BREAKING NEWS: Boise State Joining Mountain West
This is coming from ESPN's guru Joe Schad, but all I can say ITS ABOUT TIME! Another domino has fallen in the off season of expansion. Glad to see the Mountain West beng proactive for once.
Here is the release from the Mountain West Conference
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference announced today that Boise State University has accepted an invitation to join the MWC as its 10th member institution, effective July 1, 2011.
"We are pleased and excited to welcome Boise State University to the Mountain West Conference," said Commissioner Craig Thompson. "Since our inception just 11 short years ago, the Mountain West has experienced tremendous success, and the addition of Boise State will further enhance that strength. The MWC continues to strategize regarding potential membership scenarios and bringing Boise State into the Conference is an important part of that evolution."
"The invitation to join the Mountain West Conference reflects the excellence that Boise State University has demonstrated academically and athletically," said Boise State President Robert Kustra. "It will be a privilege to compete and partner with such a successful group of member institutions. This move is in the best interests of Boise State's future, and the university is excited to be part of one of the nation's most outstanding conferences."
Live press conference at noon mountain time on The Mtn.

I'm excited for what it will mean for the conference
and hoping that it will raise the talent level all around. Let’s hope steel sharpens steel. I know my boys at CSU will struggle to beat them for a few years, but hopefully it brings out the best in us.
I suppose once the Big East started talking to Kansas, K-State, Iowa State and Mizzou last night there wan’t too much more of a point holding our breath in anticipation.
It’s funny that at the beginning of this expansion chatter the Big East was written off as dead-man-walking, yet they might come out of this stronger in both football and their beloved basketball.
Makes me sick, really.
A Big East with those teams in it would just feel weird
but you’re probably right that they’ll more likely choose to join them rather than the MWC
Some tweets on invites and “conversations” between the Big East and the Big Leftovers have been fanshotted over at Cyclone Fanatic.

Wow, forgot to congratulate Boise and welcome them aboard.
We at TCU do plan on beating you soundly though, make no mistake about that.
Welcome!

And we at UNLV
will try to make your visit as pleasurable as possible, although Sam Boyd Stadium sucks. But we probably just roll over for you year after year… lol
UNLV is going all the way this year!
And the folks on Montezuma Mesa
will be too hammered and/or indifferent to show up, so it will be just like another home game for Boise St.
“Win or Lose, Aztecs always booze”
who knows
but remember they are a 16 team hoops league, so not sure if they want a 20 team league so unless they kick out some FCS football or non-football schools not sure what expansion they will do.

They may try to cut ties with ND in non-football sports to satisfy the Big 10, re-snag Temple and move up one of their Basketball powers (Villanova?) to D-I to get to 12 football schools.
These are interesting times we live in.

YES!!!! This is better than a unicorn!
About damn time! Now everyone just has to hope the MWC doesn’t get poached up the fart box.

Good news
Still wondering why now when they said they would wait.
possibility #1: MWC wanted Colorado most but took Boise State after Colorado was off the table
possibility #2: MWC knows they will be losing a team such as Utah and wanted to bolster their league before anyone leaves
possibility #3 The Big isn’t breaking up
possibility #4 MWC wanted to make league more attractive to Big 12 refugees
possibility #5 they figured tehy would invite Boise State anyways, so why not now?
Still not sure why, maybe we’ll find out in the teleconference at noon

1 and 4 seem likely. I think that unless Texas and A&M manage to solve the “Tech problem” and get to the Big 10, Utah will be the Mizzou of the MWC, waiting for an invite that may never come. On the other hand, if the Tech problem is solved and Utah does jump ship to the Pac, we’ll have a whole new world of possibilities. I think trading Tech for Utah isn’t a bad deal…

I'd say #1
Despite what they believe, CU is a Mountain West team not a Pac-1X team. I have a feeling they’re going to be the new WSU in the Pac-1X
Without a doubt, adding Boise St makes the conference stronger. Now what I don’t know is if they invited Boise St to deter other members from defecting, or to become a more attractive landing spot for Big 12 castoffs. Maybe its both.
We shall see.
