REPORT: Hawai'i To Join Mountain West Conference As Football Only Member
UPDATE: Watch the Hawai'i press conference announcement.
Looks like the expansion front is not over as a report coming out of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that Hawai'i has been offered to join the Mountain West in football only and the other sports in the Big West. The report says that Mountain West officials had a meeting today to approve adding Hawai'i as a football-only member of the conference. A press conference is being held tonight at 7 p.m. Hawai'i time which is midnight eastern to make the announcement.
I am skeptical of this because Craig Thompson has said multiple times that to be a member of the Mountain West schools must participate in football, mens and women's basketball and women's volley ball. During the summer when BYU was making their move to go independent Craig Thompson said there would be no concessions made to BYU to keep them in the league. There were suggestions of BYU going independent in football with other sports staying in the Mountain West, but that was not an option according to Craig Thompson.
This is either a move to ultimately rip apart the WAC, who just assumed they shored up their league by adding Texas State, University of Texas at Austin for football and Denver for non-football sports. Also, this could be a move if TCU goes to the Big East for football only while keeping the rest of the sports in the Mountain West, or this could be nothing.
The Big West is known as the California Bus League and I am not sure how these schools who bus to -- I think -- all of their games can now afford to go to Hawai'i one a year for basketball, soccer, volleyball or baseball. Only Cal Poly and UC-Davis have football and they are on the FCS level.
If there is a press conference tonight at 7 p.m. Hawai'i time which again is midnight on the east coast stay tuned here for that.

No!
Why doesn’t Craig Thompson read our long thought out ideas about expansion instead of making crappy decisions like this? Also, if this is true then they must be considering a 12th member as 11 does not work well.

Hawaii
Was a conference mate of a lot of MWC teams for a long time in the old WAC (pre-16-team) days.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 9:04 PM PST up reply actions
Yes, and part of the reason the MWC was formed was because they were tired of paying travel costs to Hawaii.
Granted, being football only mitigates much of that. Travel costs are going to be horrible for the Big West.
yup
they are mainly a bus league.

Considering
That Hawaii was with the MWC teams (sans UNLV) for 25 years before the MWC was formed, I’m gonna say that’s some revisionist history right there.
The MWC was formed because the WAC was too big and added a bunch of poorly-competitive teams across a massive geographical footprint.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 9:16 PM PST up reply actions
There's a reason Hawaii was left out, though.
They were competitive in football, but the travel is killer.
Again
That’s a revisionist view. Cost was a part of the equation, but it wasn’t the main reason by any stretch or means for leaving Hawaii out.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 9:20 PM PST up reply actions
I never said it was the main reason.
And you can’t tell me if travel wasn’t an issue that the MWC would have been much more likely to want Hawaii.
Hawaii
Was down in sports at the time, and coming off football seasons of:
1998: 0-12
1997: 3-9
1996: 2-10
1995: 4-8
1994: 3-8-1
My recollection of the split was that a lot of it was motivated by the desire to have better competition.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 9:30 PM PST up reply actions
I'm pretty sure that was definitely most of it.
But all the schools hated the travel. That definitely played a role, IMO, even if not a main one.
I don't deny
That it played a role, but I don’t like how people just say “travel costs” as if it was the reason. It was a part of the reason, but their football record had more to do with it. And that football record (and other sports sucking) coupled with travel costs was a deal-breaker.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 9:35 PM PST up reply actions
Right, we agree.
I never meant to imply that it was the main reason. Just that it was an issue (however large or small), and the schools certainly weren’t sad to get rid of those costs.
The travel was killer for the non-profit sports
With it only being football, the cash made will pay for the extra travel.

by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 9:24 PM PST up reply actions
I have no idea how the costs will end up balancing, but I think you're right.
The non-profit sports is the definitely the bulk of the travel issue.
It will be interesting to see if there actually is a press conference...

One can only hope
I wonder if Hawaii was about to go independent (which would help BYU) and the MWC made this move out of pure spite.
None that I've seen are.
Some are still unsure, but I don’t think any of these moves change any of the reasons BYU made that decision in the first place.
not short term
They get decent money from ESPN deal, but still just as tough to go to BCS game I think hoops will regret it when they join the WCC and realize it is a tow bid league max.

Farewell, WAC. It's been a nice run, really.
This will probably put the nail in the coffin for the WAC as a serious competitor to the MWC. LaTech may now jump ship to a more local conference, and that leaves the WAC as the Sun Belt of the west.
The one huge benefit to the MWC is that a roadie to Hawaii allows you to have a 13th regular season game. That can translate into extra revenue for half of the conference every year.

not sure
But, it is a WAC contract even though played on Boise State’s home field. My thinking was that maybe the WAC would like to keep a bowl near a local team.

Right now, the WAC has to hold on to everything it can possibly keep.
You’re right; the contracts with bowl games are by conference, not by host stadium. But I’m sure the Humanitarian would love to switch to a MWC tie-in.
I think the key for the Humanitarian is order of preference. For example, would you prefer to host the WAC #3 or the MWC #7? (I just pulled those numbers out of air; adjust as you see fit.)
by David Hooper on Nov 18, 2010 7:58 PM PST up reply actions
It's contractual
and the bowls are officially independent “non-profits” If there is a contract with the WAC, they would have to get out of that contract. Most of the contracts with the smaller bowls are fairly short term, and most have “outs”.
BUT….of course in any local bowl there are fans and alumns of local schools, and the bowls also want that local support and tie ins for their bowls too.
So..all that for: It’s all negotiable.

got that right
I can see La. Tech going to the Sun Belt and then Idaho, New Mexico State, Utah State, and San Jose State either go independent, stay with UTSA and Texas State and grab another team or the worst case scenario for some of those schools would be to drop to FCS.

I think a LaTech-to-CUSA, UTEP-to-MWC move is wide open now.
CUSA would become considerably more compact and UTEP would fit in nicely with New Mexico.
Another possibility is SMU in place of UTEP. I know that TCU isn’t hot on that idea, but I think it’d be better for the conference than TCU gives credit for.
by David Hooper on Nov 18, 2010 7:46 PM PST up reply actions
SMU
I think will get a TCU veto, and I’m sure that the MWC will want to keep TCU as happy as they can.
Now if TCU leaves for the Big Least, than SMU becomes FAR more valuable.
Colorado Rockies correspondent at My Team Rivals (www.mtrmedia.com/rockies) and my own site Rockies Reporter (www.rockiesreporter.wordpress.com)
Do you think the addition of Hawaii would deter the Texas CUSA schools from joining?
You know this boogie is for real.
Not so fast
Now that I think about it,the loss of Hawaii and the addition of the Texas schools makes the WAC footprint more manageable.
Couldn’t they just pilfer Sun Belt schools and split into an East/West format? (granted they could get NCAA exemptions for all the longevity rules)
I'd say just the opposite
it makes it FAR cheaper and profitable to be in the WAC

I have to believe this move came at the recommendation of the three new schools.
The one thing I wonder is if the revenue benefit of the 13th game outweighs the cost of travel to the islands. If so, this was a good move for a conference that still needs to watch its budget.
The other upside is that Hawaii games often get isolated late-hour billing on ESPN thanks to its time zone. Perhaps this helps the MWC negotiate a better deal with ESPN for airtime.
not going to happen
MWC will not redo tv deal to be on ESPN. The league can redo the current deal money wise depending on if the league gains teams or loses teams.

another team has to come for FB
11 teams is a bad number, so a 12th will be added. It does kill off the WAC. 5 teams left and La. Tech will certainly go to the Sun Belt and be a force there, or maybe C-USA if UTEP goes to MWC as 12th team.

this makes a lot of sense for both sides
Hawaii doesn’t get banished to the 1-A wasteland that the WAC had already become even before their departure, and MWC doesn’t have to deal with the logistical nightmare that is Hawaii’s other sports.
FWIW, what Thompson really meant was that MWC wasn’t willing to be TCU/Big East’s bitch and be the receptacle for TCU’s other sports if football wasn’t part of the deal. I doubt anyone in the league office minds getting Hawaii as a football only team.
Did not think of that
Having them as football only makes a lot of sense as you said with that extra game.

UTSA and Texas St to the Sun Belt
they’ll be at ten by adding South Alabama but they could pick up LA Tech and/or NM St
I think
It’d be a good move for those two schools, and it’d certainly make more geographic sense given travel concerns.
You’d have a split of:
West
UTSA
Texas State
North Texas
Louisiana-Monroe
Louisiana-Lafayette
Arkansas State
East
Florida International
Florida Atlantic
South Alabama
Troy
Middle Tennessee State
Western Kentucky
I actually think that given their size, UTSA and Texas State are better additions than La. Tech and NMSU, too.

To me
It would have made more sense for both conferences to stay at 10 teams then. One cross-conference title game instead of a pair of conference title games and a cross-conference championship. Now we’re talking about 16 games potentially if a team plays Hawai’i in Honolulu.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 10:24 PM PST up reply actions
ya but the 13th game is an option....
but I know what you mean however Air Force would be pissed if they stayed at 10

And you’re still talking 15 games guaranteed in a sport where most play 13.

honestly
we are talking about 1 more game, most of the conferences have/are getting CCGs (except the Big12 ironically)
That's still 1 more game they can lose
And 1 more game they can get injuries.
And with Hawai’i, you’re talking about going from 13-16 games for MWC teams.

Who knows whether or not that’s true.

Hey so....
if TCU is gone…couldn’t the MWC kill the WAC offically by adding Utah St and UTEP with CUSA taking LA Tech and just dissolve the conference allowing the new conference lineup to begin next year with no exit fees? And if so could that lineup, including TCU’s stats all go towards the MWC’s 2012 AQ evaluation?
I think WAC
Is already dead with this move.

So....
Is it still possible to maybe steal Denver from the WAC too now for non-football sports? I know they just committed to moving to the WAC, but how binding is that?
It makes sense to balance out the non-football schedule, in my opinion.

could work but Seattle would add another market that the future TV contracts would want….the Denver market is semi-wrapped up with Air Force and CO St
Future TV contracts
Aren’t going to come down to basketball very much, and Seattle would be a geographical outlier.

They are a good program and a travel partner for TCU, however I could see USU since Comcast cable is in the whole state. However, once a channel is on a certain lineup it takes time to get it off or move it around to a higher tier (i think)

?
A.) They still play nearly every year, so it’s not about the SWC
B.) Where would this money come from?
I think TCU’s opposition to SMU stems more from not wanting to share their market with a conference mate . This is especially relevant with recruits.

It’ll be there whether SMU joins or not.

It’ll be the same whether SMU joins or not.
What’s the attraction in adding SMU if there’s already a team in that market? I love talking about the history of SMU as much as the next person, but at this point they haven’t been relevant in 30 years.
There’s really no value in adding SMU unless TCU is leaving (to replace the DFW market), but even that doesn’t mean that adding them is the right move.

If TCU leaves
UTEP is the best fit, in my opinion, though SMU could fill the gap in the DFW market if the MWC then adds 2 teams. If TCU stays, UTEP and/or Houston are both better choices than SMU.
UTEP for its history with conference mates, geographic location, facilities, and local support.
Houston since it’s another market and has potential.
SMU has it’s positives, such as being a historic football power, a nicer stadium than anyone in the MWC, and killer academics. However, it doesn’t do anything in terms of adding a market, and geographically, it’s an outlier.
My biggest question, however, is that if TCU leaves, why would SMU even want in? The MWC wouldn’t be getting AQ status at that point, and travel becomes a bitch for SMU and its conference mates.

With the round robin schedule TCU and rest of the East will only have to go to Hawaii once every 4 years.

It’s a little more complicated with 11 teams, because you’re missing 2 teams every year, which really ratchets up the odds of there being a tie between teams who didn’t face each other.
That never happened once in the 26 years the Pac-10 didn’t play a full round-robin.

seems very unlikely then. I guess I’m just attracted to the idea of a championship game, but I’d rather wait it out than add a school and regret it.

Ditto
Those are my sentiments exactly. My opinions on who to add are basically an extension of “if we’re going to add someone anyway.”

Do you think that the loss of TCU would completely sink that hope?

TCU's stats
Will count for the MWC no matter what, but the MWC is less likely to get a waiver if a team like TCU is what’s keeping the stats up and they’re then gone.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 11:07 PM PST up reply actions
will Utah and BYU count as well?
You know this boogie is for real.
by plainview88 on Nov 18, 2010 11:09 PM PST up reply actions
No
Because they won’t be in the conference next year. Next year is the cutoff year. Even if TCU decides to leave, they can’t leave before next year.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 11:10 PM PST up reply actions
Exactly
That’s another scenario where adding other teams could work.
However, even then, it may be necessary to be patient so as to not risk losing AQ status a few years later.

Yeah
I didn’t see Hawai’i’ coming either. Hopefully it’s not due to the MWC knowing something we don’t about TCU…

nobody did
All I heard was they would go indy and then join Big West in other sports.

Question for you videogamers
Do any of the newer versions of the NCAA games let you rearrange the conferences and/or allow for a playoff alternative? I never upgraded to a PS3 or X-Box 360 and haven’t bought a college game in probably 3 years, but I’m curious.
For some reason, I’m under the impression that you had a playoff option in one of the Genesis versions in the way back when, so it’s not unprecedented.

Umm ya if this news came before the summer before the season starts
After they finish game any news after that has to wait till next years game
by WolfpackNev on Nov 18, 2010 11:12 PM PST up reply actions
No
I mean can you manually re-arrange the conferences yet? Or are they still not allowing that? i.e. I could put any teams in any conference I want.
It would sure save me a lot of grief were I to get a newer game.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 11:14 PM PST up reply actions
I think
you can swap teams around, but in BYU’s case not sure if you can make a team go indy

misread question
nah theres no conference switching option
by WolfpackNev on Nov 18, 2010 11:13 PM PST up reply actions
my NCAA 10 game lets you custom the conferences
but you can only replace teams, not add additional schools. I added NV and boise with Utah to the PAC10 WA st and BYU to the WAC
You can realign the conferences, but no playoffs. What I did/tried to do was put what would be the Pac 12 teams in the Big 12, and the Big 12/10 in the Pac 10 slots. Then it got tricky…

by plainview88 on Nov 18, 2010 11:13 PM PST up reply actions
Hm
That’s at least somewhat nice.
Last I checked you could only move up FCS/create-a-team schools into FBS conferences, but trying to move the team you replaced merely restored them to their original spot.
Then again, the last NCAA game I bought was ‘07 or ’08 (I’m not a huge gamer).
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 11:15 PM PST up reply actions
I’m not really either, thats the only game I have. They don’t have the FCS teams anymore, but you can still create a school.

QB
I was a pretty shitty QB, I just came from a name school. I didn’t even start at my HS – I just met their coach at a couple camps and clinics.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 11:30 PM PST up reply actions
I was also offered
A basketball scholarship at an NAIA school even though I wasn’t on my HS basketball team. To be fair, however, my HS consisted of about 6,000 kids to put a team together from.

I really wanted to play BBall for my hometown JuCo school, but they were way too good and I would of had to gone to N Dakota or somewhere like that to get a shot to walk on and ride the bench. Truth is I wasn’t good, but as far as playing a sport, bball is as good as gets for my money.
You know this boogie is for real.
by plainview88 on Nov 18, 2010 11:35 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, I totally agree
Basketball is, and always will be, my first love. I just wish that as a child coaches had looked at my father and realized I wasn’t going to be tall enough to play the 3 my whole life. I only wound up at 6’3 (I was 6’1 when I graduated HS), and never developed the skill set to play guard.
And your reasoning is the same reason I didn’t take any of my athletic offers – especially the football one. I wasn’t going to go to a lesser school to maybe play.
by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 11:40 PM PST up reply actions
Yep, and when I realized how much it would cost to go to a half way decent school, I went the Military route instead of loans. And when I ride the bench of our Squadron team, I think I was wise to not chase that dream.

True enough
But I didn’t have a very strong arm and was slow. I mainly got props for always knowing the plays, routes, check-downs, etc. That and taking a million tackles like a champ while running the option.

Something was going to be wrong because of all the new alignment… I had to get the new Big 10 w NU somewhere and get Boise, Nevada, etc into the MWC. I think somehow I ended up with the WAC being the left overs conference. It had BYU, Duke, some others… I tried to get a dynasty started but no one got on board

by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 11:28 PM PST up reply actions
I have NCAA 11
and it’s the best football game ever.
BUT….you can’t swap conference membership NUMBERS but you can change out schools. You can also swap all the teams in a conference. Many people online said for example that they switched the Pac-10 and the Big 12 schools. You can also drop teams from a conference. So many put Nebraska in the Big 10…but it’s fixed at 11 teams, so they usually drop like Northwestern.
It will be interesting to see if they change this in next years game. I for one would love to play the changing conferences. I mean in next year’s game Nevada for example would be in the WAC still, but if you played the Dynasty mode, we all know, and the programmers would also know that Nevada would be in the MWC in the 2nd year of the “Dynasty”.

Question
BYU has the WAC as anchor games for their schedule. Doesnt this screw BYU if the WAC breaks up in 2 years?
It'll certainly hurt
That’s for sure.

by VA Libertarian on Nov 18, 2010 11:17 PM PST up reply actions
I suppose it’ll matter less to me if TCU leaves to the Big East, but I really don’t like this move from a MWC perspective. Hawaii doesn’t add a new market, it doesn’t add fertile recruiting grounds, it doesn’t lock up Utah again, it doesn’t necessarily kill the WAC. All it does is add Hawaii, and add a game to our schedules every other year- which is kind of cool I guess, but it doesn’t do a thing for the MWC image wise, and Hawaii didn’t join in time for their stats to count for the MWC.
I don’t think Hawaii adds anything to the MWC except a long-ass plane ride.
It adds more depth to the conference.
TCU and Boise State are the marquee teams in the conference. Then there is San Diego State and Nevada who both are Top 25 teams. Then there is now 3 teams that get close to the Top 25 but can never get in: Air Force, Fresno State, and Hawaii. Then there is the four bottom feeders… That would be, 4 teams of Top 25 quality and 3 teams that annually go to a bowl. Every conference has their bottom feeders and the MWC is no exception, the only difference is that now the bowl quality teams greatly outnumber the bottom feeders. That is a TON of depth and no one can call us a top heavy conference.
Another thing they bring is the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl and that vastly improves our bowl lineup.

Well,
Hawaii is a good, solid formidable program. Ask anyone who has played them. They were in the Sugar Bowl in 2008 after going 13-0 and beating Boise State, ending the season #10 in the nation. They ranked 29th when they played BSU a few weeks ago, and today rank about the same as Air Force at #34. Aloha stadium holds 50,000 and as for TV, the Islands have a base pop. o f 1,250,000 not counting a huge military population and visitors. And there is always a lot of mainland fan interest when they play. Hawaii is definately not a bottom feeder and always in the mix and might help with BCS AQ status.
I have gone there twice to play and it is a blast. I would rather add Hawaii and one other school that TCU might like for a partner, and go to 12, have a playoff, than take a chance and lose an unhappy Air Force or TCU. Besides, ask the potential MWC team recuits if they would like to go Hawaii every other year to play and have a luau on the the beach and you will find it would be a big plus signing them.
