MWC Tourney Picks

Hey everyone,

I wanted to get a feel for what you all see for the MWC teams in the tournament. Mine has a fair amount of MWC bias going on here. Here are my picks:

UNM- I have the Lobos making a statement vs. Montana. We win big for the first time in a while, and it feels grand. Lobos go on to win a nailbiter in the second round against Washington, before losing by 15 to WV. UNM gets it's first sweet 16 appearance, and announces its arrival to the rest of the country for the next few years.

BYU- I have BYU handling Florida in classic BYU fashion. Florida has lost 4 of its last 5. This will be easy prey for the Cougs. It stays close in the first half, then Fredette stops playing around and drops 20+ in the second half in a near-blowout. They use the momentum of the first round to shock Kansas St. before losing to Pitt in the Sweet 16.

UNLV- After losing on their homecourt in the MWC tournament championship, the Rebs look to prove they are better than that against UNI. In a matchup that pits two of the nation's best defenses, this one will be a low scoring affair with UNLV prevailing in the end. After a good showing, they go out to my tournament champ, Kansas.

SDSU- The team that got hot at the end of the year and won the MWC tournament is peaking at the right time. They will be too athletic and too dominant inside for Tennessee. Chalk up another win for the MWC. Their run ends in the next round, however, when the Hoyas kick them out.

So there you have it. I have all MWC teams winning in the first round, with 2 going to the Sweet 16. Who does everyone else have?

I think all four can win and 3 should for sure. Sweet 16 is UNM and maybe BYU or possibly SDSU.

How much national recognition do you think the MWC would get if UNLV beat Kansas in the second round?

None...unless they go to the final four.

The press will be all about what Kansas didn’t do.

I’m not trying to be an ass; I just really think this is what would happen. The only reason we got 4 teams in was because that is what had to happen given the scenario. The conference tourney player out ideally. I bet the selection committee would have found a way to leave SDSU out had UNLV won.

As a UW homer, I have them beating UNM in the 2nd round.

But I like BYU to beat UF and give KSU a good game at the very least. Maybe the most underrated team in the tourney, with a good draw to boot.

I also like UNLV to stomp up on a mostly untested UNI squad (loss to Depaul…really? I guess Marquette did it too though). They’ll go down in the 2nd.

SDSU vs. UT is an enigma to me. Tennessee looks like world beaters one week and scrubs the next. I think UT will pull it out, but only because I think they’ll get hot. Just a hunch and nothing else.

Question

ChiLobo, how are you going to watch the UNM game tonight? I assume they are not showing it in Chicago. Do you have a good site from which to stream? (Anyone else have a good idea?)
