Admiral Ackbar For Ole Miss Mascot

This was just too fun to not post. Ole Miss is getting rid of Colonel Reb to distance themselves from the Old South mascot and I am sure that it has absolutely nothing with the Klan showing up in protest at Ole Miss in full gear before being escorted away by the authorities. Their reason was to protest the school's the decision to not have the band play "From Dixie With Love."

The serious stuff is now out of the way and here comes the fan favorite for the new Ole Miss mascot. The leading fan candidate is none other then Admiral Ackbar. Better know for his 'It's a Trap!' This movement has its own web page, twitter, and Facebook account.

I instantly followed the Admiral on twitter and facebook, and so should you.

My Alma Mater

Just to clarify: Ole Miss actually got rid of Col. Reb in 2003. There just remains a foundation which has taken it upon itself to fight for the “survival” of Col. Reb, which has never been an option. He’s gone.

As far as this Admiral Ackbar thing, there is obviously a group of students that started the thing as a creative joke of sorts…but the Admiral has really garnered a lot of support. You can check out RedCupRebellion, SBNation’s Ole Miss blog, which, in addition to being funny and full of pretty talented writers on sports, has also commented pretty heavily on Admiral Ackbar. Som examples are here, here and here.

One guy even wrote to the actor who played Ackbar…and got a response.
