This post was promoted from fan post to the front page.

Around the many blogs and message boards, (SB Nation is far better than most by this count) many MWC fans appear to be defending themselves from their familiar place as a disrespected conference with a chip on our shoulders.  I am not certain the old concept of disrespect is still appropriate for the MWC.

The MWC has 3 teams in the top 25 in both the coaches and AP poll in week 2.  We did not have to earn are way their in 2009, this is where we started.

Respect.

I have observed that it is not the fans of high profile teams we defeat that answer our defenses of our teams.  Oklahoma and Alabama fans have been very respectful of BYU and Utah and what they have accomplished.

Respect.

The charges against the MWC come from those who do not play us and view our success as a threat to their place at the table.  Big East and ACC fans tend to lead the charge.  You don't fear an adversary you do not...

Respect.

Star-divide

I believe in this analogy:

2009 Sugar Bowl : MWC :: 1926 Rose Bowl : SEC

For this analogy to continue the MWC will need to continue to improve over the next 10 years as they have their first 10 years.  The question for 2009 was could the MWC live up to the talk they talked this off season.

Out of the gates things look excellent.  If TCU, Utah and BYU win all thier OOC games (a feat that looks much less imposing after week 1) it will be hard for Boise State to keep up, even if one of those three takes a loss along the way.  Playing more than one good team has its benefits.  A national championship game berth is not out of the question if one of these teams goes undefeated.

Respect.

To become great the MWC will need to improve in the middle.  CSU and Air Force have put a serious case that they are ready to fill that role.  They are both receiving a point of two in one of the polls.  If these teams win their OOC games, plus an upset of one of the top 3 teams, the MWC could end the season with 4 top 25 teams.

The Big East and ACC will be fortunate to get a second team into the top 14 for BCS eligibility, especially if TCU defeats Clemson and BYU puts down FSU (Oklahoma beating Miami (FL) helps too.)   Notre Dame could easily lose 3 and be knocked out of the top 14.

The PAC 10's hopes of a second team are riding on California.  The Big 10's hopes are riding on Ohio State (Or Penn State.)  If these teams falter we could be looking at a situation where the BCS is forced to take 2 MWC teams, or a MWC team and Boise State,

Respect.

While some might say it would be fitting to act like we have been here before, I say lets enjoy the moment and remember the road it took to get here.  Lets enjoy our new found national media favor and treat the ACC and Big East fans with a little ...

Respect.

Nice Work

While it would be awesome for two MWC teams to go to the BCS, I do not see that as likely. For one if Boise goes undefeated they will be ahead of one of the MWC teams with a single loss. Yes, their is only one auto bid and a second just needs to be in the top14 to be considered, but if the auto bid goes to the MWC and then comes down to undefeated Boise or a one lost MWC team. Then the bowl in my opinion would take Boise.

You are right that it is possible that if things break right that the BCS would be forced to at least take two non-BCS teams to the BCS, but it would take a lot. For that to happen the SEC and Big XII need to get three teams in the top 14, the Pac-10 champ, and Big 10 champ. That would be eight spots then throw in Boise and two MWC teams which equals 11 spots. Then the other three spots would need to be occupied by either another non-BCS, ACC champ, Big East champ (I know that is laughable but Cincy looked good), or another Big XII or SEC.

That would leave the only eligible teams to be the non-BCS schools and they would be forced to do so. That scenario is very specific but last year it was close to happening with 6 Big XII or SEC teams in the top 14, along with 3 non-BCS schools. The choice was ultimately down between Ohio State, Boise, TCU, and Georgia Tech. All four were in the top 14 and were eligible. And Georgia Tech was 14th, so the possibility is out there however things need to break correctly.

Thank you

I have outlined what it would take for a MWC team to get a shot at the NCG or for two teams to bust the BCS in my CBS sports blog, BCS Revolution.

If BYU, TCU or Utah go undefeated they will have a solid case for a championship game bid and solid support from the computers. If they got left out then it would be like Auburn in 2004. Boise State will not have that luxury.

Even with a loss they should climb be ahead of Boise State for a guarnateed bid, which is good because I don’tthink anyone goes undefeated in conference play this year. Air Force or CSU might even upset one of the top 3. Either of these teams would be flirting with the top 25 if they can manage this feat, giving the MWC a new record 4 teams in the final BCS top 25.

The scenario for getting 2 teams from outside the automatic qualifying conference to in a BCS bowl is fairly straightforward. Last year was one Ohio State loss to anyone but Michigan State away from seeing this happen.

Basically California (or USC) and Ohio State (or Penn State) need to fall out of the top 14 while Notre Dame and the ACC’s #2 need to stay out.

Good article

I would say that Respect also takes time. As you point out the middle schools need to be better. I agree. But the lower teams need to improve as well. Yes, every conference has their bottom dwellers, but those conferences already have the respect, so the bottom teams are given a pass of some sort. The MWC and WAC do not get this.

Wyoming, San Diego St., New Mexico need a few wins out of conference. When that starts to happen I think the MWC will get even more respect. In fact this summer one of the talking heads on ESPN College Football Live said something I thought was interesting, when talking about the MWC getting an auto BCS berth. He said, BYU, Utah, TCU ARE BCS schools…..and should be in a BCS auto conference. UNLV, San Diego St, New Mexico (those are the ones he said) are NOT BCS schools, and that’s the real issue, he claimed.

I know the conference has been down this road before….BUT, by 2013, I think we will see the MWC do a little realignment of schools, and take in Fresno St, and Boise St. (and one other school) to bring the conference to 12 teams, have a championship game, so the winner has an auto BCS berth, or playoff berth.

(I’m an Okla. U grad as well as a CSU grad)

BCS automatic qualification in 2012

The procedures are in place to reevaluate the conferences based on 2008-2011 to see if any other conferences warrent an automatic qualification for 20112 and 2013. Based on precedent the 2011 conference membership of 2011 will be used for all 4 years.

Boise State is the only team that would help the MWC in this evaluation.

I expect an invite of Boise State this summer so they can join in 2011,and a wait and see approach for some other teams.

If the MWC continues to perform the question should become whether the evaluation should be ran over 2007-2010 for 2011, even if the BCS is not contractually obligated to do so.

Same Here

I wrote about this topic, and feel Boise will get the invite this summer and join for the 2011 year. All of their rankings carry over. This is a better move then Utah moving to the Pac-10 or something along those lines, because they would instantly be at the top and not battling for five or so years with USC and others.

Yup

The new commish Larry Scott was on KTAR and phoenix last week or so and said 18 months and was looking at Utah and Colorado.

ok, this is interesting

I heard a rumor on the radio, that was unsubstantiated, but was that Boise State was going to apply for the Big 12. But…well….there is 12 teams there already.

Oh, thanks for the well, thought out, and researched responses up above. It’s nice to know there are other fans, that are following the realignment dance.

Oh by the way

that was a great thread you had there in your blog. VERY informative. The key was your follow-ups were just as in-depth as your original post.

i rather build the mtn west then join the pac-ten

other than usc who gets more publicity than utah or byu out west. coach whittingham has been on jim rome’s show at least twice. rome is very complimentery to the mwc. utah has a 15 game winning streak. an eight game bowl win streak. which includes a win over usc in vegas bowl 10-7(pete carrol was coach and carson palmer was qb). if byu gets by fsu like i think they will i will want byu to win the rest of there games to at least get a regular bcs. game. that will prove that at least 2 differnet teams can get to a bcs game. (maybe tcu can pull it off too) no need to join pac-ten. you probably did not know that the rose bowl has to take an at large team if they qualify starting next year if the pac ten champion or big ten champion qualifies for the nc game and no other team in that conference or other bcs conferences don’t qualify. it’s slowly changing to are favor. let the big least, and the acc get their bids with 3 loss teams just about every year. no way colorado joining anything. they just got smoked by toledo. first a mtn west team and then a mac team. goodbye dan hawkins and his son. their season is kaput. the big 12 should let them goto the sunbelt. anybody know john swoffords e-mail address. i want to congratulate him on the acc’s fine first week of football and tell him virginia stands no chance against tcu. i agree let boise state become the tenth team in the mwc. ramble on!

Agreed

I would rather build the MWC because the Big Three are going to be on the top and just need to win the league to get to a BCS. A move to the Pac-10 could be challenging for Utah or BYU. Or if TCU were to get picked up by the Big XII if the dominos fall that far.

The MWC close, so they should just invite Boise this summer and get in the BCS. Then maybe two more for a title game, however if the money is big enough and there is an invite schools would move to those other leagues.

Agreed as well

The Mountain West has now had enough history, and had enough success, with enough schools to start having respect. In fact, on ESPN’s College Game day this morning (sept. 12) there was a big give and take on BYU, or Boise St (sure not a MWC team yet), not just busting the BCS…but playing for the National Championship game this year.

As for the Big 12, if they lost Colorado (to the Pac 10) or Iowa St/Missouri (to the Big 10) I know their first choice would be Arkansas. However, there may be some contractual restrictions on Arkansas leaving the SEC. It will be interesting to see how the musical chairs will end once it gets going.

Big XII

BYU would be in the Big XII if not for Baylor grad Ann Richards who was the Gov of Texas at the time, and she forced Baylor in the Big XII. Arkansas may be the first choice, I would think TCU but the Texas schools may object so that they do not have to compete for recruits.

Since we have gone to talking expansion...

One of the biggest reasons the MWC should get Boise State now is because if they don’t and the MWC loses two of BYU, Utah or TCU to a bigger conference they will look far less enticing.

The WAC might be in a stronger position at that point, taking their pickings from the remnant of the MWC. C-USA might even get in on the action, especially if they lose a few to the Big East.

byu's big win and tcu easily handing virginia....

another lost. john swofford(acc commisioner) get use to this because it’s going to happen in two more weeks vs clemson. byu should move to #7 when usc puts the beatdown on osu. byu should crush fsu b/c last time i looked they were losing to jacksonville state. things are shaping up well for the mwc. all three mwc teams covered the spread and hopefully utah and airforce can continue thir winning ways. ramble on!

East coast bias will always be roadblock

Let’s face it. The East Coast dominates the media and the BCS. Most of those morons haven’t even seen a team from west of the mississippi. It doesn’t matter how good any team from the MWC, WAC or PAC-10 is, they are fighting an uphill battle. That’s what made Utah’s pummeling of Alabama so delightful – the East Coast powers thought they were sending a lamb to slaughter and protecting the ACC and Big East by keeping them away from any legitimate team. All you hear from the SEC about that is that Alabama wasn’t into the game (think maybe the Utes had something to do with that?) and losing Smith was so devastating. Another case of them never seeing teams from the west – those of us that had and had seen Alabama weren’t that surprised.

The thing that will hurt most this year is BYU looking like the Little Sisters of the Poor against FSU. What would be best for the MWC is for both TCU and Utah to trash BYU. I wouldn’t count AFA out against them either. This should be a good year for TCU, Boise and Houston to go undefeated because the parity all across college football has never been more even and the likelihood of undefeated teams in the SEC, Big 12, and Big 10 isn’t great. I look for a lot of 2 loss teams with BCS possibilties. There aren’t any super teams out there this year, including the 3 that are on top right now.
