Best in the West college Basketball Rankings

www.theleftcoastbias.com is a new site that does weekly best in the west college basketball rankings. They have been giving the Mountain West lots of love lately. They have 4 teams in their top ten, with New Mexico at number 2 and BYU at number 3. There is a chance that the top 4 teams from the MWC could get into the Big dance, which is pretty crazy considering the Pac-10 might only get one team. What are everyone's thoughts on seeding for UNM? Could they get a 3 seed if they finish strong. Their RPI is in the top ten

The way the committee decides on seeding is not by polls...

It’s by RPI and SOS. Right now, UNM’s RPI and SOS are pretty high, so it’s not like they won’t get at least a 5 seed unless they drop one to Air Force. If UNM can win out or maybe lose to BYU only and go deep in the conference tourney, they could be a 4 seed. It is unlikely for them to get a 3 seed, but if they win out (beating BYU) their RPI will be close to the top 5 going into the conference tournament. The only reason they wouldnt get a 2 seed in that scenario is that they don’t play in the Big East, Big 10, Big 12 or any of the other power 6 conferences in the NCAA. Yes the MWC has 4 great teams this year, but the A-10 has 6 teams like that. We’re not the top flight hoops league yet, but we do have quality opponents in the league.

They could get a 3 seed if they win out and go deep in the MWC Tourney. I see them getting a 4 or 5 seed though. At that spot they probably go to the sweet 16 because of the talent they have.

RPI

Is good for New Mexico to get them a high seed. Which could be similar to Utah a few years back where they got a 5 seed based on their RPI being so good. A 3 seed will require UNM or BYU winning out through the conference tournament.

I was so glad when I saw our (UNM) non-conference schedule at the beginning of the season...

Playing a tough schedule is key for 2 reasons:
1. Getting used to playing tough teams in a high pressure atmosphere. As talented as those Dave Bliss teams were in the late 90’s, they always played a cupcake schedule and never won away from the Pit. Maybe now we’re conditioned to do well in the NCAAs.
2. RPI, baby! It was worth the tough games if we get a great seed.

It’s nice to see the MWC start taking itself seriously and pushing the envelope. The goal should be to go deep in the NCAAs. In the past it seemed like all MWC/old WAC teams cared about was winning the conference or beating a rival.
