If College Football Had a Playoff: #16 Troy @ #1 Alabama

So, starting each week day from now till the title game a 'What if Playoff' will occur here with readers voting on who should win the matchup.

Today's would be Sun Belt champion Troy @ Alabama.  An upset is unlikely, but the way Troy plays against big time competition who knows how close this game would be.  Yes, a playoff would feature home teams by the upper seed to give them an advantage for a better season.  The bracket and stats on each team are listed below.

Just make sure to vote and the winner moves onto the next round.  Voting is open for 24 hours, and look for these to be posted each day at 12 eastern time.

Love the idea...

…but advancement by popular vote? This should end well.

Well...

I could make my own judgment calls if some how Troy gets a ton of votes and some how wins.

These types of diversions are fun...

…and I hope my comment here doesn’t take all of the fun out of this, but…

The only playoff scenario I can fully get behind is open ONLY to conference champions and has to be open to ALL conference champions. I really don’t like the thought of someone being national champion that didn’t win their conference (and that’s why I don’t like Alabama claiming the national title they claim for 1941.)

You have 11 conference currently (I’d favor realignment to 12) and then make a slightly lopsided bracket from that where teams ranked 1-4 get a first round bye and 5-12 play immediately. That way, literally every team gets a shot at the title, but no runner’s up do. The polls would still be relevant for seeding purposes. Sure there’d be the occasional bit of controversy in the seedings, but most of the time it’s going to be pretty obvious.

That’d eliminate LSU, Iowa, Florida, Penn State and Virginia Tech from the bracket. And really, Florida’s the only team that would really be missed out of that group, so I’d keep it champions only.

Differing opinion is great

I would not mind a 12 team playoff if it were all conference champs, but the thing to consider is that most years the SEC and sometimes the Big XII second team is as good as the top half of a bracket. I get your point winning your conference should mean something.

Top 16 teams, not conference champions.

If it’s a good quality conference champion, then they would/should be in the top 16. If they win their conference championship, but don’t make it into the top 16, then that conference plain and simple doesn’t deserve a chance at a championship of any sort.

Make it the top 16 ranked teams, and I’m in favor of it.

That system...

…still keeps dozens of teams out based merely on opinion though and that seems like one of the biggest complaints people have about the BCS is that it’s still only for the Big Six conferences.

by Nico2.0 on Dec 15, 2009 8:27 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

well

Each league is gets a team in, and yes just like the NCAA hoops tourney the power leagues get most of the at-large spots. Had this been done last year the MWC would have had Utah as the auto and TCU as an at large, and BYU was just on the outside of getting in right behind LSU.

Really dozens of teams out?? I dont see a team ranked 20 or below having a legit shot at winning in a 16 team playoff.

by Jeremy Mauss on Dec 15, 2009 8:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I was responding specifically to cal n's assertion...

…that

If it’s a good quality conference champion, then they would/should be in the top 16.

There’s obviously assumptions about the quality of the Sun Belt, MAC, CUSA, etc. that could likely keep them out of the mix of a 16 team tournament, even as champions (since that person said there shouldn’t be autoqualifiers for conference champions.) The “dozens” I was referring to are the members of those conferences that would still largely be locked out no matter what they did. I would imagine a 10-2 Troy that won the Sun Belt, but lost to say, Florida and Ohio State would still be locked out even though putting together a solid season. I was just saying having non-autoqualifiers for all conferences ultimately keeps the access in the hands of the big boys and only slightly improves the lots of non-Big Six teams.

I think the biggest complaint is that undefeated teams have no shot at a championship

No undefeated teams will be out of the top 16. Done and Done.

I think it's a matter of equal opportunity.

If they are given equal opportunity, then I could really care less what those other conferences say.

With the BCS, there isn’t really equal opportunity, outside the BCS championship game. You have automatic qualifiers and non automatic qualifiers etc. That isn’t equal opportunity.

If a SEC team doesn’t make the top16, then the SEC doesn’t get a team in the playoffs. That is equal opportunity.

But I am of the opinion that what conference a team is from shouldn’t matter at all, outside the obvious fact that most of their opponents will come from that conference, which has SoS implications.
