BSU vs. TCU

Here are some fascinating stats put together by Chadd Cripe over at the Idaho Statesman. Is TCU really better than BSU?

I can't take credit for any of this, but I sure thought it was interesting.

While I was watching the “BCS Countdown” show Sunday night, Kirk Herbstreit and my dad made the same point at the same time — what has TCU done this year to make people think the Horned Frogs are better than last year, when they lost to the Broncos in the Fiesta Bowl?

And if you break down the numbers, it’s clear. While the Horned Frogs have been slightly more impressive this year against a schedule that ranks the same as last year, the Broncos have been far more impressive than last year against a schedule that ranks significantly higher than last year.

Here are the highlights:

— Boise State’s yardage margin (total offense minus total defense) is 312 yards this year — a 108 percent increase over last year. TCU’s yardage margin is 277 yards, a 28 percent increase.

— Boise State’s scoring margin is 34.4 points per game, a 37 percent increase. TCU’s scoring margin is 32.9, a 29 percent increase.

— Boise State has made larger gains than TCU in rushing offense, total offense, scoring offense, rush defense, total defense, scoring defense and sacks.

— Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore has improved his efficiency rating by 30.73 points — or 19 percent. That’s particularly impressive because Moore finished No. 2 in the nation last year. TCU quarterback Andy Dalton’s rating is up 9.8 percent.

— Boise State’s big wins in 2009 and 2010 are similar — the Broncos were more dominant against Oregon in 2009, but they beat Virginia Tech on the road. TCU’s big wins are similar, too — they crushed Utah this year and crushed Utah and BYU last year.

— Boise State’s most-criticized performance last year was a seven-point win at Tulsa. Its most-criticized performance this year was a 29-point win against Louisiana Tech, a game the Broncos led by 36 when the starters left. TCU’s most-criticized win last year was a three-point decision at Air Force. Its most criticized win this year was a 17-point decision at SMU.

— And, finally, TCU’s schedule ranks 62nd in the Sagarin Ratings. Its schedule was 60th last year. Boise State’s schedule currently ranks 72nd. Its schedule ranked 96th last year. In fact, the Broncos’ schedule this year is projected to finish ahead of TCU’s.

The point: If Boise State was the better team in January, when the Broncos won the Fiesta Bowl, and it’s the more improved team this year, what makes so many people think the Horned Frogs are the better team this year?

I'm not exactly sure

Both teams return a lot of their starters, but my big reason on why TCU>BSU is that last season TCU beat an inexperienced Utah team that was not in the top 15 by holding them to 28 points. This year, they beat a top 5 Utah team by holding them to just 7 points. That’s enough proof for me that TCU>BSU.

Except

That Utah’s team last year and Utah’s team this year are not the same either.

It's a moving target

I know it’s stupid to use last years results, but if BSU ended ahead of TCU, and BSU has shown the most improvement, then how can TCU be ranked ahead of Boise?

I think we’ll actually see a shift in the computers as BSU finishes the last four games against Idaho, Nevada, Fresno and Utah State. TCU only has SDSU and New Mexico left.

It’s sad that this system seems to set up good non-AQ teams so that they try to tear each other down. For BSU to make it, TCU has to lose out (or vice versa).

the game in the fiesta bowl was won by boise b/c dalton had two interceptions and a tcu wide receiver misjumped an easy td pass

i would speculate that dalton would play like he did vs utah (no mistakes) and they we beat boise by 7 to 10 points this year.

Why do canadians stick together? The same reason why Chris Horodecki turned his body and face around in his first WEC fight.

The game was won because

Boise held TCU to 1-12 on 3rd downs, held them to 1.8 yards per rush, and picked of Dalton 3 times. You are assuming that Utah has a defense like Boise, which I would argue they do not. To chalk up the Fiesta bowl to TCU “mistakes” and not Boise being the best defense on the field that night is unfair. But this is nothing new to hear. Boise beat Oklahoma because they were’t up for the game and needed trick plays, they beat Oregon because they had all summer to prepare, they beat TCU because they choked.

I don't take away anything from how Boise played.

They outcoached and out prepped TCU’s staff.

But TCU did choke. Their coaches abandoned what got them to Glendale. Running the FB til it hurts. Matthew Tucker had 1 carry for 9 yards. Dalton threw 44 pass attempts, by FAR his most of the season. Instead of simplifying the game and helping their QB out, the WRs, specifically Hicks had their worst games of their career, and Dalton did too.

But that was last year, this is this year. Dalton and Co. are not the same team.

And if Boise wants to blame anyone for where they are now

blame Va. Tech for losing to 4-5 James Madison at home.

neither is Boise… but it doesn’t matter. In the Fiesta Bowl Boise didn’t have their typical offensive game either, it goes both ways. Boise made the plays when it mattered.

Absolutely.

Again, I’m rooting for The Frogs, but if not them, then I hope the Broncos can be in the title game.

same here with TCU (which I think will happen) and I hope they roll

Chicken or the Egg?

Did TCU look bad because they played poorly or did Boise make them look bad? You can say Dalton choked; but maybe Boise knew Dalton couldn’t beat them in the air and so Boise said you aren’t going to run against us and TCU couldn’t. Also, Boise installed a new defense in 1 month- that is amazing.
You can point to Hicks dropping a touchdown and Boise can point to Kellen overthrowing a wide open Titus Young by 4 yards that would have been a touchdown on the first Boise possession. Also, Boise’s best WR Austin Pettis had broken his ankle the last regular season game and only came into the Fiesta bowl for a couple plays. I think a healthy Austin Pettis would have made that Boise offense look a lot better in that Fiesta Bowl.

then it was worse than i thought. dalton was picked off 3 times? you really think that would happen two years in a row?

Despite all that

TCU was a dropped Hicks TD from tying the game late in the 4th.

that was the mistimed jump right? i said it wrong. i said a misjumped.

it was a mistimed jump for an easy td catch.

Would Pettis be hobbling around on a not-quite-healed broken ankle two years in row?

i truly like boise state alot. i'm on their blog all the time.

i just think tcu is playing just about flawless this year. i don’t think that changes come bowl time. hopefully each team gets into a bcs bowl game and plays an sec, big 12 or pac ten team.

Excuses are for wimps

I didn’t hear Boise fans crying the Austin Peris had a brocken leg the starting left tackle was out to be replaced by a freshmen nor that our Middle line backer was out as well..

YOu lost because it’s a team game, plain and simple you were out coached and out played, Boise lead from start to finish end of story.
If they were to play again this year you would cry even louder.

Notre Dame!

5 point win over San at home I think this arguement is over…

Next year we’ll go head to head sounds like fun to me:D

Oh by the way Boise returns 16 of 21 starters next year.. just sick isn’t it..

Key retuners Kellen Moore , Doug Martin , Avery , the entier D-line enough said.

I thought that almost all the starters would be gone...

Your right, that is sick that BSU returns 16 of 21 starters next year.

This team was built

From the first BSC win over OSU, coach Pete just can coach kids up like no one else.
I can’t wait to see the ones he red shirted and gray shirted this year next.
Pete doesn’t need the 5 and 4 star kids to build a great team, but now that he’s getting more to choise from I can only imagine how good this team is going to be for years to come.
Watch how many of his kids will be playing on sunday over the next 3 years and think how much this will help him get those kids he wants that fit his mold… They all know if you play for Pete you will get better and no matter what because he doesn’t run up the score you will see the field.
Personally I think that is one of the reasons his teams do so well, young guys get a lot of playing time before they are called on to replace a graduating starter. I believe there has been 3 games this year where everyone seen the field. Thats priceless.

Harper not

Avery.. I get those 2 mixed up all the time.

Its so tough to decide

Boise has played TCU and the two have split the last two. The schedules are marginally different with TCU having an edge but not by much. Boise has also split between Oregon the past two years and have proven to be able to play with their high flying offense or a defensive struggle. It is tough to discern between the two.

I agree

As far as who is better, flip a coin…

I always have a problem with a team (any team) losing ground while continuing to dominate all their games. If BSU had even a single game that was questionable, then I’d agree with the rankings. As is, though, they haven’t slipped up…

by Camrong on Nov 10, 2010 3:53 PM PST up reply actions

I hate to correct people (and maybe I’m just reading it wrong), but Boise didn’t split with Oregon, they beat them both times.

Boise did beat Oregon the past two years.

there was no split

We beat them at their place with a freshmen qb starting his first road game ever, then stomped them at home.. You need to get your facts straight..

oH by the way you see that guy tearing it up in the NFL yeh they held him to 8 yards total with a safty…homers the lot of you!
