Want to become the face of a college program? Get your jersey number retired before you're finished playing there. That's what happened for Cunningham, who had his No. 12 retired at halftime of the 1984 regular-season finale. Cunningham led UNLV to a record 11 victories and its first bowl game that season, finishing as the school's leading passer and punter. He was an All-American twice for his punting skills and finished with 8,020 career passing yards. The versatile Cunningham took his skills to the NFL and reached four pro bowls. He left UNLV just 20 credits shy of his degree but returned to complete it at age 41. -- Adam Rittenberg
