Whittingham and the Washington Job

Recently Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham was on a Seattle station and they discussed the open position at the University of Washington. The standard questions and answers were given: "I love Utah, I am focused on the bowl, bla bla." He said he would listen, but who would not listen.

As the list of candidates grow and the fact that Gary Andersen left Utah to become the head coach at Utah State points in the direction of Kyle Whittingham staying at Utah. Andersen would have been the logical choice to replace Whittingham had he left. The list of candidates is impressive. The University of Washington football blog in Seattle Times reported that Mike Leach was in town on December second for an interview for the open spot.

Another coach that was in the mix was Pat Hill of Fresno State as of yesterday, but today is out.

Also, Mike Leach who went to Seattle took his name out of the running today. That could be because Auburn contacted Leach to see what his interest was in that job.

The only official candidate and most likely the front runner is USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, or a dark horse candidate could be Brent Venables, who is the associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners.

It looks that Kyle Whittingham is not in the running for the Washington job, because if he was why would Gary Andersen jump to take over the Utah State job had Whittingham left.

I will never say never until the Washington job is filled.
