Mountain West Basketball Power Poll: 2/8/2010
There is a new team at the top of the weekly MWC power poll. BYU has now lost to New Mexico and UNLV in consecutive weeks, while the Rebels are 3-1 against San Diego State, New Mexico and BYU. Had the Rebels not choked against Utah at home they would be riding an eight game winning streak.
There is a tie between TCU and Wyoming this week in the voting, but the big shake up is up top.

I'll remain a UNLV homer till the day I die, but seeing as they're 3-1 against the three other best teams in the conference, with only a slim loss at BYU, they get top billing. New Mexico did beat BYU at home, but I still think the Cougars even the score in Provo at the end of the month. These rankings could change a fair amount by next week given that UNLV hosts New Mexico on Wednesday and travels to San Diego State on Saturday.

Correction
I said they’re 4-1 against the top 3, but obviously that’s incorrect since BYU was their 4th game against that group.
One insane game by UNLV and one mediocre game from BYU
doesn’t seem to be enough to knock off BYU. Especially when played at UNLV.
UNLV hasn’t played like that since they won the NC. I’m not going to say it was a fluke, but I will say it wasn’t typical UNLV. Guaranteed we don’t see that same team again the rest of the season.
Not to mention that BYU's losses have come on the road at quality opponents
More than UNLV can say with losses at home to KSU, Utah, and a neutral site against Pac 10 mediocrity USC.
Say What?
Utah State is not exactly a “quality opponent” and UNLV losing to an extremely talented KSU team is nothing to be ashamed of.
Say what???
You ever heard of the spectrum? Don’t get
me wrong they are no KSU but the spectrum is a tough place to play. Not to mention that there a top 50 RPI team at 18-6.
FYI, I listed other teams than KSU… Losing to Utah at home is no excuse.

BYU
UNLV almost beat BYU up at Provo, so this was no fluke.

But with Jimmer playing at like 75%
Had he just hit his season average (21, which he exceeded at UNLV last week) BYU would have taken it by 18. You’ve got to play that as a major factor.
1-3 in this conference
you could rank the top 3 teams anywhere 1-3. one team doesn’t stand out really.
Watch out for the Lobos tomorrow
Darrington Hobson is coming into a zone! Realistically, If the Lobos stay calm/make a FT for once they can win…but UNLV most likely wins by 6+
Lobos Win in Vegas a warm up for the MWC Tournament
UNM is the hottest team going into the homestretch. They are 5 and 0 win playing against the top 25 teams in the country. If the win at BYU, watch out., Lobos RPI should easily move into the top ten. They continue to show up for the big games like nobody else. This team is special and only looks to get better next year. In the Pit or out the lobos are moving up. It is nice to see them have a great year with solid competition from UNLV, BYU & SDSU.

This is going to turn out to be a tangled mess
If somebody doesn’t win on the road against one of the others.
If we end up in a 3 way tie who gets the higher seed? Truly at this point BYU has the upper hand because their road tests are done. They didn’t do well but they are currently tied in the loss column and they play UNM and SDSU at home, except for @Utah which can be close. UNM goes to BYU and UNLV… my guess is they lose both. UNLV still goes to SDSU and has UNM at home as well. They probably go 2-0 but then again they couldn’t beat Utah at home so who knows???
My guess is if the road teams win out and BYU gets the tourney (fingers crossed) then they pull the 3 seed. If UNLV wins out and gets the tourney then they get a 4 seed. If UNM wins out (highly unlikely) and get the tourney they pull in a 4 seed as well.
I’m going to say the season shakes down like this:
-UNLV beats UNM but loses a close one to SDSU but wins the tourney and gets a 5 seed.
-UNM loses to BYU and UNLV and finishes 3rd in the tourney and gets an 8 seed.
-BYU wins out on the season but loses to UNLV in the tourney final pulling in a 4 seed. Keeping them in the West bracket… hello SLC!
The Rebels are a different team
than they were at the start of conference season against Utah. Chace Stanback and Matt Shaw have really found their touch and are definitely helping out Willis on the offensive end. The team at the beginning of conference season might have lost to Utah at home, but this is a different team
Rebel Rock
Lobos have the momentum
UNM beats UNLV….done
UNM beats BYU…to be done
SDSU wins MWC tournament
MWC has 4 teams in NCAA tournament
UNM has won all of their big games….BYU has not…UNLV has not…SDSU has not
UNM in final four!
