Rocky Long to UNLV and other coaching updates

UNLV is not going bowling this year, but according to Ed Graney from the Las-Vegas Review Journal he feels that former New Mexico head coach Rocky Long should be contacted to coach the defense for UNLV.

Long resigned as New Mexico's coach after 11 seasons, saying he still wants to roam the sidelines as an assistant or coordinator.

This could be interesting because when Long was very successful at UCLA and Oregon State as the defensive coordinator which lead him to the New Mexico job and was their most successful coach. At New Mexico Long lead the defense to finished 13th nationally in total defense in 2007 and 18th in 2001. It routinely sat among the league leaders in rush defense and sacks under Long. This is all rumor from Ed Graney but could but th is be a good idea if Long wants to get back into coaching.

On the Wyoming coaching front Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman wants to find and hire a coach within three weeks, however he said he wants to do a full search and not limit themselves to a certain coaching level.

Reportedly the first one up will be Nebraska wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore, a former UW player and assistant with obvious ties to the program and the region, who is scheduled for a visit today.

This is the only candidate publicly named, not sure if a wide receivers coach making a jump to head coach is a good idea, but the fact that he went to Wyoming helps a lot.

This last one is just a rumor from the Las Vegas Review Journal, which is former NFL head coach and current professor at San Diego State Dennis Greene is being considered for the SDSU job. This would be interesting, but my feeling is that this is a rumor and nothing will come of that.
