Mountain West Basketball Power Poll: 1/18/2010
The Mountain West is looking to be the premiere conference out west (yes even ahead of the Pac-10) with a possibility of three NCAA tourney teamss which would be a league record. The Utes look to have made the biggest jump by winning two this week with a surprise win over UNLV at the Thomas and Mack.
The voting comes from the collective staff here at the site this week has only a few voters since I sent out a request late this week. Check after the jump to see how the votes turned out.

Its all messed up
SDSU beat New Mexico but lost to UNLV. UNLV lost to Utah at home. New Mexico already has two conference losses.
I’d say SDSU is #2 at home but they still can’t eliminate enough mistakes to win on the road. Talentwise thought, I’d say SDSU is #2. We’ll have to see how all the teams bounce back from the first few games.

I do think that SDSU has talent but...
UNLV also has an abundance of talent at the guard position. We do have three big men that can improve over the next season (which we get all of them back next year). SDSU does have talent but we picked up Anthony Marshall, have Oscar Bellfield, Tre’von Willis, Derrick Jasper, Kendall Wallace and defensive specialist Steve Jones. All of these people have talent, and we get all of them except for Kendall next season. Our three big men have different specialities, one can shoot the ball, one plays great defense, and the other plays great post offense. Obviously BYU has the best talent in the conference, then I have UNLV #2, SDSU #3, Utah #4, New Mexico #5 and then the teams with stellar or less talent after them.

Sam - Wyoming lost to CSU and TCU...
With all the losses by the top teams it makes it really hard to rank each team. But that is what it so great about the power poll. Really lots of ways things could go.
UNLV
I had UNLV #2 last week, and the reason I stuck with them was in part because all the team’s are losing to everybody else so I figure it all stays the same sort of.
Guys, let's be fair
Last week you wouldn’t drop UNM because some said “you can’t drop them just because of 2 losses”, yet I see Utah skyrocketing for beating UNLV and CSU dropping because of losing to CSU. I’d take CSU over Utah anyday, just look at the record. CSU isn’t struggling to stay above .500.
UNLV is #2, SDSU #3, UNM #4, and CSU #5… the rest are interchangeable.
correction
CSU dropping because of losing to BYU.

CSU has been more consistent.
CSU beat some truly horrible teams, but lost to every half-way decent team they faced.
Utah, on the other hand, is 4-3 against the top 100 RPI, but also has 3 losses to teams below 150. They’re more jekyll and hyde, but you can’t compare records without taking strength of schedule into account. CSU has a SOS below 150, Utah’s is about 70. Utah played a much tougher schedule.
So, CSU wins games they’re supposed to win (except N. Colorado) and loses games they’re supposed to lose. Looking at the talent on both teams, Utah should beat CSU home and away, especially if they play up to their potential, but Utah’s inconsistency will be their downfall in some games this year. We’ll see if CSU is one of those games.

But Utah went 2-0
While CSU got worked by BYU, plus the Utah win over Vegas was on the road. For shooting up the polls Utah only moved up two spots over both teams that had a loss. Seems fair.
