The Utes nearly pulled off a huge upset tonight. History indicated that this game wouldn't be an easy win for New Mexico, and it was right.
After trailing most of the game, the Utah hung tough with New Mexico and never quit. Carlon Brown hit a three pointer for Utah with about 2 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Momentum was on Utah's side as Luca Drca hit David Foster for an alley-oop dunk to put the Utes up by 2, but a charging foul was called on Drca. The foul was his fifth and sent him to the bench. After that, momentum took an immediate shift towards the Lobos.
New Mexico built a lead, but Utah kept it somewhat close. Marshall Henderson and Carlon Brown had looks to send it into double overtime, but their shots didn't fall.
Henderson led the Utes with 21 points and Carlon Brown added 18. For the Lobos Dairese Gary scored 19 and grabbed 5 rebounds. Darington Hobson nearly had a triple-double for New Mexico, finishing with 11 assists, 10 rebounds and 8 points.
The game was another close game that the Utes have lost, dropped their record to (11-13, 4-6) with UNLV, SDSU and BYU still left to play. It looks very likely that the Utes will finish with a losing season. Meanwhile, New Mexico improved their league leading record to (23-3, 9-2) with just BYU being the only good team left to play.
