

I really don’t want to play TCU for the third consecutive year in a bowl game.

pray that houston can go undefeated and maybe three non aq teams make a bcs bowl game

houstons offense will be off the hook. case keenum and 8 others are back from last year. the defense has 7 back and can only get better. plus they do have a cg and could go 13-0. plus houston has three aq bcs teams on schedule. i think it’s ucla, miss. state and texas tech. it would be very unlikely all three go undefeated but at least somebody gets to play someone different if it did happen.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Craig Thompson just might end up being a savvy guy. Hell is just a word, the reality is much much worse." Event Horizon". Now remember, when things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean, I mean plumb, mad dog mean. cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live or win. That's just the way it is. "The Outlaw Josey Wales". To protect the sheep you gotta catch the wolf, and it takes a wolf to catch a wolf. "Training Day". Rashad will beat Rua b/c it's a bad matchup for him. 2/1 odds. Josh Koscheck will dethrone Gsp and win the welterweight title. 2.9/1 odds on that too. Peace.

But if its for the BCS title

All is thrown out the window.

I agree, Guru.

Boise’s not my first choice for a bowl partner…again. But I also agree with Jeremy. If it’s for the BCS title, I’d get past the tedium of facing the Broncos in the post season for the third straight year!
