MWC Hoops

Newmexico_mediumThis year's conference play has been outstanding... New Mexico, who was actually 1st in conference standings coming into conference play is now 1-2... losing to San Diego State, UNLV and just recently beating Utah last night.

Byu-logo_mediumBYU is playing great basketball with their only loss on the entire season coming against Utah State and are ranked at 17/18. BYU has amazing talent at the guard position and down low... I see them possibly making it even past the Sweet 16.

Unlv_20runnin_5c_27_20rebels_20logo_medium UNLV could be undefeated in conference play this year if they would have finished the last 4 minutes of he game against BYU. They lost to BYU at BYU and then beat UNM in New Mexico and then beat SDSU at home. If they beat Utah, then they have the "easy stretch" against Colorado St., Air Force, TCU, and Wyoming before they have New Mexico and BYU back at home... they have alot of potential, if they use it over the next few games, they could be ranked around 20.

Sdsu-logo-aaf_medium SDSU has been inconsistent, but when they don't turn the ball over and make their free throws, they could be considered one of the best teams in the conference. If they get more consistent then they could get into the tournament and make some noise.

Colorado-state-logo_medium Colorado St. actually isn't playing very bad at all and are undefeated in conference play... Their only issue is that in the non-conference season they went 9-5 and that really hurt them. The only way I really see them getting in is if they go at least 14-2 in conference play or win the MWC Tourney... and that is going to be really hard to do against teams like New Mexico, BYU, UNLV and SDSU, especially since they haven't gone up against any of them yet...

Utah_logo_medium Utah is also a team that is very inconsistent and that is their issue. They have the talent there, they just don't stay consistent. One day they'll look a team that can challenge anyone in the MWC and another day they'll look like Air Force could beat them by 10...

Mwc_logo_medium Wyoming, Air Force and TCU don't really have the talent there right now but their schedules are improving and their talent will improve with time...

This year's conference hoops are so much fun to watch and see what happens...

Good to see CSU in all these talks

Its very early and I expect a drop off but the preseason polls had them 7-8 in the conference and they are looking like a 5 or so right now. I agree they will have to make big waves in the MWC tournament to get into the NCAA as I am guessing they go around .500 in conference.

Let’s all just hope its not like the CSU football team getting in these early talks then losing 9 straight.

Regarding the poll

The MWC deserves 4 to be in, but like with the past we’ll be lucky to get 3. The part that hurts the MWC is the top 4 could each win their home games against each other and really muddle up the picture. I can’t say with total confidence that BYU will beat the other 3 up their on their courts. It’s really a very tough year for MWC basketball.

the mwc has three teams in today's espn basketball poll.

there was not one pac-ten team in the top 40 if you go by others receiving votes. they are also 7 teams in non bcs conferences in the top 25 and 10 in the top 30. gonzaga, butler, northern iowa and cornell are the other four. plus arizona put itself on ncaa probation. things are not looking up for the pac ten. can’t wait til feb 22 the day we will know all that will happen to usc football. mininum scholarships taken away. i hope they get more than that.
