Where does the MWC rank as a College Football Conference?

*WARNING* This is a mostly opinonated article and should not be looked at as complete fact.

5th, the MWC is ranked 5th in my books. They are ahead of the Big East and ACC and closely following the Pac-10, who is losing status by the second. The order of the top 7 conferences is as follows:

1. SEC

2. Big 10

3. Big 12

4. Pac-10

5. MWC

6. ACC

7. Big East

This list is based on last year's performances and not predictions for the coming years. Some may ask why I would rank the MWC ahead of the ACC and Big East but behind the Pac-10?

Star-divide

The MWC has a better top 3 than both the ACC and Big East, and also has better mid-conference teams and bottom of the barrel teams. It isn't much of an argument over whether or not the ACC or Big East is better than the MWC because of competition and overall bowl history. The MWC went 4-1 in their bowl games last season, all of which did not come against teams of the quality of the Sun Belt... Wyoming defeated Fresno St. in dramatic fashion, Air Force beat down Houston, a team I'm sure anyone wouldn't have had an issue with facing. BYU destroyed Oregon St. in Vegas, Utah defeated Cal a formidable foe from the Pac-10. The only dissapointment was TCU losing to Boise St. 17-10 in the Tostito's Fiesta Bowl.

The reason the MWC is not far behind the Pac-10 is not only because of the way schedules, recruiting and coaching level is going up for the MWC, but also that the Pac-10 is losing momentum (USC penalties, Oregon losing Jeremiah Masoli, their basketball head coach and their AD). The Pac-10 is definitely going to have down year this year compared to their past years because of the way this offseason has gone for them. Next season Air Force should move up into that 10 win category, Wyoming into the 8 or 9 win category, bringing the conference's competition alot farther up. Now that also means that we're probably not going to see for a third straight year an MWC team run the table, but it does mean that we possibly could get 4 teams in top 25 next season if Wyoming or Air Force can knock off a couple of ranked teams. Pac-10 will not be as great a football conference as it has been in the past, not only because of off-season issues, but because of the talent their teams lost. So many of the top teams lost talent to the NFL, now granted they are taking in some talent too but they will not have the same kind of experience they need to make an immediate impact in CFB.

In the coming years both conferences will become better by through expansion, growth in talent, and scheduling, but the MWC has more room to improve. The Pac-10 already is having teams regularly in the top 10 without them having to run the table like MWC teams do in order to be in top 10, but with expansion rumors coming for the MWC and Pac-10 that could change for the MWC. The MWC is talking about adding Boise St, Fresno St, and Houston/UNR. If the MWC adds them it becomes a conference very similar to the Pac-10. Pac-10 has Utah, Colorado, Texas (yes Texas), and BYU in the discussion for expansion. The difference with Pac-10 expansion from MWC expansion is that if the MWC invites their teams, it is practically for sure unless it violates something with the NCAA, with the Pac-10 not all of those teams would jump in an instant if they were invited. Pac-10 should not expand very soon if the MWC expands first. Now what does all this have to do with where the MWC ranks? Basically, if MWC expands before the Pac-10 expands, than the MWC should pass the Pac-10 for the 4th best conference.

Now given all this information, anything can happen. TCU could have Andy Dalton do what Masoli did and really hurt the MWC, Pac-10 could have a down year the way they did in basketball this year. Big 12 could get poached by Big 10 or Pac-10 expansion. Anything can happen and this is basically just stating theories and ideas. Under the current conditions (no expansion) the MWC would be better next season, and Pac-10 would recover the position the season after. Of course the Big East could expand and change up ideas. Most other conferences aren't even part of this discussion for a reason... Hopefully this sheds some light on what the true standings currently are.

FYI...BYU is absolutely not in consideration for Pac-10 expansion...

I could see the MWC passing up the P-10 this year as it looks like a few teams are rebuilding. I do think most will be improved, but I’m somewhat of a realist in that not all teams will live up to expectations. I’ll never admit it if they were, but I could see it happening.

BYU will be a bit down after losing some leadership, but should still get to 9, and Utah and TCU should both get to 10 at least. I think that’s where the top 25 teams end again. Maybe AF sneaks in.

However, I do not think Air Force reaches 10 wins. Looking at their schedule I see 8 winable, with Wyoming and the other service acadamies being on the list. None of those are guaranteed. I would call 8 a rousing success with the schedule they have. It’s not terribly easy, but it’s certainly

As for Wyoming I only see 6 winable. USU, Toledo should be fairly easy. They get Utah at home, but I don’t see that as winable. TCU, BYU and Air Force on the road should be out of reach.

You’re right that the MWC is on the way up, but I contest that the Pac-10 is on the way down. Maybe for one year, but realistically all programs except WSU and ASU have coaches firmly in place and have started down the path towards winning again. I think Oregon will suprise people, and I hate them more than anybody. USC will be back to normal and UW, UCLA, CAL, Stanford, OSU and UA should all go bowling.

I guess you're right

I still just see any conference having a hard time taking them for anything with the no games on Sunday angle. I think they’re content staying right where they’re at.

Fact or opinion?

Because if there’s one team that has consistently been in Pac 10 talks over the last 25 years it’s been BYU. Only the last decade has Utah climbed into the discussion.

by vaughnzipper on Mar 22, 2010 7:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Well...opinionated fact

Larry Scott (Pac-10 Commish) said something to the effect of “We’d look at schools that mesh culturally”.

BYU doesn’t schedule games on Sunday. That alone could be a deal breaker. More importantly, they’re not a tier-1 research university. While they have an outstanding undergrad program, they don’t get research dollars and they don’t offer a graduate school. The Pac-10 is real snooty in that sense.

Colorado/Utah or Texas/TAMU are the only combos that make sense at this point that fill the 3 needs.

1. Bring new media markets to the conference. It’s where we’ll make money if/when a Pac-10 network is started, also when our TV contracts are up in 2012.
2. Must fit academically. Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA and UW are all ranked among the top 50 schools in the country. Our lowest if I remember is still in the top 100. They’ll want to keep that image, UU/CU/UT all fit that mold. TAMU would be accepted because of the HUGE amount of money Texas brings in (as they would be a package deal).
3. BYU sucks.

So clearly, they fit in none of the above. Well, they fulfill need #1, but Utah fills #1, #2 and #3. There has been about 500 articles on this from the Pac-10 blogs since Scott mentioned it a month or two ago.

I’ve heard everything from adding BSU and Gonzaga for FB and BB respectively, to adding SDSU and the Nevada schools. None of it makes sense. This is all driven by money and only Colorado/Utah or Texas/TAMU would increase the revenue of all schools. It’s still not for sure that the Colorado/Utah pairing would even do that.

I stand corrected on one point

TAMU is a tier-1 school. In fact one of the best. I confused them.

both ways

number is a great jab. BYU was close awhile back and I think it had to do with them being a more viable choice then Utah at the time and they were willing to accommodate BYU. However, Utah has not emerged as a better football program with 2 BCS wins and they fit the Pac-10 mold better that is why Utah is a choice ahead of BYU now.

by Jeremy Mauss on Mar 22, 2010 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

They still have better faciliites and probably a bigger fan base

and I’ve heard the argument that there would be a nationwide LDS following. But all the Pac-10 wants is to get a team in the SLC market. It’s #31 in the country and getting a team in there means negotiating power when TV contract time rolls around. Utah gets that done, and without the cultural clash that could arise with BYU. It’s why SDSU (#17 media market) and BSU (#100) are not options. They won’t increase the size of the pie enough to give each team a bigger slice.

I agree though, 20 years ago BYU would have been the better choice simply because Utah could not compete

The Big East is now 1-3 so far - Greg Gumble

by B Money on Mar 22, 2010 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

LDS fans

There would be a bump from the BYU fan base but not enough to make them a must have. That effect comes from traveling to road and bowl games. There are lot in California but getting the SLC market is more key then the possibility of an extra 100-200k fans watching each week and that is the high end.

by Jeremy Mauss on Mar 22, 2010 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions

You do realize that SL County only has a population of 1mil right?

And I would bet that over 60% are BYU fans. BYU holds a much bigger market here… oh and then you’d get another 500k in Utah County. Silly me, I also forgot that BYU students actually leave the state of Utah so we actually have fans across the country, especially in the West and specifically in California.

BYU does have better facilities, better market, and better programs.

by vaughnzipper on Mar 23, 2010 6:44 AM PDT up reply actions

That doesn't matter

The Pac-10 doesn’t care who people root for. They just want a team in that market so they can use the TV’s in the market as bargaining chips in TV negotaions. Utah doesn’t come with the cultural clash, or Sunday work around.

Same thing with Colorado, they don’t want CU, they want Denver and all the TV’s in the area.

by B Money on Mar 23, 2010 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

it was an educated guess

But I also was referring to outside the schools foot print which could be up to an extra 500k eyeballs, but that is hard to quantify for tv deals if they were to be in the Pac-10.

BYU does have better facilities, better market, and better programs.

Really?? I dont doubt BYU has good facilities but not better then the Pac-10 maybe some but maybe two or three.

But didnt Utah have an indoor facility before BYU?? I know the stadium BYU’s is better since they have been able to sell out more with about 25 to 30k more of seats.

historcially BYU is a better team. Over the last 5-7 years it’s been Utah.

Honestly though, BYU does have better facilities, a bigger stadium and a bigger (main team) following. I like Utah better, but that’s not disputable.

bigger stadium does not mean better. you should know that bmoney

husky stadium is twice as beautiful as the rose bowl and the colosieum. rice-eccles has less seats but they had the 2002 olympic ceromony’s there and you can see two mtn ranges with over 10,000 peaks if you got the right seats. since we are talking about this generation it still is 2 bcs wins for utah and none for byu and their quest for perfection was a complete failure. be careful being nice to byu. they just might beat your beloved huskie this coming season.

correct

Historically it is BYU, and Utah this past decade. I think Utah has hit the jump to consistently be a top 25 team, they had 10 wins this past year in a rebuilding mode with two QBs who were inexperienced at the FBS level.

BYU is rebuilding some what with a new QB and will be perceived like Utah last year where they could win 8-10 games. I think that will be the case and they will be not quite as good as last year.

Oh the Sunday issue again

NON ISSUE here folks! It is a very minor adjustment and one that has little to know weight in this equation. BYU has played the PAC 10 in just about every sport and they didn’t have to do it on a Sunday.

1.) BYU brings in about twice as much media as Utah does. Not only would they hold the majority in SLC over Utah but they have a nationwide following which can not be ignored. I’m from SoCal and I know how easy it is for about a 1/3 of the Rose Bowl to be filled with BYU fans… Utah can’t do that.

2.) Must fit academically huh? Well according to US News BYU ranks ahead of both Oregon schools, WSU (don’t even get me started on Pullman either), and both Arizona schools… that’s half the Pac 10 if you were counting correctly. Oh and not to mention that they rank far superior to Utah.

3.) Tell that to your HC Sarkisian. You guys are still bitter about that huh? It’s not like that was the turning point for your season.

I do agree with you on Utah fulfilling #3… they do suck.

by vaughnzipper on Mar 23, 2010 6:37 AM PDT up reply actions

The Sunday thing is an issue...

the idea that the whole conference has to work around one programs schedule is absurd, it won’t happen and one of the reasons BYU is already out.

Like I said, they have a fine undergrad program. One of the best. But they’re not a tier-1 research university. All the Pac-10 schools are, along with CU and Utah.

You’re missing the point here…I’m not ragging on BYU. I have many LDS family members and know a few friends who attended.

The point is that Utah doesn’t have a religious affiliation. With Utah, you get the all the benefits the Pac-10 wants, without all the red tape to work around.

And yes…I’m still bitter about the call.

by B Money on Mar 23, 2010 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually not entirely true

I did a write up about the Sunday game situation and the Big XII does fit. Here is the link. Only 3 sports play Sundays for finals with tennis, golf, and baseball. Those could be moved to accommodate BYU and since minor sports not really a big deal.

by Jeremy Mauss on Mar 22, 2010 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it's the unwillingness that might hurt them

not the actually act of playing on Sunday’s. At least with the Pac-10, you’re either in or you’re out. Scott seems like a no nonsense kind of commish, and I just don’t think there is a place for BYU in the Pac-10 anymore.

I didn’t even take the Big-12 into consideration though. They, along with the SEC will absolutely take a program for purely athletic reasons.

Pac-10

had way too many Sunday games to make it work. Pac-10 is picky in how they work, and unless BYU was the only chance at 12 teams they will not be invited.

we have been better than the pac-ten for two years and the head to head matchups are in

our favor. with usc going down in flames in 2 to 3 weeks and the problems at oregon the pac=ten this coming season will be the 7th best conference. or better stated 5th from the bottom. with the improvement of sdsu, air force and wyoming we will have some middle of the pack teams who are good. i will also say that either utah or tcu will go undefeated. 50/50.

Id say 6th over the past 3 years

But yes in general the MWC is 7th in football. They are much closer to the Big Six leagues then the rest and on good years are as good or better then some (mostly the Big East). MWC is in between, but perhaps is if Wyoming can improve then the league will have 5 legit teams who can win 8 games a year.

Agreed

I voted 6th but 7th was close. At the bottom we really are not as good. You can say UW went 0-12 but this year my Rammies couldn’t beat anyone in conference. The depth needs to get a lot better to bump them up. I think it is happening though, ask this question in 2-3 years and it could be a totally different answer.

So will it be 35-10 or 31-17

I guess I should argue with you more because apparently the more I do the lower the score gets for the Utes and the higher the score gets for the Cougs.

When’s the last time Asiata did anything? I’m waiting…… and waiting…… and waiting. The dude’s injury prone! There’s a reason why he’s back for a 6th year!

Reed, Key, Joppru, and Beadles all gone. You return 0 starting LB’s, 1 defensive lineman, and you’re starting a freshman and another newbie at the safety positions (hahahaha). And you’re taking that crap up against a BYU front line that returns all 5 starters, the best RB in the conference (and 2-3 others who saw significant time last year), and 2 starting WR’s. Odds are against you my friend.

easiest position to fill are defensive positons.

it starts with qb. which utah has two with ncaa experience. you have riley nelson with mop up duty. advantage utes. we go four deep at rb although i’m sure one or two of them will be used in a different capacity. you have harvey unga. who wont even make it thru the fsu and washington husky games injuries do happen like you said. advantage utah.our offensive line returns 4 of 5. your does not. advantage utah. yes a little thin at wr but that is another position utah has found playmakers. pitta gone. tie. defense, you might return more starters but i expect great things from the younger kruger’s brother and again coach whitt finds defensive gems all the time. overall utah will beat byu easily. btw mr. mauss vaugnzipper put down the military branch i was in for 4 years. do we really need someone here who is against are military. it’s on this very thread. peace.

not sure about the Utah defense

The defense should be fine and Whitt finds his guys and will work hard on the defense. The defense will be a work but overall I see Utah at 10 wins again.

If you have to convert a QB to an LB you know you have problems

Whitt is shaking in his boots this off-season. He has no idea what to do and it will show the first week when you all face Pitt.

that is b/c utah has three other qb's zipper.

So you're saying that BYU can recruit 20 QB's and because they're QB's they can switch into other roles and play just as well?

I think you need to process what you’re going to say ebfore you post because you’re clearly missing the point.

by vaughnzipper on Mar 24, 2010 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

absolutely the guy who scouts ninth graders on your blog

can sure pick them out. i would expect that ninth grader to be a lb for byu. lmao!

Really offense??

They do lose their top 3 or 3 WR that will hurt, but the Utes went 7 deep at WR and have those guys have experience. Also, to think Harvey Unga will dominate a game? He is capable of doing that however Rober Anae wants to be balanced on offense and he does that to a fault, or he sometimes will abandon the run for long stretches. If they let Harvey loose for 25 carries a game yes he can take over, but that is not what BYU does. Plus, consider a rebuilt offensive line.

by Jeremy Mauss on Mar 24, 2010 7:26 AM PDT up reply actions

We return our entire O-line

The best thing that happened to BYU this offseason was that Unga decided to return. Think about it, if Heaps gets the nod there is no way Bronco allows him to throw 35+ a game like he did with Hall, which means the run will be called on to carry the load a bit more. If Nelson gets the nod then we go back to the Doman/Stailey days and we will be a “run first” program. Plus this will be a down year for defenses in the MWC with TCU and Utah losing just about everybody. I know it sounds odd but BYU could be one of the best D’s this next year.

My prediction is either way Unga breaks 1600 yards and 20 TD’s. Pre-season MWC POY.

by vaughnzipper on Mar 24, 2010 7:52 AM PDT up reply actions

unga will be lucky to make it out of the ooc schedule with 35 carries a game.

you don’t know jack about college football. again this man put down the us military mr. mauss on this very thread. i did my four years in the airforce at comiso air station sicily italy and mccord air force base. do we really need this?

FYI

Unga rushed for 1100 yards last year and he was out for 2 games. You have no idea how small you make your brain look.

by vaughnzipper on Mar 24, 2010 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

you don't now how stupid you will look when unga carries the ball 35

times a game and i guarantee if he does that he gets injured. there goes your season zipper.

defensive position are the easiest to field. it's the qb, the skills position and the o-line that is more important.

we beat you in every sense of the word on offense. i guarantee byu will not win 9 games including bowl game 8-5 at best. utah will win at least 10 games. plus were going to win three more vs aq bcs conferences to make it to a nations best 22 wins vs aq bcs teams. byu will be stuck on 15. i feel your pain zipper. lol.

who is the more experienced qb. riley n? he did mop up duty.lol.

utah has more running backs and both eddie wide and asiata are better than unga. go back to that byu blog where nobody goes. you know jack zhit.

You do know Nelson played a year at USU, and some last year

Utah can have more RB’s (I don’t care to look up if that’s even true) but BYU has the best in Unga (If you think he’s not the best than you are the worst gambling man I’ve ever met) with Kariya, DiLuigi, and Quezada coming in (you Utes are still bitter about him picking BYU).

Wolf, you’re not worth my time anymore. I made a mistake when I tried to do you a favor by sharing some common knowledge and all you do is show us all why at 34 and single it’s not healthy to still be living in your parents basement.

harvey unga will save the day. lmao. he will probably be injured before the game even happens.

he will have the entire workload on his back. maybe even the husky defense will be too much for him. i actually feel sorry for the guy. should have went pro and now his stock will drop b/c i’ll give it 50/50 he gets injured along the way. injuries do happen alot in college football. peace to v.z. and let it begin with me. i only did 4 years in the military too and i was stationed at comiso air station in sicily italy.
