Mountain West Basketball Power Poll: 1/25/2010
The Mountain West is looking to be the premiere conference out west (yes even ahead of the Pac-10) with a possibility of three NCAA tourney teams which would be a league record.
The voting comes from the collective staff here at the site. Check after the jump to see how the votes turned out.

Um guys?
San Diego State beat New Mexico by double digits without their leading scorer playing (Billy White) and was the only team so far to give BYU a game. New Mexico has lost to the only upper tier teams it has played so far in conference play. (SDSU and UNLV)

Yup...
SDSU also lost to UNLV but they lost at Wyoming too. UNM won at Wyoming and have only 3 losses compared to 6 for SDSU on the year. Think we will get a definite answer this week when BYU visits The Pit.
Bring back Fum's Song!
UNM barely won at Wyoming. SDSU had a nearly 20 point lead at Wyoming before shitting the bed.

A win or "shitting the bed?"
Let’s make a poll and see what people would prefer. The American Dream: rollin’ around in feces. I think not.
Bottom line: we’ll see when BYU visits the Pit.

You mean the place where they lost to a lesser team than BYU in UNLV?

That wasn't some baseless arrogant statement.
I meant simply that we will see what happens in the game this week, which we will.
Just to entertain your thoughts though: the Lobos hold an all-time winning percentage of 81% at the Pit – 87% since 2004-2005. You are one of those people who does not think highly of the Lobos (as per your statements throughout this season), but those numbers mean that they have been damn good at home. Even in a season like 2002-2003 when the Lobos went 10-18, they beat #22 Utah at the Pit. However, it also means that they have lost at home – and not always to the best of teams. I remember the day that BYU broke the 41-game win streak in 1998 (I think). BYU was one of the worst teams in the league that year.

87% since 2004 maybe
But just 8-8 against BYU, UNLV, and SDSU at home against the top 3 in conference since 2004. Your argument would be much stronger if you weren’t just 50% at home against them. During that same span UNM is 3-13 on the road against those same 3 teams. Your home adavantage certainly helps your percentage but the numbers certainly favor the Big 3.
Over that time span you are undefeated against Utah at home. In fact, Utah hasn’t won at the Pit since ’01.

No way.
I want people to think as good as possible about New Mexico. We need to squeeze all we can out of that win. I just don’t think New Mexico has enough to beat BYU.

incorrect
UNLV almost beat BYU in Provo.

true, but...
given that UNLV won at BYU last year (the only team to do that in conference), I’m willing to give it some credit. UNLV always plays them tough.
