New Mexico @ BYU Highlights Mountain West Hoops All Day Open Thread
The biggie is New Mexico vs. BYU which could determine who heads West for the NCAA tournament which is huge for BYU since the regional is at Salt Lake. If you do happen to live in Salt Lake the Ute game is 70's night to celebrate the 40 years of teh Huntsman center.
The Colorado State game against TCU is huge for them if they want to make it to the NIT or the CBI.

UNLV up big
Not exactly shocking given that it’s Air Force. But a 32 point lead (66-34 with 7:30 to go) on the road anywhere is a good thing. I’m just glad UNLV isn’t letting bad teams hang around.
BYU-New Mexico
I don’t particularly care for the Lobos, but I always enjoy BYU losses.

Tavernari
He needs to quit his whining. It seems like there’s always one Cougar I really don’t like.
New Mexico free throws
BYU needs an amazing catch and shoot, but New Mexico has done everything they can at the free throw line to give this game to BYU.
Ugh
Can’t help but wonder what would have happened had Jimmer been able to play in the 2nd half. Oh well.
Great game, though. Even though UNM beat BYU twice, I think these teams are pretty evenly matched.
I think he would have played had they though he could be effective.
I doubt it was a minor tummy ache.
I don't think any of us can judge without really knowing exactly how he was feeling.
BYU has other good players. Having a subpar Jimmer may have hurt more than it would help.
Maybe it wasn't as bad when the game started and got worse.
I see no point in trying to draw conclusions or judge Jimmer when we don’t know all the circumstances. And who’s to say Jimmer wanted to try and it was the coaches that kept him out? We just don’t know.
That sentence was a bit unclear.
I meant to say, how do we know Jimmer didn’t want to try to play and it was the coaches/trainers who kept him out.
Oh well,
as a Lobo fan I don’t care, I don’t want him to be hurt, but I’m just excited the Lobos pulled it off.
Just you wait Lobos
The season match up opportunities aren’t over just yet.
Good win by the Lobos. Too bad JF wasn’t healthy for the 2nd time and BYU again almost pulled it off.

Odds on the excuse vaughnzipper uses to explain BYU loss:
2:1 – He ignores completely the BYU loss, and pulls out an obscure poll showing “proof” that BYU is better than UNM in a few days.
5:1 – Jimmer was sick. Why? VZ got a little excited before the game and gave him gonaherpesyphilaids at a Friday frat party. Not BYU or Jimmer’s fault.
15:1 – It was the refs fault. The Hobson rejection at the end of the game should have been a foul. (Despite the numerous times that the lobos were assaulted under the hoop without a call.
Any takers? Anyone else wanna put some odds on this one?
Whatever it takes for you Locos to beat a team
without their All-American in. Shoot, if I were a UNM fan I’d want the best of the other team. Nice to know you guys get the lucky breaks.
Besides, is it that hard to make wide open 3’s?

Real cute rockie
go find your boyfriend bullwinkle (Martinez) and celebrate. You oughta quit beating him, he’s fugly enough.
At least BYU comes out of this one knowing they have a coach with class. Alford wins and he still acts liek a puss. Slick Rick Steve Alford… the man, the myth, the douche.

I'm just saying
BYU was not effective because of Jimmer’s tummy ache. Hopefully UNM meets up with BYU for a rematch.
Right
Trying to save face.
BYU needs Jimmer for a few reasons.
1) It takes 2 defenders to stop him
2) You have to respect his ability to drive the lane
3) He averages 22 points a game
4) He’s a 90% FT shooter
Take those factors out and you’re bound to lose to a quality opponent.

BTW
How about that “a-hole” coach of yours? Surely he was talking about himself when he said that to JT.

Nice way to cover for the one who represents your team
I guess I’d have a lot of frustration built up if I had to live in Alequerqe. What a jack ass.

JT
was acting like a baby, he deserved to called an asshole. I wouldn’t talk your living in Mormon country.
SoCal?
Interesting. I love how you condone a coach that openly displays poor sportsmanship.

Looks like Alford picked up sportsmanship yips from Locksley during their "pillow talks"

Ah, the talk of a beaten man.
Dude, give it up. You lost. For all your big talk, your obscure stats, your JF man-crush, you lost. At least be a good sport about it. Maybe a “Nice job, Lobos. Hope we both do well in the NCAAs.” Or even nothing at all. But you just continue to run your mouth.
Dude
I don’t know you personally, and of course we’re fellow BYU fans, but you’re kind of giving the rest of us a bad name, here.
I hope everyone realizes that you don’t speak for all BYU fans.
Just to chill
He likes tough words. Read above and you’ll see.

My bad holly
Much like the BYU v Utah football game words shared afterward take any level of respect away.
by vaughnzipper on Feb 27, 2010 5:14 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
You're cool, holly.
I realize that all BYU fans aren’t like VZ. Look, all of the people here are basically rivals, yet we all are good with each other. All fanbases have people like VZ. I don’t hold it against you, and I hope you don’t hold my comments to him against me.
Yeah rules don't apply to you
Nice comment. My comments effect BYU fans but yours don’t represent UNM? Interesting.
by vaughnzipper on Feb 27, 2010 5:26 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Oh and for roleplayer or others
I don’t hold chills comments against UNM. Every team has fans like chill.

Entertaining
Always fun seeing the Cougars and Lobos fans battling it out. We’ll see you in Las Vegas in a couple weeks.
Hopefully BYU escapes the Rebs at least until the finals
Go SDSU!

tournament
I never thought I’d find myself intrigued by Utah-CSU to close out the regular season. I have to think Utah is at least a little bit in the Rebels’ heads. As long as Utah keeps winning, UNLV gets another crack at CSU in the first round.

Yeah, putting aside all the trash talk.
It lived up to its billing of a great game. I don’t remember how many lead changes there were, but it was a ton. High scoring, dramatic, everything you’d want in a great college BB game. I’m glad I saw it. If I were a fan from an opposing conference and I happened to turn on this game for whatever reason, I’d be really entertained.
Whoa!!
This thing has blown up since I last checked in. Yesterday’s game was awesome, but gut-wrenching. I was, of course, happy that the Lobos won, but I am still sad that we have only put teams away early a couple times this year. We had some key opportunities wasted that continue to tick me off. That being said, it was nice to see the Lobos continue to be in control of the game at the end of the halves – that’s important! – just wish they would have sinked some free throws to seal it instead of having to show up big on D.
Sorry that Fredette was hurt. I definitely enjoy watching him play. That being said, you do have to be happy with what Loyd showed. I bet Rose will utilize him in some unique ways come tournament time.
Not sure that I really want to open up this can of worms, but I totally missed what happened with JT after the game. I’ve read that Steve Alford called him a “class act” for apologizing for some words exchanged. Was that for the heated moment during the game? Something happen after? I hate Versus, but at least I got to watch a game. I really hate the Mtn.
I'm a Rebel, but I bleed the cherry and silver of the Lobos.
I'm admittedly not a fan of Tavernari
So near the end of the game JT didn’t slap hands with DH or DG after the quick scuffle. Remember when They kept the camera on JT for a minute while he was blowing steam off? That was the start. Anyways, during the handshakes after the game Alford got in JT’s face and called him an a hole. Now, I called JT a few words when he took that stupid 3 at the end of the game but for the coach to do it?That’s Max Hall like.
The part I really don’t understand is why JT went to their locker room to apologize. I mean, I know he’s and idiot but for him to be the bigger person and to go apologize and not Alford? Interesting. I’m thinking he went to celebrate because he gave that game away.

Context
I am not defending Alford. I think he was wrong. That being said, I do not think you can say he was not the bigger person or that Tavernari was. I am willing to bet – yes, I know we will never know – that Tavernari was sent out of his lockerroom by the coach to go and apologize. Meanwhile, Alford was fulfilling his responsibilities to his team. I am not saying he would have apologized after adjourning the postgame meeting, but he didn’t really have a chance, and he should not be held accountable for that.
Anyway, I am done on this subject. It was settled by those two.
I'm a Rebel, but I bleed the cherry and silver of the Lobos.
I heard
on ESPN that Alford was saying it has been a great career to JT because it was Senior Day. Jt then exploded with anger, which then Alford called him an ass-hole. That is why JT apologized after the game.
