It's About Time

Now, I am a die-hard Utah fan and would never give any credibility to BYU; but this was huge.  The conference really needed this to prove once again that the Mountain West deserves to be in the discussion for a BCS Bowl Bid, and the National Title.  BYU looked great tonight, barring 4 turnovers and some lack of execution.  There were a few things I noticed that do worry me for the game coming up in November versus Utah.  First the BYU defense: I didn’t even know they had a defense!  Let alone a defense that could shut down an offense that put up 51 points a game last year.  Second would be this new young guy Bryan Karyia, he carried the load for the rushing side of that offense tonight and was a huge reason as to why they won.  Third, the offense looked like the high potent offense that they had been preaching about all last season.  They actually converted on third downs, drove the ball the length of the field for that go ahead score, and were able to do what they do best.

But, then again being a huge Utah fan, and becoming a possible student there here in a year.  The Utes will be just fine come game time against the Cougs’.  Utah’s defense will improve immensely, they looked a little scrappy here in the first game but I didn’t expect them to come out and be perfect on Thursday.  Terrance Cain looked very impressive versus Utah State.  Now granted, they did play against Utah State, but Utah State had the man behind that brilliant defense from last year.  Cain will continue to get better and that offense will get even harder to stop.  Once the defense starts to “gel” and get a little more into “mid-season form” they will be one of the best if not the best defense in the entire nation.

Also, I’d like to point out that Utah has something that Oklahoma doesn’t have….Matt Asiata.  Now not to take anything away from the two fantastic 1,000 yard rushers they have, but Oklahoma doesn’t run the ball like Utah does and will.  Oklahoma likes to air it out with their Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford, well then again when he’s not injured!  BYU’s defense will not be able to contend and stop the power running of Asiata, nor will they be able to keep up with stopping David Reed or Jereme Brooks.  They were not able to do it last year, and you can’t coach speed!  Not to take anything away from Oklahoma, they are still Oklahoma.  Not to make excuses for them but they did not have their starting center, star tight end, or the MVP of that team Sam Bradford.

Great job BYU.  Stepping up and performing well against a very tough team in Oklahoma.  Now it will look even better on Utah’s resume when we beat you!  Also hopefully Oklahoma beats Texas!  This is great for us!  Have fun enjoying the spotlight, but don’t get too excited.  You’ve still got to play Florida State, TCU, and the best team in the Mountain West…UTAH!!!

Same here

A big Utah fan and as I do not really care for BYU when they play Utah. This win was HUGE for them and the league, I just hope that OU does not turn into what Pitt was in 84 when Pitt was 3rd in the preseason and then fell off the earth.

in bradford they trust

if sam bradford doesn’t come back anytime soon, they will fall and drop 3 maybe 4 games.

Don't get too carried away

I’m an OU grad (and current president of the OU Club of Colorado) as well as a CSU grad.

The loss of Bradford and a Heisman trophy winner is huge of course (latest word is his injury could be a type 3 injury which would have him out for the year) but the back up was a parade all-american in HS, a top 5 QB prospect, and actually higher rated recruit coming out of HS then Bradford was. So the loss of Bradford isn’t the end of the world. The loss of Bradford was not why OU lost to BYU. (there are plenty of reasons…but Bradford’s loss wasn’t one of them)

The Big 12 has several great schools and programs. With Bradford, there was no guarantee that OU could win all their games. Texas, Okla. State, and Kansas at Lawrence are all tough games. Non-conference, OU plays Tulsa (one of the highest scoring teams in the nation) and travel to Miami, Fla.

So yeah…OU could drop 3 or 4, or even 6….. But any team could say the same thing. For Florida to ASSUME it will when every game in the SEC or Texas to win every game is just wrong, but to assume they or OU will lose all their tough games is also silly. The teams have to go and play the games.

sure he could be

if the Sooners lost EVERY game going forward that they COULD lose…they could end up 4-8. (there’s no way they lose to Texas A&M, Tech, K-State, or Idaho St.)

The Sooners could also still run the table. and end up 11-1. (they have 2 1,000 rushers, and one of the top defenses on paper in the country)

And that’s the point….there is parity in college football. No team, I don’t care who you list, is unbeatable. Not Florida, Not Texas,…no body. That’s the beauty…that’s THE fun…No one knows who’s going to be in the National Championship game right now…no one.

It’s a little early to be dancing on the grave of the OU Sooners.

I know

I was just pointing out that Andre Ware may accidentally be called a genius if OU falls to 8-4

i'm a ute fan too but you forgot a few things......

byu did not have their starting rb unga playing and they had to redo their offensive line. you should want all mtn west teams to beat all out of conference opponents. i hope colorado state beats colorado in a few hours. i like utah to go 11-2 while i have tcu and byu going 12-1. i still think tcu or byu would get the bcs bid over a probably undefeated boise state team b/c the wac just got pounded by everybody yesterday. nevada laid a goose egg to nd and san jose scored one fg to usc’s 56. those are supposed to be their better teams. tcu did finish #7 in the country with two losses so i believe my scenario would come true. i would add boise state to the mwc asap. the acc will probably have a 3 loss team which would put them under 16th in the final bcs standings and the same could be said of the big east( less likely b/c they have less teams in conference). john swofford the commissioner of the acc must be eating crow by now. va. tech got beat by what i think will be a three loss sec team and two of his schools lost too fcs schools, richmond over duke and virginia losing to william and mary. another medicore year for the acc. swofford was the one who said utah should just be happy playing in the sugar bowl. everything changes in 2013. we will have a plus one or 4 team playoff. last year that would have meant florida vs utah for the nc on a nuetral field with the plus one!
