The Mountain West Basketball Tournament will Shoot and Score

96908096

There might be a number of College Basketball Tournaments to watch this week but don't overlook the Mountain West which should be one of the top on everyone's list. Yes, the same Mountain West who has splashed into College Football polls and governed meetings of the minds in Washington over the B.C.S.

The Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas, NV is always one of the bright spots of the Championships.

Four solid teams sit above the Mountain West. Included is top seeded and 8th in the AP Poll New Mexico Lobo's. The 14th ranked BYU Cougars, the Nevada Las Vegas Running Rebels who are still receiving votes in the ESPN coaches' poll, and for the second straight year, on the bubble, the San Diego St. Aztecs.

If you haven't followed the Mountain this year you have been missing out on some amazing and down to the wire games. The top ranked Lobo's have swept the series from BYU this year but lost to the Running Rebels in the Pit in New Mexico but then beat the Rebels on their own home floor.

They also needed over time to beat San Diego St. in New Mexico and lost to the Aztecs on their home floor.

The BYU Cougars were demolished by UNLV at the Thomas and Mack and barely beat the Rebels in the first Mountain West game of the year. They were swept by the Lobo's and then swept the Aztecs.

The UNLV Running Rebels have showed that they belong right there with New Mexico and BYU but were swept by Utah, who they are playing in the first round of the tournament.

There isn't much doubt that the three top teams in the Mountain West will be in the tournament. It is even a possibility that New Mexico by winning the Mountain West Tourney could collect a #2 seed. BYU has a strong resume and is a lock for the tournament but a first round loss by UNLV to Utah could push UNLV to a bubble team.

For now San Diego St. is one of the last few teams in the tournament and need to handle Colorado St. and meet with New Mexico in the second round to secure a spot.

For teams like San Diego St. and UNLV they don't want to leave anything up to anyone. The Mountain West Champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Imagine the chaos that could happen if a Utah or Colorado St. team some how manages to get hot.

We have seen it before here in Las Vegas as a team could start a run and wind up in the NCAA Tournament.

In my mind there are four tourney bound teams here in the Mountain West. While some may say there is no way that four teams come out of this conference take a look at some of the other powerhouse conferences and I'll take my four against your four any day.

No matter what there will be some excellent basketball played in Las Vegas from Thursday to Saturday. Potential match ups of San Diego St vs New Mexico and BYU vs UNLV on Friday are two of the best games anyone can ask for not just in the Mountain but in College Basketball.

the mwc is getting alot of publicity lately for football and basketball.

even some of our baseball teams are doing well. i just hope that the 3 or 4 teams we get into the ncaa tourney beat some east coast schools. i want the east coast media to report the mwc can play and beat the east coast teams.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. I was building a house, I don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. Bang. "Unforgiven" I drink your milkshake. I drink it up! "There Will BE Blood"
