Lobos Escape Another Close One, Extend Streak to 12
The New Mexico Lobos(25-3, 11-2) extended their streak to 12 games with a hard fought 72-66 win over Colorado State(15-11, 6-7). Dairese Gary and Adam Nigon tied for the game high with 23 points a piece. This game was tight the whole way as the biggest lead by the Lobos was 6 and CSU had a 7 point lead in the 1st half. The shooting was pretty even with UNM at 36.8% and CSU at 38.5%. The Lobos had a critical run to start the 2nd half turning a 3 point deficit into a 6 point lead before the Rams got back into the game. The Rams stagnant offense late in the game matched with the Lobos defense was the end of the Rams upset bid. The biggest stat would be the Lobos 17 offensive rebounds, 12 of which came in the second half. The Lobos out rebounded the Rams 41 - 29.
Darington Hobson had a double double with 15 points and 10 boards. Roman Martinez hit 4 threes on his way to 17 points and 12 rebounds. Dairese Gary was once again a stud and controlled the game the last few minutes.
Andy Ogide and Dorian Green both hit double figures in points with 12 and 11 respectively.

Great game!
That was the best CSU home game all year, outcome could have went better for CSU but fun game all around.
Anyone else with me when I say the MWC refs are against upsets? There were a few very touchy calls inside of 4 minutes in a close game. CSU even got one light call late so it went both ways, sort of. The Rams couldn’t play defense, even if your moving your feet and beat the guy to the spot they were getting called for blocks.

BYU fans are anxious for Saturday
It’s shaping up to be a straight up slaughter with how poorly UNM is playing. That’s 3 close wins against the bottom dwellers in the MWC over their last 4 games.
Now, we just need to keep our eyes on SDSU first before we get anxious to exact revenge on UNM. This could be the best week in the history of BYU ball!
Watch out!
Steve will get his players well prepared and be looking to win in Provo for the first time; he has won everywhere else in the MWC except Provo. Also the game against Wyoming wasn’t close.

The game against WYO wasn't close
but Utah, AFA, and CSU certainly were. Hence, 3 of the last 4. Average margin of victory? 4 points. Combined record for those 3? 36-42, not exactly the strongest.
If Alford is struggling to take down these kinds of teams I wouldn’t be so confident that he can suddenly get them to do it now.

My bad
All of those games were wins, that’s what counts. The Lobos have not won 12 straight by luck.

SDSU game was also close
They were a missed free throw and and Hobson 3/4th court miracle away from losing.

Close wins....
for the 3rd youngest team in the nation to have 12 straight conference wins, 6 straight road wins, 10 wins away from the pit , 2 twelve game winning streaks and 5 wins over ranked teams..all while playing without question the toughest overall schedule in the mwc…I’ll take it every year…and smile all the way to the NCAA tournament…we’ll show up Saturday and do what we do…if you beat us, props to you but you won’t hear me talking about ugly wins or loses…there are no style points in basketball…you either win or you lose
My team isn't playing you Saturday
and there ARE style points in basketball, when it comes down the committee choosing at-large bids and seeding. New Mexico is already guaranteed an at large bid though, so I guess their style points don’t matter anymore except for seeding purposes.

Style Points are considered, but not before wins.
The factors at which people look (even on Selection Sunday) are prioritized. I doubt that someone looks at “style points” over “wins.” Style points come into question when you are on the bubble of a decision – and they usually factor into a team’s losses.

No crushing wins
The Lobos have not really slaughtered anyone…they’ve just been winning, which is good enough for me and any other fan. I’m glad that BYU fans are excited. The pressure is really on the Cougars to defend the homecourt and not lose to that Lobo team that barely beats the weak schools and is young and overhyped and overrated.
Come quicker, Saturday!

It still worries me a lot that we play to the level of our opponents.
It always seems that we are solid consistently in rebounding and defense.
But we are so streaky around the perimeter! And it seems like we never square up for jump shots. It’s always three points or drive to the basket.
And almost on cue, some dude will get hot and hit 5/6 from the three point line against us. I wonder if that’s because we are so worried about getting beat down low that we don’t contest the outside shots as much? I guess it makes some sense to say “we are going to win the battle of the boards and the paint. You’ll have to have a career game from beyond the arc to beat us.” Which would be fine, but how does that plan work against someone like Jimmer Fridette, who hits from anywhere on the court?
True
but each game is different and the plan for each is different too. Fredette is the type of player to whom you concede something and make a plan that affects the rest of the team or attempt to shut down and see what the rest of the team can do. I have faith in Gary coming up big on D when he’s called to do so.
We’ll see though. I share all of your concerns, especially our shooting peaks and valleys, but knowing what the Lobos can do is what keeps me optimistic. And like I said, everyone expects the Lobos to lose; BYU was supposed to be in the position at the beginning of the season. Furthermore, we have been in this type of position already this year (@TAMU and @UNLV) so I think we can handle it. I look forward to seeing if we do.

Bottom Dwellers!?!
Come on now, the Rams are Middle Dwellers at the very least.
They haven’t beaten any of the top 4, but they also haven’t lost to any of the bottom 4. Give us a little love for a well played game.
You did play well...
and your program is moving in the right direction.
I must apologize...
I respect you very much as a contributor to discussion, and though I thought about defending your Rams, I did not. You are more than justified in saying that CSU is not a bottom dweller. If they had beaten a top 4 team or a good non-conference team they might be a lock for the NIT. I look forward to seeing what the Rams do next year.

Rams
are stuck right in the middle. They are an ok team and have a shot to make the NIT

Long long shot now...
I think the Rams NIT shot went bye bye last night when they lost to UNM. They needed a marque win and #10 in the nation would have been a good one. Unless they put together an amazing MWC tournament run I think their season will end early.
Bring back Fum's Song!
Gracias
Thanks RP. The whole conference is a rising tide right now. CSU’s been a bottom dweller in BBall for so long I couldn’t let that slide. I don’t think most people realize how amazing a .500 conference record is for the Rams this year!
Still looking forward to the tourney… we’ve been known to make a run or two in Vegas.
Cheers!
