The Mountain West can be divided into four groups; elite, good, pretty good, and flat-out awful. Without further delay, I present my pre-bowl power rankings for the Mountain West Conference!
Group 1
TCU
This could not be more obvious. TCU steamrolled everyone but SDSU. They have the most talent by far in the conference and if fate allows it, they will be playing for the national title. Cross your fingers that Oregon State or South Carolina pulls an upset! If they get to play for the title, they will do well.
Dalton's health is a concern, but it looks like he will be ok.
Group 2:
Utah
Beat everyone but TCU. Dominated those they should. Beat two good teams on the road (SDSU and AFA). Hung on to outlast BYU's upset bid. Very disappointing to see them get beat so bad by TCU.
Group 3:
SDSU
AFA
BYU
These three all finished 5-3 in conference play. There was not a clear winner among them as each beat one and lost to one. I have to put SDSU first in this group because of the way they played TCU and the fact that they lost to BYU on a controversial play. BYU has to be last due to the fact that they lost to Utah State. Its out of conference, but it was inexcusable.
All three are very good teams and will probably win whatever bowl games they go to.
Group 4:
CSU
UNLV
WYO
UNM
Who cares to rank these guys? They beat up each other and all looked awful. They tie for the bottom. If the MWC could boot them out (except for CSU) in football, it would be wise to do so. Unfortunately, UNLV and UNM have outstanding basketball programs that make it hard to boot them out. Why is wyoming in this conference?
It has been a fun year and I can't wait for Bowl season! Here is to a 5-0 record for the MWC!\
