Debut of the Mountain West Hoops Power Poll
The Return of the power poll is here with the hoops version. The Mountain West is looking to be the premiere conference out west (yes even ahead of the Pac-10) with a possibility of four NCAA tourney teams which would be a league record.
The voting comes from the collective staff here at the site this week has only a few voters since I sent out a request late this week. Here we go the first edition of the polls, just a note the polls are put together quickly next weeks will look more smooth. After the jump look to see how each member voted.

FYI Sam
BYU beat UNLV with Jimmer playing at 50% with mono.
bhs, no comment.
I’m going to give you both the benefit of the doubt and guess that these were submitted early last week.
My defense
NMU on the season still seems the more impressive team to me. They have the highest RPI and SOS in the conference. I didn’t do this based on the last two games.
BYU could sneak up to second but to me, 2,3,4 were all interchangeable to me so go BYU, UNLV, SDSU if you want.
Its just hard to rank teams when they all have been playing easy schedules for the most part besides NMU. BYU’s SOS is 3rd last in the conference and 128 in the nation so a 16-1 record isn’t that impressive to me. I am surprised by the NMU harshness in everyone’s poll.

UNM's wins against good teams
is looking more and more like luck. They’re young and teams wouldn’t expect them to pull off a win, I think they just snuck up on a team that was looking to the next game.
Again, they are young and it’s starting to manifest itself mid-season. Conference play is much more intense than a non-conf game. There’s more intensity involved because it has much more weight at the end of the season.

50/50
While the last half of your comment makes sense, the first has no basis.
UNM, undefeated, did not “sneak up” on Texas A&M or any other team it played nor did it, with one loss at Oral Roberts and a top-20 ranking, “sneak up” on Dayton and Texas Tech.
I do not agree that they should be #1 in the Power Poll (that is between BYU and UNLV), but they have been earning their wins against good teams. Are they performing above their maturity, maybe they were (and were humbled at the start of conference play), but that’s not news since Steve Alford has been saying so all year long. The season is young, teams are going to be exposed and teams are going to lose. In any case, I think it is ignorant to call the Lobos lucky.

Sorry, just thought of one more thing...
your “sneaking up” argument might be more accurate if it were assigned to SDSU and UNLV when they played UNM since UNM came off of big wins and a very impressive non-conference resume.
I don’t mean to be brutal, I just think it was unfair and unfounded. I’m a huge Lobo fan too!

I can't agree with you there
In MWC hoops there are 3 teams you always give your a-game to: BYU, UNLV, and SDSU. For UNM to have lost to 2 of those 3 to start out conference play especially after big wins would indicate more towards them (UNM) sneaking up on others than others sneaking up on them. Not to mention that UNLV was their conference home opener. Don’t get me wrong, UNM is young and good but their level of basketball maturity needs some growth. They’ll get it, it just might be too late for this year. I still see them dancing as the MWC’s 4th team.

We'll have to agree to disagree...I guess
You talk as if UNM is not good at basketball and never has been – you also neglect to mention Utah. As you pointed out, UNM IS young, but as we all know, that has been mentioned all season. With that in mind, you are telling me that at #15 in the country and with a bunch of conference hype, the Lobos are not going to overlook teams? Absurd. I’m not saying that they do not have lessons to learn and do not have room for growth. Just give them the credit for winning their games.

Umm... really?
“With that in mind, you are telling me that at #15 in the country and with a bunch of conference hype, the Lobos are not going to overlook teams? Absurd.”
Sorry but no team ranked #15 should ever consider themselves a powerhouse that can overlook 2 of the top programs in the conference over the last decade. Especially when both teams have great records. Now if UNM had just lost to TCU or AFA then you can make the argument that they were overlooking them. But what you are trying to tell me is that now because Texas is ranked #1 and Kansas is ranked #3 that Texas is going to overlook them when they play? That’s about how ridiculous your argument sounds.
UNM played great games this year (I’m pretty sure I’ve been giving them credit all along) and won great games this year BUT they benefited from non-conference play and early season play. Perfect example, the Denver Bronco’s started the season 6-0 but almost right on cue the wheels came off at mid-season. They finished the year 8-8. The funny thing is when they were 6-0 analysts were already predicting them to go all the way. I think you see where this is going. I’m not trying to say that UNM will struggle to win games from here though. They could end up being flashes in a pan but I’m pretty sure neither you or I have a crystal ball to predict that.
BTW, if UNM were still as good as you think then why do the voters agree with me and think they aren’t as good as they’ve looked? They are young, which sets them up very well for next year.

Bottom line(s)
You said they were “lucky.” That’s unfair. Opportunistic? I’ll buy that, but lucky? That’s inaccurate.
You said they are “young.” That makes it possible for them to buy into hype and think they can beat anyone in the MWC. The Lobos have not been legitimately ranked since Dave Bliss.
Kansas, Texas, Denver? That’s like comparing apples to…porn stars.

Which is why I said those things
Your comments on the Lobos are based on your dedication to them so you’re unwilling to see them through anyone else’s perspective… more in touch with reality. I’m just surprised I’m not hearing you say UNM is the favorite to win the MWC next year in football.

And yet...
I am the one who is willing to show where I agree and disagree whereas you decide to throw out entirely unfounded comments.
Yes, I am a Lobo fan, but I can see it accurately; I even called bhsmarine out for tooting the Lobos’ horn. And no, I do not think they will win the MWC in basketball. I honestly think they will be three or four – and maybe win or reach the final of the tournament.
And I will entertain the football comment: as long as Locksley is at UNM, the Lobos are finished! Worse hire than Sylvester Croom.

While I appreciate the respect given to UNM...
I think you have to consider the current run of form for teams in your rankings and that it is a conference power poll. It’s hard to argue with BYU’s start and UNLV’s win at the Pit.
On another note, I think the arguments you have made are the reason why UNM is a lock right now in the tournament and probably will be with a top-four finish, while the other teams need to continue to turn heads.

I guess it comes down to what you think the poll is...
is it a who is the best team in conference poll? Who has played the best in/out of conference?
This confused me to when I first did the football poll early season. Its hard to judge teams in conference when they haven’t played each other or many similar opponents. So this early its what you judge on, and I judged NMU on their big wins versus BYU’s average schedule wins. In a few weeks we will actually see how the conference is shaping up.
Bring back Fum's Song!
On a totally unrelated note...
do you write NMU instead of UNM to get under my skin….because it gets under my skin.
Stawp g’tin tuchee-feelie, zzzEmoGoestzzz. I dun’t lyke noin ur Emoshuns!
Nope
Didn’t know there was a difference, I will try and remember UNM if that is the preferred way. I get confused when people say it one way but abbreviate it another. Like University of Colorado and CU. No one says Colorado University.
Is it always University of New Mexico?
Bring back Fum's Song!
Yep
It is the University of New Mexico and UNM.
I am totally with you concerning the inconsistencies though. University of Kansas and KU has always irritated me.
