Mountain West Basketball Power Poll: 2/15/2010

Some more shifting going on with San Diego State and New Mexico getting key wins this week.  For the third straight week there is a new team at the top.  This week there is a tie with New Mexico and BYU.

I went for UNM because of their 9 game streak.  Also SDSU over UNLV because the Rebels two game skid.  SDSU is 6-2 in their last 8 and both losses were by two points to BYU and @UNM(OT).  SDSU is playing like they hate the NIT right now.

Am I allowed to say mean things on this blog?!?

Because I want to say something like, “Sam’s delusional!” but I won’t.

I disagree

At least BYU wins at home. More than UNM can say…

by vaughnzipper on Feb 15, 2010 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, they do.

But so do UNM and UNLV. Just because you lose ONE game at home does not mean you are terrible…especially when you can make up for it on the road. Let’s not go overboard forgetting how good most MWC teams are at defending their own court (when they are competitive).

by Role Player on Feb 16, 2010 5:35 AM PST up reply actions

I'm still trying to figure out how that's delusional?

UNM split the series with UNLV, so did BYU. UNM has yet to play round 2 with both BYU and SDSU, they are 1-1 but since UNM is the “better” team over SDSU then wouldn’t BYU’s loss @ UNM look better than a UNM loss @ SDSU… not to mention that it was a double digit loss, when BYU lost by 4.

Really, you the delusional piece plays in your favor. I wouldn’t complain.

by vaughnzipper on Feb 15, 2010 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

Its also bias

What a lot of fans thought should of been a no call on billy white at the end of the game helped win it for UNM (wasn’t the only reason but he could use it as reasoning for himself). If you follow that bias then there could be a case that SDSU is better then UNM and as a fan for SDSU he does have a right to his bias.

There were also a few questionable calls in New Mexico's overtime win over Utah

Had they not called the foul on Drca late (his 5th foul on a play that would have put them up 2 on OT, instead UNM hits a 3) the Utes probably would have won.

by Michael Rueckert on Feb 15, 2010 10:07 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not trying to blame the officials

I just think it is pretty clear that in both head to head match-ups of UNM and SDSU, SDSU clearly outplayed the Lobos in both games.

Aztecs ranked ahead of the Lobos?

How? rpi lower, sos worse, overall record worse, league record worse, road record worse, quality wins not even close, national ranking, NCAA lock.. all of it favors UNM. The game that will haunt SDSU all summer is the Wyoming debacle..giving up a 17 point lead and losing. The only way you dance is winning out and making it to the finals of the tournament.

by tram04 on Feb 16, 2010 4:40 AM PST up reply actions

Like I said

Head to head, the Aztecs have outplayed the Lobos both times, thus my ranking. Additionally, the Aztecs can also get the MWC’s auto-bid as well as an at-large. Thirdly, what does this post have to do with making it to the NCAA tournament?

please..

first head to head you are 1-1 against the lobos..you lead the second game for a grand total of less than two minutes..were down double digits with less than three minutes to go and made some off balance deep threes to stay in the game…I give you credit for hitting them but to say you outplayed unm in that game is reaching deep…second…oh nevermind I guess being a homer is not a bad thing..third…isn’t making the ncaa tournament why they play the games?

In the SDSU game Darington Hobson was NOT fouled but it was called anyway; in the Utah game Drca clearly charged whoever it was (I think Martinez, but not sure).

Also, I’m not sure which game it was, but Hobson got a technical off a phantom punch which costed the Lobos some points.

by rockies17_4 on Feb 15, 2010 11:34 PM PST up reply actions

The Technical Hobson received against UNLV

Was correct, I watched that game, it was a cheap shot by Hobson, although it wasn’t something substantial so they had the right to call a technical but not throw him out of the game. And that didn’t cost the Lobos any points, UNLV went down and turned the ball over…

by rebelfan1 on Feb 16, 2010 3:41 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think he touched the UNLV player

He swung his arm and who knows if he actually hit him, but the player did not even have a reaction.

Whatever the call was it didn’t affect the game, because you said they turned the ball over. I watched the game, but I didn’t remember what happened after. Thanks.

by rockies17_4 on Feb 16, 2010 8:31 PM PST up reply actions

Ya im cool with the foul being called

Because he still had to hit the free throws, only thing is i agree with sam that we outplayed UNM both games.

We beat UNM by double digits at home

and should have beaten them on the road at the end of regulation and and the end of OT.

Ok... But.

How do you take Utah over CSU? Rams beat Utah on the road and haven’t had any bad loses in conference. Did I mention they’ve won 4 of 5? Utah…. oh yeah, they’ve lost 4 of 5…. please explain.

Typographical error

I meant CSU over Utah Ive been voting that like the whole time, my bad.

Thanks Both

Thanks for the change. It’s been a while sense the ol’ Rams have been out of the basement… hated seeing them slipping back!

- Cheers

Go Rammies!

Great to have another CSU fan on board… feel like a loner since I have been writing here.

Hopefully CSU stays in that 5 spot or even moves up. Three ranked opponents in a row is killer though.

Thanks

I’m just glad I found a site with plenty of MWC news. I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. Rams next three could be rough but aside from the UGLY win vs. Air Force I like the way they are playing. And two of those three are at home where we’re 9-2 this year.

by GoRammies on Feb 16, 2010 10:20 AM PST up reply actions

Fair enough...

and I hope you know I was picking fun.

However, they did not win at the end of regulation or in OT. They could have, but they did not make those plays. To this point, they have the worse record, which includes a loss to the team you ranked 8th. That’s why I think it is funny.

Oh course, Lord knows that I am not unbiased either.

I'm a Rebel, but I bleed cherry and silver.

by Role Player on Feb 16, 2010 5:32 AM PST up reply actions

There is not though...

UNM: 1+1+1+3=6; 6/4=1.67
BYU: 2+2+1+2=7; 7/4=1.75

I think you guys are right about having UNLV drop down to 4th

They haven’t been doing well as of late on rebounding without Derrick Jasper. Hopefully when UNLV gets him back they can get it together on the glass to make a run in the tourney.

Up to #7? Is this an all time high for TCU in the MWC Power Poll?

by HawkeyedFrog on Feb 15, 2010 9:01 PM PST reply actions

Not sure how much of it is TCU

Or that Wyoming’s program has just fell apart the last 2-3 weeks.

Power rankings

I forgot to submit my rankings for this week. If I’d done so, I would have had BYU #1, New Mexico #2, UNLV #3, and SDSU #4. It’s a very tight bunch up at the top, in spite of what some people might think.
